"TARRANT COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH HEALTH ADVISORY"
TARRANT COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH Division of Epidemiology and Health Information Lou Brewer, RN, MPH Sandra K. Parker, MD Director Health Authority/Medical Director From: Anita Kurian, DrPH, MBBS Phone: (817) 994 3708 Chief Epidemiologist and Division Manager To: Tarrant County Medical Care Providers Date: Updated June 15, 2009 HEALTH ADVISORY: NOVEL INFLUENZA A H1N1 TESTING GUIDELINES AND RESPIRATORY VIRUS SURVEILLANCE As the novel influenza A H1N1 virus is widespread in our community, the Tarrant County Public Health respiratory virus surveillance program will transition from reference and diagnostic testing which was instituted as a result of an emergency situation to traditional surveillance. With the assistance of our community partners currently participating in surveillance, Tarrant County Public Health will continue to monitor the distribution of both novel H1N1 and seasonal influenza viruses as well as other respiratory viruses (RSV, human parainfluenza 1-3, metapneumovirus and adenovirus). In particular, our traditional surveillance program will continue to detect any new virus variants and assist in outbreak investigations. Tarrant County Public Health will no longer be conducting investigations of all novel influenza A H1N1 (swine-like flu) cases. In order to continue monitoring the evolution of the novel influenza A H1N1 virus, investigations will still be conducted on ALL hospitalized patients and any influenza related deaths. Regardless of surveillance enrollment status, providers should continue to submit specimens for all hospitalized patients and influenza related deaths. The Tarrant County Public Health Influenza Surveillance program will resume accepting specimens from all patients presenting with influenza like illness (ILI) defined as fever of 100 F or greater with a cough or a sore throat from currently enrolled surveillance participants. If your facility is not currently participating in the Tarrant County Respiratory Virus Surveillance program and would like to participate, please contact Barbara Vassell (817) 321-5321 or firstname.lastname@example.org . If your facility is in need of viral transport media or needs to schedule for a specimen pick up, please contact Tami Sanchez at (817) 321-5328.
