                                                                                                          897-1801 ext.613) with any questions they may have. All

                                                                                                          help our drivers become comfortable with the changes.
                                                                                                             The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
                                                                                                          Administration) is also addressing unforeseen questions
                                                                                                          as they arise. They have issued a recent memo to clarify
                                                                                                          calculation of the 14-hour rule following 2 qualified
                                                                                                          sleeper-berth periods, combining sleeper-berth and off-
                                                                                                          duty time, use of the 34-hour restart and the length of
                                                                                                          out-of-service time required when a driver has violated
                                                                                                          the 11 or 14 hour rule. We are sure to see other clarifi-
                                                                                                          cations as the year progresses.

                                                                                                         ing this past year? In a nut-
                                                                                                         shell we have done and are
                                                                                                         doing the following:
                                                                                                            Process improvement-
                                                                                                         Finding the best ways to
                                                                                                         inspect and identify equip-
                                                                                                         ment problems, and then
                                                                                                         repair them.

                                                                                                         Our mechanics will be judged on their work.
                                                                                                            Repair efficiency-Our repairs must be completed in
                                                                                                         a timely manner. Again, our mechanics will be judged
                                                                                                         based upon their efficiencies.
                                                                                                            Reduce road repair-By improving our quality and
                                                                                                         quantity of repairs at our facilities, we have improved
                                                                                                         our inspection process at the Fuel Center. We also are in
                                                                                                         the process of improving real time information to the
                                                                                                         other shops on repairs needed.
                                                                                                            Our tire inspections have made a big improvement in
                                                                                                         over the road repairs compared to last year.
                                                                                                            In the shops we have had and will continue to pro-
                                                                                                         mote training. We have a skill level training program
                                                                                                         that gives rewards for those who learn their trade well.
                                                                                                         As this program is improved our employees will have
                                                                                                         the training and skills necessary to do what is required
                                                                                                         of them. Along with this training, our mechanics are
                                                                                                         given performance reviews monthly, graded by estab-
                                                                                                         lished job standards for quality and efficiency.
                                                                                                            As we strive to improve our performance, it is very
                                                                                                         important to us in Maintenance that the drivers, our
                                                                                                         valued customers, feel confident about our repairs and
                                                                                                         feel respected as individuals.
                                                                                                            Working and striving to help one another do our best
                                                                                                         is key to C.R. England remaining an industry leader.
