The family-run winery Steininger is situated in Langenlois in the Kamptal Valley. Lower Austria is well-known for the Grüner
Veltliner and this is also the strength of the winery. Grüner Veltliner represents over 50 % of their production. It can be found
in different styles, from a light summer wine to powerful and voluminous full bodied wines as well as dessert wines. The
Steininger winery is also well known for their sparkling wines which are produced according to the traditional method.
Excellent base wines and vigilant second fermentation are the keys to obtaining great sparkling wines. All of the sparklings
are single vintage and single varietal and represent their typical varietal characteristics: Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc,
Riesling, Muskateller, Traminer and Zweigelt in red.

Winzer Krems is one of the most significant producers of estate bottled quality wine in Austria. Its origins go back to the
oldest wine growers association of central Europe founded in 1447. Until today WINZER KREMS guarantees the highest
quality standard and maintains wine as a valuable cultural asset. According to this tradition the grapes are still exclusively
handpicked. Winzer Krems specializes in two unique Austrian grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner (white) and Blauer Zweigelt
(red).State-of-the-art equipment is used to extract the juice most carefully by pneumatic presses and to ferment under
controlled temperature. The results are fine fruity wines with pronounced varietal character and pureness.

The Prieler Winery produces some of Austria’s best wines in an area covering 20 hectares. Engelbert Prieler, together with
his wife Irmgard, took over the winery from his parents in 1972, and even back then recognized the importance of reviving
the old vineyard as well as to reduce the number of vine varieties grown on the estate. From 1997, Silvia and Georg Prieler
began supporting their parents on both the winemaking and marketing aspects of the winery. The philosophy of the family
estate philosophy can be described in one sentence: Prieler wines are typical of the region, you can recognize the
characteristics of the grape variety and the terroir.

The name of Lenz Moser is inextricably linked with wine-growing in Austria. The current Lenz Moser estate winery in
Rohrendorf near Krems, first mentioned in an official document as early as 1040, is considered the point of departure for
significant impulses aimed at preserving Austrian wine culture. For example, the „Lenz Moser high training system“ was
invented here, which revolutionised viticulture in the 50’s. It was this spirit of pioneership that turned the Lenz Moser winery
into what it is today: the market leader for Austrian quality wines in the domestic market. Moreover, being the most
important exporter of Austrian quality wine in bottles, Lenz Moser contributes to disseminating Austria’s wine culture into
many countries of Europe, the USA, Canada and the Far East.

The Bründlmayer family presently manages 75 ha in the best locations around Langenlois. Among the Grüner Veltliners, are
some stars like the classics "Loiser Berg" and "Berg-Vogelsang" or the "reserves" from Lamm and Käferberg. Among the
Rieslings, the fruity Steinmassel competes every year with the elegantly structured Heiligenstein. The "Alte Reben" (old
vines) and "LYRA" of the Heiligenstein embody terroir and concentration. Hugh Johnson quotes "Bründlmayer Brut" as
"Austria's Best Sekt". Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay belong to Bründlmayer’s acclaimed specialities as
well as the rare sweet wines. "Almost every wine, from the lightest Grüner Veltliner to the red wine and the sparkling wine
has what it takes to be the best of the vintage in its category." (Falstaff)

SCHLOSS GOBELSBURG is the oldest winery in the Danube area Kamptal with a documented viticultural history dating
back to the 12th century, when Cistercian monks from Burgundy started to work their first vineyards in the area. Gobelsburg
has been run by Michael Moosbrugger (Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2006, Golden glass Sweden 2007) since 1996.
Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the winery’s most important varieties. Aside from the classic fruity and spicy wines, the
winemaker’s primary focus is on the different types of soil, as reflected in single-variety wines which are produced. In a new
development, attention has turned to production methods from the winery’s rich history. This is the idea behind the Grüner
Veltliner TRADITION, which pays homage to the traditions of the 19th century.

the cornerstone for aromatic and complex Sauvignon Blancs and Morillons, the region’s synonym for Chardonnay. The
“Steirische Klassik” STK° wines are bottled quite young and feature maximum fruitiness and freshness whereas the more
mature wines are aged separately for each vineyard. These premium wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in
vineyards that boast outstanding soil and a particularly favorable microclimate. The classification system distinguishes

