					General Measures - adequate nutrition - Vit. B supplimentation(sp. Thiamine 50-100 mg/d) - good psychological & social support Mild to Mod. Withdrawal - Barbiturates/Benzodiazipines(most used) - Benzodiazipines: short-acting – Lorazepam(caution) : long-acting – Chlordiazipoxide - Diazepam

 anxiety, insomnia & mild autonomic over activity may

persist for a period of 2-6 months after acute withdrawal has subsided.  Acamprostate may help reduce the symptoms  Cognitive & Behavioural therapy may help more than drugs

Finally, - LEARN to recognise symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and BE ABLE TO differentiate withdrawal from deterioration of neurosurgical patients(sp. RTA and other trauma cases which has more prevalence among the alcoholics) - DO NOT FORGET to give vit. B-complex (sp. Thiamine) in trauma cases who are chronic alcoholics. - REMEMBER “Benzodiazepines” and their dosing protocol in alcohol withdrawal - Anticonvulsants are of no use in withdrawal seizures
