    Real world            Students will learn how destroying natural resources can affect the Earth and how it

 Lesson Description
 This lesson concentrates on helping students understand how people and things can harm by reading "The
 Lorax" by Dr. Seuss. The students will be taught how they can help the earth by recycling common household
 items. The students will understand the meaning of reduce, recycle, reuse, and the cause and effects pollution
 has on the planet. The students will categorize items as being able to be reduced, recycled, or reused. The
 students will be able to give examples of items that can be reduced, recycled, or reused.
 Content Area Standards Alignment
 (11) Citizenship. The student understands the impact of individual and group decisions on communities in a
 democratic society. The student is expected to:
         (B) identify examples of actions individuals and groups can take to improve the community
 (8) Science concepts. The student knows that living organisms need food, water, light, air, a way to dispose of
 waste, and an environment in which to live. The student is expected to:

Assessment
The teacher will check for understanding by walking around during the independent practice time and listen to
what the groups are discussing and how they are categorizing the items on their tables. If the students are
getting confused with the vocabulary, the teacher can explain it again and give more examples so the students
will understand the terms and what they mean.

Potential Challenges/Plan B
If the students finish the record sheet quickly and there is time left, the teacher will ask the students to come up
with a poster to motivate people to recycle items instead of throwing them in the trash. Each table could come
up with a motivational poster that states why it is important to recycle and how it helps the environment. The
students could also decorate the posters and hang them outside the classroom.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
                       There is a student that uses crutches, so she will need to have plenty of space on the carpet
