HIV/AIDS Cases Reported During the Fourth Quarter of 2002
During the fourth quarter of this year, a total of 158 cases were investigated and added to the Tarrant County HIV/AIDS Surveillance Registry. Of this total, there were 42 confirmed AIDS cases, 102 HIV seropositive cases, 14 perinatal HIV exposures cases, and an additional 71 cases from residences outside of Tarrant County. This brings the cumulative Tarrant County total since 1982 to 3,475 AIDS cases. One thousand six local seropositive cases have been confirmed since the January 1999 initiation of HIV-name reporting in Texas. There were 15 death updates reported during the fourth quarter. The number of known Tarrant County HIV/AIDS-associated deaths during the cumulative surveillance period (January 1982 through December 2002) was 1,860. This represents a case fatality rate of 42 percent. The corresponding statistics for Texas through December 2002 revealed a total of 75,315 HIV/AIDS cases (33,352 deaths) for a case fatality rate of 44 percent. Through December 2001, the United States and territories reported a total of 816,149 AIDS cases (467,910 deaths) for a case fatality rate of 57 percent.