More and more do we want to concentrate on what is ours and on what makes us different. On the one hand, because we
are passionate about local grape varieties. On the other hand, in order to offer a clear, understandable and sharp profile.
For this reason local grape varieties play a major role in our vineyards, notably Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent as
well as Weissburgunder and Chardonnay. These are the wines we have favoured over the last years when it came to
cultivating new vineyards. We have made the experience and we are convinced that these grape varieties, which are not
only typically Austrian but also characteristic of the region around Lake Neusiedl, are the perfect ambassadors of our soils,
our climate, our uniqueness and our region.

Fred Loimer manages a total of 60 hectares of vineyards in some of the best sites around Langenlois. Year after year, he
impresses by his benchmarking Grüner Veltliners (especially from the Käferberg and Spiegel) and Rieslings (unsurpassed
from the Seeberg and Steinmassl) which perfectly reflect the high quality and the special microclimates of the Kamptal. With
the 2000 vintage, Fred Loimer started to vinify and store the wines in his new winery whose architecture caused quite a stir.
Since the end of 2005, the vineyard and cellar work have been conducted according to biodynamic principles. Being a site-
and terroir-driven character, Fred Loimer also tries to show the Thermenregion´s potential under the polarizing Schellmann
label with an intriguing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Felsner winery is one of Austria's rising wineries, acclaimed for excellent dry white wines. Manfred Felsner cultivates the
very best vineyard sites - many of them with vines of 40 years or more - in Gedersdorf and Rohrendorf, near Krems. He
took over the family's estate in 1990 and has worked very hard, recultivating steep slopes and old vines. He and his family
use minimal intervention in the vineyard and he has been reducing yields for more expressive wines. His efforts have been
rewarded by numerous national and international awards. Manfred Felsner has set out to produce single-vineyard wines,
clearly expressive of their variety and their Kremstal origin. Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and St. Laurent are most important.
Wines of elegance, fruit and complexity.

The traditional Sonnhof courtyard dating back to the 16th century - with its 700-year-old natural cellar labyrinth - is
undoubtedly one of Austria's most impressive wineries. As founding members of "Traditionsweingüter Österreichs" the
Jurtschitsch brothers cultivate 69 hectares of prime vineyard sites around Langenlois, primarily on barren stony or loess
terraces. Compost and green manure only have been used to fertilize the soil since the 1970s, with the goal of maintaining
and promoting the ecological balance in the vineyards. Since 2009 the vineyard management is certified according to the
controlled organic methods. As a result, the grapes have ideal conditions for producing white, red and sweet wines with the
distinctive characteristics of their vintage and location.

Southern Styria is a traditional production area which enjoys excellent growing conditions, especially for white grapes. For
this reason, 95% of the vineyard area at our Estate is devoted to white varieties. We aim to make two basic styles of wine at
the Estate, of which the majority belongs to the category known as “Steirische Klassik STK”. Under the appellation
„Steirische Klassik STK® “ one finds those wines that are fresh and fruity, with lots of varietal character. They display the
typical style of their grape variety. The other style is represented by the wines from selected vineyards (STK®-Lagenweine).
Here we seek to make wines from certain specific sites which have a particularly distinctive terroir and which are particularly
suited to certain grape varieties.

Franz Weninger-one of the pioneers of quality wine growing in Austria. His way of working is based on the principle of
exerting as little influence on the growth of the plants as possible so that the vines will once again find their natural balance.
Converting to a bio-dynamic production method was seen as a logical step toward coming closer to nature and improving
quality. Today he owns 30 hectares of vineyards in and around Horitschon, most of them have been planted with
Blaufränkisch, Merlot, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Some of the Blaufränkisch vines from the Hochäcker
and Dürrau sites are up to 80 years old, the average age of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines is 20 years. The soil
here features a deep, moderately heavy loamy topsoil and is rich in clay and iron.

