Electric Vehicle (EV) as soon as early next year.
Although the market is heating up, motorcycles
will still be the first EV to be sold officially in
Two parties have been heavily promoting their
EV models, Modenas its C-Tric model and Eclimo
its Penan scooter.
The C-Tric is based on the Modenas CT110, a
petrol engine kapchai which is the brand’s entry
With five gel-type lead-acid batteries stashed
where the petrol engine used to reside, Modenas
believes in order to get Malaysians used to the
new technology, it should be cheap enough for
the majority of the people.
The C-Tric is targeted to be priced below
RM5,000. The batteries provide juice for a distance
of 65km at an average speed of 55km/h.
Charging time is three hours but according
to our experience using it for three days at the
COTY2U CARnival, none of the 10 C-Tric bikes
The C-Tric felt quick and was nimble, but
throttle actuation was far from linear, making it
nearly impossible to cruise at very low speed.
“It’s like there were spikes in the throttle
input graph,” said CBT and Berita Harian Auto
contributor Salihin Abd Rahim.
However so, some of the bikes behaved well.
Modenas informed us that some of the bikes
were still under development.
The batteries can last for two years and the
replacement is around RM800.
Next is the Eclimo Penan, an electric scooter
that gets its power from a rechargeable lithium-
ion polymer battery pack.
According to its corporate and commerical
advisor, Datuk Davy Woo, the Eclimo Penan is a
truly Malaysian electric scooter as the battery and
motor technologies are owned by the company
and its associates.
“Both components are produced in Malaysia,”
The Malaysian scooter will be assembled by
Naza Bikes in Shah Alam and it has a travel range
of between 100 and 120km at an average speed
of 50km/h. Claimed top speed is at 110km/h.
Eclimo plans to price it slightly below RM10,000
but a repayment scheme of below RM200 per
month for five years will be offered.
The lithium-ion polymer battery is said to have
a life span of about 100,000km.
“Full charge needs three and a half hour,” said
company director K.B. Woo.
Eclimo has yet to provide CBT with a test unit.
From the basic perspective, Modenas seems to
have an easier job of marketing the concept as
their C-Tric is definitely within the grasp of many
RM5,000 is definitely kapchai’s market and
this will allow more Malaysians to buy it as an
“experiment” to have a full EV at home.
But at RM800 for every two years, the owner
will have to make sure his two-year mileage is
worth more than a RM800 fuel bill.
As for the Eclimo, the scooter market has one
of the shortest product cycle time compared with
the motorcycles or cars.
At RM10,000, that is already an executive
level budget spending. The Penan E-Scooter will
receive stiff competition from its petrol sipping
brothers – Modenas New Elegan and the SYM
These are scooters which are highly in demand
as they offer space and also long-distance
commuting, something that the Penan might not
be able to give.
“At RM10,000, that is a big risk for something
that has yet to be proven,” said a vice president of
a stockbroking firm who parks his cars at home
and rides an SYM200 to his office everyday.
We think these two work in tandem – Modenas
makes it affordable for all to buy, while Eclimo will
show how advanced the EV technology is now.
Let’s hope the government will speed up the
process of having these EVs road legal.
