Basic Audiometry and Hearing Problems
Now offered as an online course by the College of Extended Learning at California State University,
This course examines the anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism including the nature of
the acoustic stimulus, hearing disorders, problems of the hard of hearing and pure-tone audiometry.
The course leads to the certificate of registration as school audiometrist, granted by the California
Department of Health Services upon successful completion. (4 units, quarter system)
Students work independently to complete the bulk of the course online within specified course dates.
Spring 2011 Course Dates: April 4 - June 11, 2011.
Course requires a hands-on, in-person final examination offered on the CSUSB campus. Students
outside the Southern California area may be able to complete this course by having a state-licensed
audiologist proctor the final exam. Contact (email@example.com ) for more information.
Access to a computer with Internet access and a reliable, current E-mail address is required and
software must include Microsoft Word. You also need access to a portable audiometer and a proctor
(preferably a licensed audiologist, but a certified school audiometrist is acceptable) to supervise your
practical assignments. The final exam is both a written (on the Internet) and a practical (in person)
There are also two required textbooks (one of which is free) and students are encouraged to register
early to allow time to get their texts. Details of course requirements are sent to students upon

Successful completion of the course earns 4 quarter units of degree-applicable level credit and qualifies
students to apply directly for a School Audiometrist Certificate.
While designed for school nurses and other school-based personnel, this course may be of interest to
students considering a career in Audiology or Deaf Education. This course is a prerequisite for all nurses
applying for their School Nurse Credential.