The winery MAD – Haus Marienberg is in the wine growing area Neusiedlersee – Hügelland. We have 30 ha vineyard and
produce 75% red wine and 25% white wine. The main grape variety is Blaufränkisch, after that is Zweigelt and the
Welschriesling. Our soils are very difficult. We have loamy, black earth soils in the hill and sandy loess soils near the Lake
Neusiedl. The region has a pannonian climate, with strictly winter and hot summer. Matthias and his son Sebastian works
for the management. Christian the Son in law, is in the cellar and his wife Rafaela in the office. Tobias, the second son from
Matthias helps his uncle in the cellar and in the vineyards. Great wine lives, it changes and ripens. Our respect for this
property defines our way of running a vineyard and making wine. Cheers!

In St. Georgen, on the slopes of the Leithagebirge, thrive and prosper our vines. The grapes which are produced in accord
with the nature bring typically fruit and mineral structure in our wines. The different composition of the soils and the micro -
climate zones enable the vinification of white, red and sweet wines of highest quality. We always work in accord with the
nature under consideration of weather and climatic conditions, to do the right work in the vineyard to the right time. Varietal
characteristics of aromatic, mineral zest, development potential and unmistakable character of the wines are reached
through careful vinification methods every year. The “Leithaberg” with its uniqueness is ideology and purpose in life for us.

Erwin Tinhof completed his studies of agriculture at Vienna's University of Agriculture, attended Montpellier University for
one semester and received further training at one of the most renowed wineries of Southern France, Mas de Daumas

Tinhof's vineyards cover an area of 27 acres, planted with 20 to 30 years old vines of almost exclusively pure Austrian
varieties such as Neuburger, Muskat and Pinot Blanc as well as Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent. His
uncompromising drive for quality allowed Erwin Tinhof to place his elegant, fruity wines also in the international wine-trading

It is not only tradition, it is passion, it is conviction, it is the belief in herself with which many years ago Birgit Braunstein took
over the wine-growing business of her family of more than 400 years of wine-growing tradition. 4000 years in close
cooperation with nature in Burgenland, a unique landscape on Lake Neusiedl. Lake Neusiedl has been a UNESCO World
Cultural Heritage since 13 December 2001. Thus the region shares a mutual heritage with 721 sites worldwide and a
common heritage with history, the present day and the future for all of humanity. In 1996 Birgit Braunstein vinified her first
wine and found with it, as she says “a moment of real happiness in her life”. To show her happiness further, she has placed
an Irish four-leaf clover on her etiquettes, Two BB´s.

At this family-run winery in Deutschkreutz, terroir is the basis for quality. The climate and soils here in the Blaufränkischland,
as the Mittelburgenland wine region is also known, offer the ideal conditions for robust and elegant red wines. Growing the
vines is a pleasure for Silvia Heinrich - giving individual attention to each vine, sensing how every decision has its effect.
"The less, the better " is the Heinrich family motto, using near-natural methods of cultivation. Not because it's the latest
trend but because consideration for nature is a must in order to be able to pass on the environment as intact as possible to
the next generation. Numerous national and international accolades testify to the Heinrich family´s quality ambitions.

wineries like Château Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Braida in Piedmont and Errazuriz in Chile. Managing the family winery
comes natural to Judith who has a preference for the typical regional varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. She
practices biodynamic viticulture in the best sites in Gols near lake Neusiedl. Judith Beck manipulates her wines as little as
possible in the vinification process seeking varietal expression and unique vintage character. The resulting wines are
powerful, well-structured, complex and possess good ageing potential.

Martin Nigl cultivated 25 hectares of wine. The vineyards are partially located on the hill terraces of the Kremstal, on the
fringes of the Bohemian grounds and in a river valley. However, the vineyards of the estate are spread in different locations.
After extensive reconstruction, the Nigl winery now utilises primarily steel tanks for vinification and maturing of its wines.
From the substantial selection of Veltliner, the elegant “Privat - Senftenberger Piri" and the noble, rich with extracts “Alte
Reben” (old vines) are worth mentioning. A favourite over the years has been the Riesling from the Hochäcker vineyard,
which optimally reflects its soil over bed rock. It is generally accepted that Martin knows how to make great Veltliner and
Riesling.

The Nine Austrian Wine Styles (Categories)

Cat. 1: Sparkling wine
Austria produces first-class sparkling wines – a tradition that goes back to the 19th century.
Specialists in the bubbly sector – from light Frizzante to hand-riddled premium sparking wine –
extend from private “manufacturers” to larger wineries.

