One of Windsor’s most unique neighborhoods is the Historic
District, which is located from the Farmington River along Rt.
159 (Palisado Avenue) as far as Bissell Ferry Road. It is
Windsor’s oldest neighborhood and, in fact, is the oldest
neighborhood in Connecticut. The green in front of Sill House was
the site of the stockade (or Palisade) built during the
        Pequot War of 1637.

Today, traveling north on Palisado Avenue during almost any
season, the activity downtown rapidly gives away to a quiet tree
lined street of historic homes and buildings and the First Church
in Windsor, the place of worship for many settlers who came
from England on the ship Mary and John in 1630. Visit the
Palisado Cemetery and you will see a gravesite marked 1644,
the oldest in Connecticut. Go across the street to the monument
on the green and you will find the names of those who created
this unique neighborhood out of the wilderness almost
        375 years ago.

Windsor’s Historic District is a neighborhood like no other in our
state and is surely worth a visit if for no other reason than to
reflect on the skill and bravery of the people who lived there,
        so long ago.
