Salem Middle School Health and Physical Education Policies and Expectations Health and Physical Education at Salem Middle School is considered an integral component of the total education process. We feel it is important that the middle school student experience a curriculum that stresses the development of physical fitness and fundamental motor skills as well as fostering an understanding of health issues in order to pursue a healthy and vigorous lifestyle. It is our goal to create a learning environment that is both safe and fun. To accomplish this goal, we would like for all students and parents to be aware of the policies and expectations that will be followed in our classes. They are as follows: A. Policies and expectations for students while in Physical Education class: 1. Horseplay in the gym facility is NOT tolerated. 2. Students are not to use PE equipment in the gym or outside playing areas unless supervised and given permission to use the equipment. 3. In accordance with school policy and for safety reasons NO gum, candy or food is allowed in Physical Education classes. 4. Be prompt to class. A note is required to excuse tardiness. 5. Students will have 5 minutes to dress out at the start of class and 5 minutes to dress at the end of class. 6. Upon dressing out for class, each student must report to his or her assigned area on the gym floor and wait for roll call. B. Policies and expectations for dressing out in Physical Education class: 1. ALL STUDENTS MUST DRESS OUT IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS. Proper attire includes a required school issued uniform, which can be purchased from the PTA during the lunch periods. The cost of the shorts are $10.00 and the T-shirt is $5.00. Checks are required to be made out to the Salem PTA. Athletic shoes and socks are required as part of their uniform. No FLIPS FLOPS. Spandex shorts may be worn only as undergarments beneath regular PE shorts. Sweatpants and sweatshirts may be worn if needed because of the weather. 2. For safety reasons, students will NOT be allowed to wear hats, sunglasses, or jewelry of any sort, such as watches, rings, earrings, etc. during class. Hats may be worn outside for sun reasons. 3. Each student is EXPECTED to dress out and participate to the best of his or her ability. Failure to dress out properly will result in 5 points being DEDUCTED from their dressing out grade as well as 5 points off from the participation grade. However, the student is able to make up their participation grade with an alternate assignment given by their instructor. Consequences for non-dress outs are as follows: 1st offense: Verbal Warning (no points deducted) 2nd offense: Written notice will be sent home to be signed and returned by both student and parent. 3rd offense: Phone call home. 4th offense: Lunch detention. 5th offense: Guidance Referral 4.) A student may be excused from class with a note from a parent for a maximum of three consecutive days. If more days are required, a doctor’s note is needed. If a student does not have a note, then he or she will be EXPECTED to dress out and participate to the best of their ability. C. Policies and expectations for locker room usage: 1. Each student may use a locker ONLY during his/her class period. Each student is encouraged to bring his or her own lock to be used during that class period. ALL LOCKS MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE LOCKERS AT THE END OF EACH CLASS PERIOD. 2. All belongings are to be secured in a locker during class. Each student is responsible for securing his or her valuables and clothing in a locker. The teacher will lock the locker room once all of the students are out of the locker room. The teacher is NOT responsible for any items that are lost or stolen. PLEASE DO NOT BRING VALUABLES TO THE LOCKER ROOM. D. GRADES- Health and P.E. grades receive the same emphasis and value as grades in any other subject. Basis for grades is as follows: Physical Education: Participation- 25% Dressing Out- 15% Skills/Written- 10% Health: Tests/Projects- 25% Quizzes/In-class Assignments- 15% Notebook- 10% Please feel free to contact the Healthful Living Department if you or your child has any further questions or concerns at (919) 367-2465.