Cat. 2: White wine – light and fresh
This range of Austrian white wines are lively, vibrant, and fit perfectly to any season: from the
“Junger Österreicher” to ” Steirischer Junker”; from a light Grüner Veltliner, such as a Steinfeder
from the Wachau, to a delicate, spicy Welschriesling from Styria; and there are those “tasty”
Schmeckerten with low alcohol, like Muskateller or Müller-Thurgau.

Cat. 3: White wine – classic & dry
Austria´s classic white wines are filled with freshness, fine acidity, great elegance and plenty of
character. They are medium-bodied as well. This clear profile includes: Grüner Veltliner at the
Kabinett level - especially the DAC wines (Weinviertel DAC and Traisental DAC); fresh Riesling from
the wine-growing areas along the Danube river; elegant Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from
Burgenland, plus representatives in the Styrian Classic family (Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon,
Weißburgunder). The classic dry white wines are produced in all of Austria´s wine-growing areas.

Cat. 4: White wine – powerful & bodied
This category´s profile is best described with „Reserve“. The wines are vinified dry with body and
extract, opulence and concentration. Besides the majority of wines which are classically vinified are
those reflecting an international character through their maturation in small oak barrels. Prime
examples are site wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling (such as Smaragd-level wines from the
Wachau and premium wines from the area along the Danube or from the Weinviertel). Highly
individual personalities are the powerful Zierfandler and Rotgipfler varietals from the
Thermenregion, as well as the complex Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from Burgenland.
Rounding out the category are the great Steiermark (Styria) site wines, whose varieties include
Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, plus specialities from Vienna like
Neuburger, Roter Veltliner and the Gemischter Satz.

Cat. 5: Rosé – racy & fruit-toned
Rosés come from all of the country´s wine-growing areas and convey a wide range of expressions.
For example, there are charming young wines like the Primus Pannonikus from Burgenland, and
there are the fresh Zweigelt and St. Laurent from Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), as well as the
racy, zesty Schilcher from Weststeiermark (West Styria).

                                                                                                              80
The Nine Austrian Wine Styles (Categories)

Cat. 6: Red wine – classic and fruity
These are wines vinified in the classic style, and matured in either large wooden casks or steel
tanks. They exude typically Austrian fruitiness, but also show depth and are not too high in alcohol:
this means wines that reflect typicity of origin, elegance and pure drinking pleasure. Playing a
leading role in this category are Zweigelt, which is at home in nearly all of the wine-growing areas,
notably Carnuntum; and Blaufränkisch, of which enticing variants are produced especially in
        Mittelburgenland.

Cat. 7: Red wine - compact and concentrated
The wines of this level are compact and full; wines of complexity, depth and long ageing potential.
They are concentrated red wines that highlight a rich array of grape varieties and sites. Some are
produced as cuvées with just moderate expressions of wood. While they are matured in barriques,
these top red wines reflect depth of fruit and typicity of terroir. Particularly noteworthy is that the
Austrian varieties like Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent stand out from classics like Pinot Noir
and the international varietals like Cabernet & Co.

Cat. 8: White wine – fruity sweetness & muscular intensity
Wines in the higher Spätlese and Auslese ranges have some of the greatest storage potential of
Austrian wines. In their youth, these wines exude plenty of finesse with supple sweetness and a
vivid fruit-acidity play. The palette extends from aromatic Muskat-Ottonel from Burgenland,
(Gewürz-)Traminer from Steiermark (Styria), and Neuburger, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Grüner
Veltliner and Riesling from the various wine-growing areas, to the great Spätlesen and Auslesen of
the special varietals Zierfandler and Rotgipfler from the Gumpoldskirchen area.

Cat. 9: Noble sweet wines
These include Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen, Strohwein and Schilfwein, Eiswein
with expressive, buttery smoothness, and the nobly refined Ruster Ausbruch. Characteristic of
these sweet wine rarities are natural residual sweetness and highly-concentrated acidity, usually in
combination with the incomparable noble rot flavours. In this group, Austria is truly world class.
However, the category does have slight complications, such as the lack of a cohesive identity of
origin, especially in comparison to Tokaji and Sauternes.
