Becoming an alBerta
certified journeyperson
is an exciting experience!
As an apprentice you learn from a certified tradesperson and spend 4-12 weeks per year in
technical training at a college or technical institute. This combination of on-the-job and
technical training helps to build a solid foundation to a rewarding career in the trades.
The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board, in partnership with industry and the
Government of Alberta, created the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Family
of Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to recognize the excellence of Alberta
apprentices and trainees like you and encourage you to continue and complete your
apprenticeship or occupational training. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of
employer recommendation and technical training marks.
You could be eligible for a scholarship – apply today!
ThE BAcKGroUND
Since 2002, joint contributions from industry members and the Government of Alberta have created scholarships for registered
apprentices as well as those graduating from the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) high school program or pre-apprenticeship
programs. The number of scholarships continues to grow every year.
Do yoU QUAliFy For A ScholArShip?
You may qualify for one or more scholarships if you have taken apprenticeship technical training in the last year and have at least
one period of technical training left (some exceptions apply) or you have successfully completed a recognized pre-apprenticeship
program or you were a RAP apprentice. Download your scholarship application form at www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca or head to your
nearest Apprenticeship and Industry Training office to pick up an application form today. Hard copies of the application can also be picked
up at your institution’s Registrar’s or Student Awards office. The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.

BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE
a message from
raymond massey
Chair of the Alberta Apprenticeship
and Industry Training Board
Welcome! I am pleased to present the 2011 Alberta Apprenticeship and
Industry Training Board Family of Scholarships booklet. With the help of our
industry partners, the Board is delighted to be able to offer such a dynamic
scholarship program to the apprentices in Alberta. Scholarships are an
integral component in recognizing excellence in apprenticeship.
These scholarships are an investment in Alberta’s skilled workforce. Donors
play a vital role in assisting apprentices with further development in their
trade or occupation while providing added incentive to young people
considering a career in the trades.
Please take the time to read about our scholarship categories, and if you are
an apprentice with more training to attend, be sure to apply!
Visit www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca for applications and up-to-date news on
scholarships. Applications are also available at any Apprenticeship and
Industry Training office or at your institution’s Registrar’s or Student Awards
office. Remember to apply by June 30, 2011.
Sincerely,
Raymond Massey

SCHOLARSHIPS
pre-apprentice scHolarsHips
In 2008, the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board created a new category of scholarships. The Board identified that
apprentices should be encouraged to do their best in apprenticeship training throughout their time in the system, including those who
have started in pre-apprenticeship training. The Board decided that encouragement should be given to people who take the initiative to
enter a pre-apprenticeship program to help prepare themselves for the workplace and technical training.
Eligibility
Pre-apprentices who have recently graduated from a recognized pre-apprenticeship training program are eligible to apply for these
scholarships. Eligible pre-apprenticeship programs must include at least four weeks (120 hours) of trades-related instruction, not
including any work experience component. Visit www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca to download a copy of the pre-apprentice scholarship
application. The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.
There are 11 pre-apprenticeship scholarships, each with a value of $1,000. Scholarship recipients can claim their scholarship upon
enrollment in their first or next period of technical training.

Created in 2001, the RAP scholarships are designed to recognize the accomplishments of Alberta high school students in the
Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), and to encourage students to continue in their apprenticeship. The funds for the
scholarships are provided by a joint investment of donations from the private sector and the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund.
Up to 500 RAP scholarships are available each year. Each scholarship is $1,000. RAP scholarship recipients receive their funds when
they attend their next period of technical training.
Eligibility
To determine your eligibility and download a RAP scholarship application, visit www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca. Anyone who was a

SCHOLARSHIPS
ait scHolarsHips
Created in 2002, the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Scholarships are designed to recognize the excellence
of Alberta apprentices in designated trades or trainees in designated occupations, and to encourage recipients to complete their
apprenticeship or occupational training programs.
There are over 340 AIT scholarships available. They are listed here alphabetically by category, with some categories including more than
one trade. Each scholarship is $1,000. AIT scholarship recipients receive their funds when they attend their next period of technical
training.
Remember that you do not apply for a specific AIT scholarship. You apply with just one application form, making you eligible for AIT
scholarships where your applicant information matches the donor selection criteria.
Eligibility
To determine your eligibility and download an AIT scholarship application, visit www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca. You must have completed
at least one period of technical training and have at least one period of technical training left in order to apply for an AIT scholarship.
Exceptions to this rule are trades with one period of technical training and apprentices in trades with two periods of technical training
who take both of their training periods between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. More information on eligibility is listed on the application
form and the Tradesecrets website. The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.

