Vol. 02, Issue 1 January 3, 2002

           ART ROSCOE HAS ONE FOOT
PLANS TO GROW PART OF ANOTHER
Although Art currently has only one foot, his condition is rapidly improving as .4 more feet are predicted
over the next few days. In fact, another foot was growing as this newsletter was being prepared, and it is
likely that by now, as you are reading this issue, there will be at least two complete feet. No, we are not
promoting a freak show. It was, however, a freak snowstorm that has hit west of the area of this month’s
feature club trip to the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area in New York’s Allegany State Park. This makes trip
coordinator Roger Meredith very happy, as he has been predicting this for weeks, and is anxious to lead a
full busload of people to visit Art Roscoe to marvel at his feet (we are talking snow, of course) in just a
couple of weeks. See Roger’s article later in this issue, as well as the trip ad and application, for more
information on this upcoming outing.

                                         NEWSLETTER HAS “NEW” NAME
In case you didn’t notice, the newsletter now actually has a name. “NASki Tips” recalls the early days of
our club, when NASki was one of the official nicknames for our club. So, while it isn’t particularly new, it
is a name that is unique to us. There are a few other minor changes in content, and the board will be
discussing whether the newsletter should continue to be issued every month. Any changes will take into
consideration the proper balance between the need to keep members informed and the amount of volunteer
effort involved in preparing and distributing the newsletter.

                                         PUBLIC WEB SITE ESTABLISHED
Thanks to our Web Curator, Lisa Lambert, the blackout of our GRC web site to off-site club members was
short-lived. As was announced at the club meeting last month, a new external (public) web page has been
established at http://naski.0catch.com. The content is identical to the internal (NASA GRC-only) web
page, except that the picture page is not part of the new external web page. Lisa will monitor the site usage

NASA SKI QUEEN GAINS PRIZES, NEW FRIENDS
It all started at the Lewis Ski Club picnic last July when I was elected this year's NASA Ski Queen. In
August, when it was too warm to think about skiing, I filled out the application for the CMSC Ski Queen
pageant. I had to "think snow" to answer questions about skiing and get a picture taken wearing a nice
warm wool sweater to send in with the application. I'm sure the other customers thought I was crazy.

In October, we all received a packet of information we needed to learn about CMSC and a list of ski terms
to study to prepare for the interviews. Most of the information was stuff I'd heard about CMSC or things I
do while skiing, but never called them by name. The night before the pageant at the Ski Fair, all thirteen
CMSC Ski Queen contestants met with the committee to find out the details of our day at the Ski Fair.
Everyone on the committee was wonderful and tried to make us all feel at ease and to prepare us for the
pageant. All of the contestants instantly developed a camaraderie and started helping each other prepare
for the interviews that were coming on Saturday.

The day of the pageant was a long one. In the morning, we started with a meeting to go over last minute
details and got the meet the panel of five judges. Throughout the afternoon, we each had an individual
interview with the panel of judges. I was the second person to be interviewed and was very nervous going
into the room to be "grilled", but the judges were all very nice and before I knew it, my time was up. I
spent the rest of the afternoon working in the CMSC booth, selling raffle tickets and talking to
representatives from some of the ski resorts.

In our first time on stage that evening, we modeled our outfits that we had borrowed from local ski shops. I
had a very nice outfit from Bavarian Village that I really wish I could have kept! We also introduced
ourselves and thanked the sponsors. Then the semi-finalists were announced. Unfortunately, competition
was tough and I wasn't one of them but I got to relax while those who were chosen had to answer questions
on-stage in front of the audience. During the second time on stage, there were several presentations,
including a speech by last year's CMSC Ski Queen (our own Kathy Schubert!), then the Queen and her
court were announced. Barb Miles from Warren Ski Club is this year's CMSC Ski Queen.

The day wasn't over yet! Then, we went into the "prize room" where everyone received a number of
wonderful prizes. I got a 5-day lift ticket to Sugarbush in Vermont and a couple of free passes to resorts in
Western New York. Everyone received memberships to four other ski clubs, invitations to events that
other ski clubs are having and some wonderful gifts from members of the committee and other sponsors.
Afterwards, we all went across the street to celebrate at the CMSC party. Those of us that weren't quite
ready to go home went to the Thirsty Parrot where Bavarian Village was sponsoring their own party.
Needless to say, I got home rather late! But, I had a great time.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I made several great friends with the other candidates. I want to
thank everyone in the Lewis Ski Club that came to the Ski Fair to support me. I am pleased to be this
year's NASA Ski Queen and will do my best to represent our ski club to CMSC. (Lisa Lambert)

