News and Announcements
New Regional Oral Health Consultant Joins DHI
Dr. Jim Sutherland, DDS, MPH, is the founder of Oral Health Improvements, LLC, a consulting firm focused on
improving the oral health of the underserved. He retired from the United States Public Health Service in 2009
at the rank of Captain and was most recently stationed in Denver as Region 8 Dental Consultant for the Health
Resources and Services Administration (HSRA). At HRSA, he facilitated state dental summits and the
development of oral health coalitions, and provided dental public health consultation at the local, state,
regional, and national levels. Dr. Sutherland received his DDS and MPH degrees from the University of North
Carolina. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health.
Study Finds Illinois Dental Practices Less Likely to Treat Children on Medicaid
In a study published in Pediatrics and reported by Reuters Health, dental practices in Cook County, Ill., were
significantly less willing to give an emergency appointment to a Medicaid-enrolled child than a child with private
insurance. Even practices enrolled in the state's Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program were more
willing to schedule appointments for a child with private insurance who needed emergency care, researchers
found. The authors note that Medicaid reimbursement rates and access to care may vary by state.
Such findings underscore the importance of establishing a dental home before an emergency, according to Dr.
Tegwyn Brickhouse, Virginia DHI State Dental Team Leader and head of pediatric dentistry at Virginia
Commonwealth University (Dr. Brickhouse was not involved in the study). "The biggest thing Medicaid
programs need to do is really be able to connect with the families, and help them make the right decisions
about finding a dental provider," she said. “I think (with) prevention, you're going to get a lot more bang for your
buck if they focus on getting the child to the dentist at an earlier age."
