BBC Extend Scheme - providing work placements for disabled people EXTEND for 2005/2006 is undergoing a re-formatting process. At the moment the BBC cannot confirm how the scheme will operate for 2006. Extend, is a BBC-wide work placement scheme which offers appropriately qualified disabled people a great opportunity to gain a paid work placement within the BBC. The principal aim of the Extend programme is to enable talented people with disabilities to gain real work experience and to improve their opportunities of securing future employment within the media industry. Extend does not necessarily lead to a full time job but over two-thirds of those who have been on the Scheme have got further work at the BBC. Extend placements can be in London or at many of our other locations nationwide. Last year Extend offered over 40 placements within both programme-making areas (which included Assistant Broadcast Journalists, Researchers, Production Assistants, Assistant Studio Camera/Sound operator and online jobs in New Media) and programme-support areas (including Rights Assistants, Media Assistants and many more). If you are interested to know more about EXTEND, the BBC will be posting more information about further developments of the scheme in the coming months on their website. Your Careers Drop-in - What to Expect Career planning is a process and your interview with a Careers Adviser is only part of this process. More than one interview may be required to steer you through the different stages of career planning. A confidential duty interview will last for approximately 15 minutes and the Careers Adviser will agree with you which issues you want to discuss at that session. If they feel a longer interview is required, they will make an appointment for you. Your interview may include: - Where to start Discussing your preferences, skills, strengths, weaknesses, values etc. Exploring the range of options open to you Helping you help yourself e.g. by directing you to relevant sources of information or suggesting action to take Talking about and reflecting upon your course Advice about CVs, covering letters, application forms, interviews and assessment centres including ways to improve your applications Explaining different job hunting techniques Reviewing your job choice Your Careers Adviser will not: - Tell you what to do. We offer impartial advice, guidance and information but all career decisions must be your own. Recite large amounts of information. Private research in the information room is a vital part of the planning process. Write application forms, letters or CVs for you, or provide a proofreading service. Directly approach employers on your behalf. Give legal advice or counselling on personal matters. We are happy to refer you to other appropriate services when necessary.
