Transferring to The University of New Mexico from San Juan College
                                      (2008-2009 Catalog)

                                                           Revised 10/22/2008
The University of New Mexico and San Juan College work closely to ease your transition from SJC to UNM. This
information is provided to assist you in planning a transfer program.

Satisfactory completion (Grade of “CR”) in ENGL 095, 099, 108, 109 and MATH 096 and RDGN 113 will satisfy UNM
Introductory Studies requirements. These hours will not, however, transfer nor be counted toward any degree program
because they are college-preparatory courses.

While UNM does not ordinarily transfer technical or occupational coursework, the College of Education developed a
Baccalaureate Degree program in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies for students who have earned
an Associate of Applied Science degree in certain fields. The program, which provides quality education for individuals
interested in improving the learning experiences of adults in corporate settings, allows a maximum transfer of credits from
approved technical disciplines in community colleges and post-secondary technical institutes. For additional information,
contact 277-4131 or 277-4132.

For the most current transfer information this guide is available on-line and updated as necessary; check the
UNM website: www.unm.edu, click on “Future Students” and follow the links to “How to Transfer to UNM.”

Unless otherwise indicated, the following courses, with a minimum grade of “D”, are fully transferable to
UNM. Some classes must be completed with a “C” or better in order to fulfill prerequisite or degree
requirements. Please note that course transferability does not ensure meeting specific degree requirements.
Where applicable, courses are cross-listed with their UNM equivalents. In most situations where more
than one course is required to meet the UNM equivalent, the excess hours will be applied to general
university electives. If there is no equivalent UNM course number listed, the class may or may not be
applied toward core requirements or as elective credit in a degree program.

SJC courses that list The University of New Mexico equivalencies have been approved by the
departments offering the respective courses at UNM. Transfer courses that do not list UNM
equivalencies may or may not satisfy specific degree requirements. You must check with department,
college, or school advisors at UNM to see if these courses apply to your degree program.
The provisions of this transfer guide are not to be regarded as an irrevocable contract between the student and the University.
The University reserves the right to change any provisions or requirements at any time.

 Biology
The Department of Biology at UNM has recently revised its introductory sequence for Biology Majors. BIOL 121L,
122L, 219 and 221 have been phased out and a new sequence of courses is in effect. The new courses are BIOL 201
(Molecular and Cell Biology), BIOL 202 (Genetics), BIOL 203L (Ecology and Evolution) and BIOL 204L (Plant and
Animal Form and Function). Students who take courses equivalent to the old curriculum will still receive Biology credit at
UNM. If the equivalent of the old curriculum is completed by June 2005, no additional introductory courses will be
required. If courses equivalent to all or part of the old curriculum are completed after June 2005, credit will be given, but
some additional introductory courses will also be required. For further information, please contact the Department of
Biology at 277-4392.