                                   MEMBERSHIP CARDS ON WAY
Better later than never (?), this year’s membership cards are on their way. Some were issued with last
month’s newsletter, some handed out at the last meeting, some were mailed on site, and the remainder are
being mailed to off-site members who don’t get mailed newsletters. It may be a bit confusing, but one way
or another, all members should have their cards in hand by the time this newsletter reaches you. So what,
you say? Well, that’s a good question. You’re not “carded” at meetings or on trips, you can’t get a free lift
ticket anywhere, and they’re not firm enough to scrape ice and snow off your cars. But we do know that
the Bavarian Village ski shop will give you a 10% discount on non-sale merchandise if you present them
with the card, and we also believe that members like the handy reference to trip places and dates. What we
don’t know is whether members actually carry or use the cards (they’re more like small pamphlets, really)
as intended. Before issuing cards again, the Membership Committee will be assessing whether the
membership has a continuing need or desire for these cards. If you have an opinion, please voice it (at a
meeting, by phone, or by e-mail)!

                                      THE DOWNHILL “DOPE”
It looks like all those people who asked Santa for snow for Christmas must have been good little boys and
girls (especially those in Buffalo). If you recall at our last club meeting, a North Royalton weather expert,
after reading one Time magazine article, promised that snowy conditions were on the way. Up until
recently, the Arctic Oscillation was in a strong positive phase, with a swirling ring of wind keeping the cold
arctic air bottled up. However, our weather prognosticator promised that the Arctic Oscillation would
move into the negative phase before the end of December, and allow the arctic winds to come sweeping
down over the Great Lakes and dump snow just in time for our January ski trips. All of the ski resorts are
now open and reporting bases of a few inches up to 18 inches at Holiday Valley and 30 inches at Kissing
Bridge. I look forward to seeing all of you on the slopes! (Al Linne)

                                      THE NORDIC “SKINNY”
If you haven’t already signed up for the one-day bus trip up to the Art Roscoe ski area, you better hurry! It
is included in this newsletter. January 12th is SOON (yeah!) and Roger is doing a great job arranging a fun
day for all. Different this year is the group dinner included with the trip. The dinner selections are varied
and look quite yummy.

Please note a couple of additions to the schedule. They are the Telemark Festival on January 13th, and two
outings with a new cross-country skiing group from the Metroparks. I’m staying in touch with the ranger
who is running those outings and we’re trying to share information in order to provide the MOST cross-
country skiing possible for all of us. If you’re interested in participating in their outings on January 5th and
19th, please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with the right people.

The Poker Run signup is in the newsletter. Please sign up and enjoy the fun!
The Nordic Flurry Race on January 26th will be exciting and could be free - the ski club board has voted to
support the NORDIC RACERS just as they support the downhill racers! What does that mean? It means
that the club could pay for your race entry fee! We have up to $100 to pay for the fees of our racers. See
me for signup forms and the amount of sponsorship per person will be evenly divided based on the total
number of racers.

Telemark Festival…

Sponsored by Newman Outfitters on Sunday, January 13th, from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm at Boston Mills. No
advance registration required.
           Demos

Chapin Forest Info…

Many of our cross-country outings are scheduled for Lake County’s Chapin Forest Park. Directions to get
there are:
              Interstate 90 east to
              Route 91 south to
              Route 6 east to
Hobart Road to Chapin Forest Park

You can only make a LEFT turn onto Hobart (if you were heading east on Route 6) and then
Chapin is almost immediately on your right. (Sorry for the incorrect directions last month!) Chapin’s
phone number is (440) 256-2255.

The XC schedule is listed below. If any of you have ideas of what you’d like to add to the schedule or see
added to it, please call me at (216) 433-9370. (Linda Elonen-Wright)

Art Roscoe Nordic Adventure…

Forecast: Nordic Adventure to Art Roscoe January 12th, 2002 will be a big hit.

It is now officially Winter and my epidermic barometer tells me it is officially cold outside; cold enough
for the Alpine ski resorts to fire up their snow guns to help reclaim the lost revenues from the current ski
season.

As you are most likely aware, Art Roscoe Ski Touring Center doesn’t rely on those artificial snow
machines, but the original equipment supplied by Mother Nature. The recent heavy snowfall in Buffalo,
NY is the beginning of the wintry weather patterns that envelope western New York. Keep your fingers
crossed that those snow clouds will blanket Art Roscoe with fresh powder for our bus trip on Saturday the
twelfth.

Currently we have a half filled bus with many of you telling me you are planning to go. I plan to have a
waiting list for those procrastinators who wait too long to sign up. Help me fill those empty bus seats by
talking your friends and family into keeping those New Years’ resolutions of becoming more active, trying
new adventures, and getting in shape. (I personally need several of these bus trips to put a dent in the
calories I need to burn…).

