From the desk visit the Soviet Union as a “tourist”. Wouldn’t
it be a great B’nai Mitzvah project if we could
of Rabbi Kathy... do the same for some teenager in a country
that will not allow communities their religious
                                                   freedom?

The second connection of Chanukah and
Pesach is that they are like “bookends” for the
seasons. At Chanukah it is getting dark early.
We appreciate the candle lights are they chase
away the darkness. The trees are asleep for the
winter and we hunker down for a cold few
months. At Pesach it is getting lighter earlier.
What do Chanukah and Pesach have in Everything in nature is waking up. We are
common? Certainly, not the food. Certainly, ready to greet the warm spring. We open the
not the time of the year. Certainly, not the windows and welcome the renewal of life. We
home preparation. Certainly, not the impact on even fell freer and lighter after all the cold and
the local shopping. (Also know as part of the layers of clothing that Chanukah time brings.

recognize that, as our prayer book states,
“Until all are free, none are free”. I can
remember a time when we, in the American
Jewish community, supported the Jews of the
Soviet Union that were not free to practice
their Judaism. Our B’nai Mitzvah kids were
“twinned” with kids in the Soviet Union who
were not allowed to study for their B’nai

the Shabbat morning service. We send tallit

having a meeting before services to seek

                                                Please attend this meeting. C’mon

our members on PARTICIPATION. By
that I mean not only coming to services on Shalom,
Friday nights, but taking part in our other Arthur Rosen
programs as well. Next Saturday, Dec.
15th is our annual Chanukah party. You all
have heard that Temple finances are not
up to par due to a fall off in Bingo revenue,
however we don’t want to discontinue all
the activities that make us what we are.
We made the decision to scale back the
cost of this annual party by not catering
through Zan’s, as we did the last few
years. Instead we asked each family who
is coming to bring some hors d’ oeuvres or
a fruit or veggie platter or some type of
"finger food" and the Temple would supply
soft beverages and wine, plus dessert.
We still hired a disc jockey to keep us
singing and dancing all night and due to
requests by some members we also
decided to not limit the party to adults
only. You can bring your kids if you want
or arrange for babysitting through the
youth group.

As of today, I have only heard from 5
couples (including Linda and me). We
need much better response in order to
                                                                                        6
SISTERHOOD NEWS

Our Chinese Auction was an amazing
success this year. We went above and
beyond our expectations of profit.

So many people helped in providing the
items for the Chinese Auction, the set up,
keeping things organized during the
auction, the clean up, etc. We really
appreciate all that our Temple family
does, especially at a hectic time as the
Chinese Auction. This fund raiser will
surely help keep our Temple doors open a
little longer.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Mastic Beach Hebrew Center Sisterhood
