Mini-Lesson Procedure:
Objectives: 1. TLW utilize research and problem solving skills to complete the real world simulation,
(list all that apply)
The Stock Market Game, over a period of seven months. (The Stock Market game is a real-world
simulation that enables students to discover the risks and rewards involved in decision-making, the sources and
uses of capital, and other related economic concepts. Students (working in small groups) will invest a
hypothetical $100,000 in Nasdaq, AMEX, and NYSE listed common stocks.)
2. TLW manage their individual portfolio that will contain a record of the companies they
research, their weekly trades, weekly account summaries, and group holdings.
3. TLW use graphing skills weekly to track the movements their first personal purchase in
order to keep a visual record of the stock’s gains and losses.
4. TLW use Inspiration software to create a visual of the stocks they personally purchased
during the game’s duration.
Procedures: Type in the cell below.
1) Introduce the concept of parent companies and subsidiaries through a discussion of brand names. (Some companies have
products under different brand names. TTW demonstrate using www.google.com how to discover which company makes a
particular product after leading in the activity below:
Ask students to identify the name of the company that makes Mrs. Smith’s Apple Pie (If they don’t guess Kellogg’s, repeat the question while
holding up Eggo Waffles, the Pop Tarts, and Frosted Flakes.)
Repeat with Kiwi, L’eggs, Hanes, Champion, Ball Park, and Hillshire Farms products. (It is unlikely they will guess
that all these are Sara Lee companies! Hold up the Sara Lee dessert last!)
2) Introduce basic economics vocabulary using the Umps Fwat story or video. (Lesson plan available at
www.vcee.org/umpsfwat.htm )
3) TLW complete A Stock Market IQ Quiz (Lesson One from Learning From the Market). After students have completed this
True/False pretest quiz, TTW share the correct answers and lead in a group discussion related to the items.
4) TLW study the financial page that reports stock prices from the local newspaper. TTW lead in a discussion of the different columns.
(Stock Name is listed first, # of Sales is listed second, and the Stock’s Last Price (from the previous day) is listed third.) The group will
also discuss the Biggest Gainers, Most Active, and Biggest Losers listings in the paper.
5) TLW work with a partner to complete the activity Symbol Search (attached). They will use www.finance.yahoo.com to assist
them in discovering the Ticker for any stock they are interested in purchasing. (Students can discover current stock prices,
descriptions of the company in Company Profile, graphs that show the company’s gains and losses, and also visit the company’s
Home Page using this website.)
6) Students will keep a portfolio of weekly research, trades, account summaries, and group holdings. (The website
www.smgww.org is where they can gather data for their portfolios.)
7) Students will graph the weekly gains and losses of the first stock purchased in order to keep a visual record.
8) Using Inspiration software students will complete a concept map of their investments during the course of the game. The
game’s logo will be in the center and each company’s logo will be added as they are purchased.
