Our calling is to reach out and invite everyone into the family of Christ, equipping us to worship, follow and serve Jesus.
Family of Christ Lutheran Church
Dear friends in Christ grace to you and peace…
As many of you know I am in Cardiac Rehabilitation on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. I am
over half way through the process and doing well. While at Rehab I exercise for an hour hooked up to
monitors and I have an hour of classes. Class subjects range from diet to stress to physiology of the heart.
I have learned more about fat and fiber than I ever wanted to know!
The fundamental message in Cardiac Rehab is that I must make a life-style change if my heart is to
strengthen and I am to avoid another exciting ride to the operating table. Life-style change includes diet,
exercise, and stress reduction. I am not really learning anything new. I have just not paid attention to all of
it in the past.
Now I have to live and act as if my life depended upon it—because it does! It’s still hard to make the
necessary changes even though I know that they are good for me. I still love my comfort foods and my
sedentary life. I don’t like making time to exercise…it gets in the way of things I would much rather do.
What does this have to do with our Christian faith? The dynamic of my resistance to life-style changes is
the same dynamic as my resistance to living a life of discipleship. I know the life that is pleasing to God. I
know the spiritual disciplines. I know that they are as good for my spirit as exercise is good for my heart.
What are the Marks of our Discipleship?
Read the Bible daily
Serve in and beyond the congregation
Build spiritual relationships
Give a tithe (10%) and beyond
Each and every one is good for us. Through them we draw closer to God and find strength for this
demanding life. Through them we find support to continue growing in our faith. All six marks of discipleship
do for us spiritually what physical life-style changes do for us physically. Yet I continually fall back into old
patterns and habits.
Too easily we get ‘stuck’ in our spiritual growth. We let half-hearted measures suffice. We are restless
and dissatisfied in our relationship with God. And yet, we choose to do none of the things that would answer
our prayers for a closer walk with God and a deeper experience of God’s love and grace. Why is that?
For me and cardiac rehab life-style change, it is because I am lazy. I want all the gain with none of the
pain. I want to do just enough to get by because I liked my old life and I want to return to it. But though my
head tells me that to return to the old ways is death, my heart longs for the old ways when I could eat
anything I wanted and avoid exercise.
What am I to do?
I know that every day is a decision for health and a demand for healthy choices. Every day is a struggle to
overcome the ‘old Adam’ in me. But as I make the choices that I should, I am moved closer and closer to
The same holds true for my spiritual growth as well. I need to decide everyday to see, love, follow and
serve God. I need to seek God’s grace and strength to keep me at the path of discipleship. For me both the
physical and spiritual formation is a life sentence calling me beyond myself and into the loving arms of God.
Blessings on your journey,
