THE VICEGERENTAL MIND: WHAT IS IT?




It is self evident that AL-Qu’rÉn aspires towards building a vicegerent on earth. This central objective is clearly spelled out in the following verse: (And when thy Lord said to the angels, `I am about to place a vicegerent in the earth,' they said `Wilt THOU place therein such as will cause disorder in it, and shed blood? - and we glorify THEE with THY praise and extol THY holiness,' HE answered, `I know what you know not.) [2: 31].

THE VICEGERENTAL MIND: WHAT IS IT?


For Al-Qur’an to build this type of personality and man, the starting point is building the mind that can understand, commit, realize, live and bear the responsibility of a vicegerent. To build this vicegerental mind, al-Qur’an considers knowledge as the back bone of the entire process. The holy Qur’an declares that:

THE VICEGERENTAL MIND: WHAT IS IT?
(And HE taught Adam all the names, then HE put the objects of these names before the angles and said, `Tell ME the names of these, if you are right,' (32). They said, `Holy art THOU! No knowledge have we except what THOU hast taught us; surely THOU art All-Knowing, the Wise.(33) HE said `O Adam, tell them their names;' and when he had told them their names, HE said `Did I not say to you, I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you hide?) [2: 32-34].

THE VICEGERENTAL MIND: WHAT IS IT?






It is a mind whose vision, approach, understanding, thoughts and actions are moulded and guided by the Quranic worldview. It is a mind that acknowledges the unity of God as the cardinal principle of his vision of life and existence. It is a mind that absorbs and internalizes the trust of Allah and realized fully his place and role in the Universe as a vicegerent of God. It is a Civilizational and ‘UmrÉnic mind in the sense that building a balanced civilization and tamadun that reflects the Unity of God is its main objective in this world.

THE VICEGERENTAL MIND: WHAT IS IT?
