Name of the approach/ tool/project
Social and Environmental Responsibility in Petrobras

Description of the approach/tool/project description (methodology,
techniques and strategies used)
Petrobras will present at the stand its approach for Social a nd Environmental Responsibility
describing cases of its social and environmental program as well as its programs, investment
and research in cleaner fuels (biofuels) and climate friendly technologies.

Implementation methodologies
Petrobras follows three lines of action for it Social Program:
- Job and income generation
- Professional Education
- Guaranteeing of children and Adolescents´right

The program also respect diversity and address more vulnerable groups such as: eldery,
women, disable, afro-descents and indigenous group.

Petrobras Environmental Program initiatives focus on Water: Freshwater and Marine,
including their biodiversity. Its lines of actions are:

- Recovery and conservation of environments that have a water body (surface, underground,
coastal or marine)
- Implementation of integrated water resources management
- Promotion of rational use of water resources
- Environmental Education

Programs, investments and research in cleaner fuels and climate friendly technologies
include:

Biofuels
   • Biodiesel ( Non-conventional bioethanol, Lignocellulosic bioethanol, Castor oil seed
       cake bioethanol)
   • Ethanol pipelines and vessels projects
   • H-BIO (Vegetable/animal oil hydrogenation)
   • Synthetic biofuel (BTL)

Solar Energy
   • Photovoltaic
   • implementation largest photovoltaic park of Latin America
   • Solar energy at Petrobras Industrial Plants
   • Development of Brazilian phovoltaic cells

Wind Power
   • Wind Power Unit at Macau – RN
   • Mapping Wind Power at strategic areas in Brazil

What is innovative about th is approach/tool/project
The Social and Environmental Programs are innovative for their multi institutionality – the
involvement of large array of partnerships from National to Local Governments, from NGOs
to other companies, from international institution to local communities. The public selection of
projects is a novel aspect of democratization of the access for sponsorship. Every year or
two an edition of public selection is launched by Petrobras and the whole process of
application is disclosure and ma ke public available. The social technology program
supported by Petrobras is another innovative example of possibility of replication of social
and environmental techniques in different regions with same context and problematic.

The innovative aspects of the research and production of biofuels by Petrobras are the new
inputs and technologies. The use of seeds such as
castor, cotton, and palm for producing biodiesel will not only result in a cleaner fuel but will
also enhance family agriculture in low income rural areas. The H-Bio, for its turn, it is a new
technology path of production, a refining process that utilizes vegetable oils as an input, in
order to obtain diesel oil with no waste, simple logistics, improving diesel quality and indeed
using flexible vegetable oil source. Moreover, Petrobras is developing export programs of
ethanol due Brazilian expertise in ethanol production, consumption (flex-fuels fleet) and
logistic of distribution.