The procrastinators’ fee has been pushed back one day to accommodate the folks at the January
membership meeting on the 8th. I will be present collecting the applications for the trip. Please form an
orderly line. (Roger “Dodger” Meredith)

                                          REGULAR MEETINGS

trustees are expected, trip coordinators are encouraged, and any member is welcomed, to attend. This
month’s meeting will be on Thursday, January 24th, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm, bldg 500, room 3109.

                          JANUARY CELESTIAL EVENTS (Birthdays)
This month will mark the completion of another 590 million-mile solar orbit for these folks (some of them
have GOT to be getting dizzy!)…

in Allegany State Park near Salamanca, New York

This BUS trip is brought to you by: NASA Lewis Ski Club, Inc.

                                              Saturday, January 12th, 2002

Early-bird Price (due by January 7th, 2002): $47.00 ($52.00 if you are drinking alcohol with dinner)
Procrastinator’s Price: Additional $5.00 Children (12 years and under): $5.00 dinner Discount.

This is a one-day Nordic ski-trip, with a snowshoe option, including meals (breakfast snack on bus, lunch at
the warming hut and a group banquet dinner in Olean). We will depart from NASA at 6:30 A.M., eastside pick-
up behind Dennys, on Wilson Mills Road, near I-271, NW corner of parking lot at 7:00 A.M. We should be back
at NASA around 11:00 p.m.

Ski area description: Art Roscoe Ski Area has 45 KM of tracked, groomed trail loops (over 25 miles) with trails ranked
in the traditional ski code. The code reads: green circle (easiest in THIS ski area), blue square (intermediate difficulty
trails) and black diamond (the most challenging trails at Art Roscoe Ski Area). Some trail loops allow skiers to travel both
clockwise and counter-clockwise, which changes the experience, creating an effect of a new trail. It is good practice to
warm up on the easier trails and advance to the more challenging trails as your personal abilities and experience allow.
Since all ski areas are rated only with respect to themselves, having skied a black diamond on one mountain might have no
relevance to the black diamonds of this ski area. Ski conditions at Allegany state park: (716) 354-9163

Note: This is the third year we will run this trip, and in the past, we have always have beginner XC skiers as well as
the most advanced, and everyone has had plenty of trails to ski.

Package includes: Round-trip transportation from Cleveland to Allegany State Park, to Olean for dinner and back to
Cleveland. We will also provide breakfast pastry on the bus and a light lunch at the warming hut. Equipment rentals are
extra, rates given below. We should arrive in Allegany State Park between 10 and 10:30 a.m., ski groomed trails (or
snowshoe) all day, stopping at the warming hut for hot food and/or picnic lunches at your schedule. We will be leaving
the ski area at 5:00 to go to Olean. Depart for home at 7:30 and arrive at NASA around 11:00 p.m. There are seven
banquet menu choices that you will need to select from (two vegetarian, two pastas, two chicken and one fish.) If you
are over 21 years old and want alcohol with dinner, that’s available as well. Children 12 years old and younger will be
discounted $5.00 from the cost of the banquet.

RENTALS for the day are available as follows:
XC Skis with Solomon SNS bindings and Solomon ski boots.
     Package: $13.00, Separately: skis-$8.00, boots-$5.00, poles- $3.00

                                           Saturday, February 16th.
                                            From 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.

Attention all skiers! This fun filled night of cross-country skiing, good food and poker can be yours! The
Lewis Ski Club will be hosting its Poker Run 2002 at Chapin Forest. Chapin is groomed for both classic
and skate style Nordic skiing. Rental equipment is NOT included in the price, but don’t worry, this is
cross-country skiing – rentals are cheap!

The cost is a mere $20.00 in advance, and for you real gamblers who might wait until the actual day to
make sure there’s snow, it’ll cost ya’ $25.00, that is if there are any spots left. Non-poker players can ski
and enjoy the food and beverages for $10.00. A fine dinner of sloppy joes, appropriate side dishes, dessert
and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. Cool/neat/desirable prizes will be awarded in the Pine Lodge
beginning at 8:00 p.m.

As the sage once said:

Expect snow and sign up ASAP, don't get left on the porch holding the jokers.

The poker rules will be distributed to all participants prior to the start.

The lodge is located on U.S. Route 6 and Hobart Road. If the weather does not permit XC skiing on
February 16th, you will get a full refund. No other refunds will be granted.

The Winter Sports Hotline for Chapin Forest area is 440-256-2255.
