CLASS SUMMARY

The Research Technologist I works under general supervision and is responsible for performing
and analyzing tests in a research laboratory. This position is governed by laboratory principles
and institution policy.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

1.     Prepares chemicals and calibrates laboratory and test equipment to be used in
       experiments.

2.     Obtains test sample through surgery or dissection of animals and/or interviewing
       patients or participants in project.

3.     Refines test sample using procedures such as dehydration, dilution, embedding,
       sectioning, centrifuging, or other test means.

4.     Compiles results of tests by observation, statistical computation, or preparation of
       photographs and slide.

5.     Prepares report on analysis of tests and presents to supervisor along with
       recommendations on modifications of procedures.

6.     Maintains files on research experiments for later reference.

7.     Researches journals and papers for new experiment procedures and adjusts procedures
       to laboratory as necessary.

8.     Provides maintenance and care of laboratory equipment and test animals.

9.     Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Research Technologist I has occasional contact with other employees to exchange
information and/or patients or participants in research projects to obtain information.

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS

Work requires frequent exposure to laboratory chemicals.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of research science.
Knowledge of laboratory methods, techniques and procedures.
Ability to prepare laboratory and animals for research experiments.
Ability to perform research experiments, and compile and analyze results.
Ability to interpret new laboratory method and procedures.
Ability to provide maintenance and care of laboratory and test animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry, biology,
physics or related field; plus one year of experience in a research laboratory.

Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic
requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee.
