Video Overview Review by STEVEN J GOTTLIEB

The B-52s "Funplex" - Hot Video, Modern Rock Video
Leave it to The B-52s to have way more fun than I ever have at a mall. Then again, they seem to be
on way more hallucinogens than I would ever dare take before heading to Paramus or Sherman
Oaks. The video is very future-leaning - Fred Schneider on a Segway seems strangely natural -
especially for a usually retro band that is in its third decade of existence.

Duffy "Mercy" - Hot Video, Modern Rock Video, Club Video
One exposure to Duffy and you realize why the music industry it lining up to place bets on the UK
export. She's basically Amy Winehouse for 2008, but blonder, brassier, a wee bit blander and, most
importantly, probably not on the crack. Former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler plays the Mark
Ronson role as producer, orchestrating an r&b sound that falls partway between retro and mod-
ern. Director Adria Petty handles the visuals with the same strategy that Butler did with the audio:
Duffy and her band perform to a crowd of hipsters at a dark underground club that's both sexy
modern and a throwback to the psychedlic multimedia happenings thrown by Andy Warhol.

Gnarls Barkley "Run" - Modern Rock Video
What starts out as a basic spoof of a "crazy fresh" '80s hip-hop dance show - with Justin
Timberlake as the poor white man's Don Cornelius - suddenly gets very hypnotic in this brand
new Gnarls Barkley clip. Zebra stripes and b&w checkerboard patterns collide with one another
as Danger Mouse mans the turntables and Cee-Lo lays out a decidedly Crazy croon.

Vampire Weekend "A Punk" - Modern Rock Video
While it's too early to proclaim Vampire Weekend my favorite indie rock band with an Ivy League
pedigree - Don't worry Jon Spencer, your Blues Explosion is still #1 in my heart - this quartet of
Columbia University alums is looking like a good bet to break big in 2008. The buzz has clearly
reached overseas because the mighty Hammer & Tongs creative team doesn't take on a low budget
commission for any band. This purposefully choppy performance piece plays up the manic preco-
ciousness that propels each beat of pretty glorious exampled of what the Vampwees call "Upper
West Side Soweto."

Usher "Love In This Club" - Urban Video
The definition of a "Big Big Big Big Big" video may have changed a bit over the years, but the mes-
sage never got to Usher. The megastar is back with a fittingly massive big-budget video that's
merely the prelude to another big clip that's already been shot. Guest stars galore, an exclusive
location in the heart of Hollywood, and a top-notch crew. All on a week's notice, of course. The
Brothers Strause may seem like an unlikely choice to get the keys to this luxury vehicle, but the Duffy
Bros have cut their chops over the years through effects work for both music videos and such fea-
ture films as 300, X-Men 3 and Fantastic Four 2, not to mention a directing reel of visually complex
hard rock videos and their own feature,Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Dizzee
Dizzee Rascal "Where Da G's" - Club Video Rascal
English rapper Dizzee Rascal may be backed by the almighty Pound and he's certainly savvy enough
to know that the bling bling lifestyle is largely a myth, but even he probably wasn't quite expecting
the impoverished state of the Houston neighborhood where they shot this video for "Where The
G's At." On the micro, it's a pretty simple, but devastatingly powerful indictment of the usual hip-
hop video displays of conspicuous consumption; Zooming out to the macro and you realize that
Dizzee and guest rapper Bun B - who hails from Houston - are looking at the economic wreckage
that's all too common the South. That said, the ending section goes in an entirely different direc- Vampire
tion when we learn that Dizzee and Bun B are there to close a deal for a pair of high-tech gangster
specs that let the wearer detect True G's and snitches. It's a little bit sci-fi for my taste and basical- Weekend
ly obliterates my "deep" reading, but doesn't diminish the impact of the realness that precedes it.

And the music continues. It's another fabulous month of cool new music from the
one and only Promo Only. Our June 2008 club overview kicks off with Mainstream
Club, our flagship series and several superstar acts flexing their musical muscles.
Britney Spears drops her latest single “Break The Ice” featuring a lively Twisted Dee
Remix. Next up comes the cerebral one, Moby, whose latest cut “Disco Lies” has
several remixes hitting the dance floors lately. This month we feature a Spencer &
Hill remix that is rugged and progressive. London's Robbie Williams looks to blow
things up with “Lovelight” and a very housed up Soul Seekerz Vocal Mix. The B-52's
give us the quirky “FunPlex,” with a CSS Extended Remix. This eccentric new track
has B-52's written all over it with the crazy vocals and vintage arrangement. NYC's
Chris “The Greek” Panaghi gets all funky on us with the cool, discoey “My Life,”
taken from his excellent full length Now's The Time. With a stirring vocal workout by
newcomer Amber Dirks, Panaghi looks to rise above the DJ/remix life and step into
doing his own thing. The results are very satisfactory indeed. Kimberly Locke does
the vocorder thing with “Fall”, and a sizzling Almighty Club Mix. Supafly takes us on
another exquisite vocal journey with the uplifting “Be Together.” Madonna's “4
Minutes” gets a dazzling Bob Sinclair Space Funk Remix which features a sick synth
hook and a delicious deep groove. Oh and yes it also features Justin Timberlake. G-Unit
The unstoppable Inaya Day showcases her awe-inspiring vocals again, this time on
Mr.Timothy's “Stand By Me” and a roof raising Dirty South Remix. Robbie Rivera gets
us “Back To Zero,” with this gorgeous piece that features Denise Rivera. And you
gotta love Attorney Client Prviledge ft. DBL and their new single “Nonsense Words
(House Music Is Not About).” It's a spoken word vocal house offering that may take
some getting used to but it still works.

The Fashion opens up our Alternative Club series with “Solo Impala (Take The
Money And Run)” a slick little rock/latin fusion number that features some great
chord changes cool vocals and a catchy hook. Florian Kruse gets all deep on us with
“In My Scope”, a deep and dirty instrumental house piece. We're digging the tech
house vibe of Steve Mills' “Nothing Comes To Mind,” a smooth, dramatic club
instrumental that will definitely get some Ibiza love. And finally Matt Rowan And
Jaytech unleash “Spincycle,” which features a rugged, electro-styled Oliver Giacomotto Does It Offend
Remix. You,Yeah?
Urban Club boast several new cuts that already or will have immediate street 'cred.
First up you gotta love the collaboration of Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park on
Busta's “We Made It,” a radio ready hooky gem. G-Unit gets down and dirty with
the swing groove of “Rider Pt 2.” Snoop follows up “Sexual Seduction” with the pop
ballad “Can't Say Goodbye” which features the soulful pipes of the Gap Band's
Charlie Wilson. The Roots bring their acoustic jazzy groove to the table with “Rising
Up” featuring Wale & Chrisette Michele. Usher's “Love In This Club Pt. 2” gets a
cool makeover with Lil Wayne & Beyonce onboard. The result is more of a ballad
than the original. Fat Joe keeps it street with “Ain't Sayin' Nothin'” featuring Plies
and Dre. The Game expresses his pain on “The Game's Pain,” a funky hooky hip hop
number with a hint of pop and features Keyshia Cole. G-Unit shows up again with
the provocative and suggestive “I Like The Way She Do It.” Busta also does an
encore performance this time with retro-styled “Don't Touch Me (Throw Da Water
On 'Em).” Flo-Rida who has been on an absolute roll lately drops the beatbox JUNE 08 MAINSTREAM CLUB