SCHOLARSHIPS
top apprentice scHolarsHips
Scholarship donors expressed a wish to recognize apprentices with very high achievement in their technical training and a strong
employer recommendation. In 2008, the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board created the Top Apprentice
Scholarships to reward these outstanding apprentices.
Eligibility
Apprentices do not apply for the Top Apprentice Scholarships. The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board determines the
top apprentice for each scholarship based on apprentices’ technical training marks and other criteria set forth by the donor. Successful
apprentices will automatically be awarded the scholarship and notified by mail.
There are 13 Top Apprentice Scholarships with a value of $1,500 each. Scholarship recipients can claim their scholarships upon enrollment
in their next period of technical training.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
frequently asked questions
Where can I get a scholarship application form?
All three (RAP, AIT and Pre-Apprentice) application forms are available at any of our Apprenticeship and Industry Training offices (see
page 53 for a list of our offices and find the one nearest you), at the institution where you took your apprenticeship technical training or
online at www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca. If you are currently a high school student graduating this year, a RAP application was mailed
directly to you.
When is the scholarship application deadline?
The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.
When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship?
All recipients will receive notification by mail by October 31.
Does it take a long time to apply for a scholarship?
Not at all. The application form takes just minutes to fill out. Be sure to fill out the correct application form for the scholarships you are
applying for (RAP, AIT or Pre-Apprentice). Make sure you have your employer fill out the recommendation form. Sign your documents.
If you follow the handy checklist provided in each application form, you should be done fairly quickly. Send the completed application
to the address provided on the back of the application form.
Can I apply for a specific AIT scholarship?
No. We have simplified the process for you. There is one AIT application form. Fill it out and you will be considered for every AIT
scholarship where you meet the minimum criteria. (Remember you still have to fill out separate application forms for Pre-Apprentice
scholarships and RAP scholarships).
I was a RAP student but I didn’t apply for a RAP scholarship. Can I apply for one now
that I’ve graduated high school?
Yes. If you were a RAP student in high school and never received a RAP scholarship, you can apply for a RAP scholarship as long as you
have at least one period of technical training left to complete. More information on eligibility is listed on the application form.
Can I be awarded more than one scholarship?
Yes, but generally you are only awarded one scholarship per year. You can only receive a RAP scholarship once.
50 ALBERTA APPRENTICESHIP AND INDUSTRY TRAINING BOARD FAMILY OF SCHOLARSHIPS 2011
Do I receive scholarship money as soon as I
am awarded the scholarship?
No. In order to receive your scholarship money, you must be
attending your next period of technical training. A confirmation
of enrollment form is mailed to you with a letter confirming
you have been awarded a scholarship. As soon as you
start your next period of technical training, fill out the
confirmation of enrollment form, have the registrar’s office
fill out their portion of the enrollment form, and mail it to
Alberta Scholarship Programs (the address is provided on
the enrollment form). you are responsible for sending in
the enrollment form.
I am planning to challenge my next period
technical training exam without attending
the technical training. Do I still receive my
scholarship?
No. Scholarship money can only be given to recipients
who attend technical training and who have confirmed their
attendance. Challenging an exam does not constitute having
attended technical training.
How are scholarship recipients selected?
Selection of scholarship recipients is made by a committee
established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry
Training Board. Recipients are selected on the basis of
their marks, a description about themselves, an employer
recommendation and for a few scholarships, financial need.
How long do I have to claim my scholarship
money?
You have up to 5 years from the time you were notified of your
scholarship to take technical training and claim your scholarship.
What if I have more questions?
Please visit www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca and click on
“Scholarships and Awards.” You can also contact Alberta
Scholarship Programs regarding the status and payment
of your scholarship by calling (780) 427-8640 or emailing
scholarships@gov.ab.ca.
