I can tell its summer. So much to do and so little time to do it. July was a hectic
month full of CCM activities. Thanks to everyone who helped make our July 4 event at
Waterford an ongoing success. It’s a tradition that we are proud of, hence the name, Ken
Watson/Gary Griffith Memorial Time Trial.
I cannot tell its summer by the weather and I am not complaining about the lack
of evidence of global warming.
August will be activity laden also, especially for we who are going to the NCCC
Convention. If you missed it that’s a shame. It’s another Corvette tradition, being the 50th
Anniversary convention that will be (as I type this) a huge part of the Corvette Fun
experience. Don’t miss the August membership meeting. Joe Scafero will have a
comprehensive Convention recap that evening. At the October meeting Pratt & Miller are
scheduled to have the new GT2 racer, based on the ZR1, there after it’s introductory
race at Mid Ohio. I hear that it makes the old GT1 racer look like the Flintstone’s ride.
Gee, I wonder if they will sell those Flintstone cars cheap.
We are in process of recapping the 2008 Corvette Encounter. First observation is
that we are disappointed in the participation and attendance. We are brainstorming ideas
for 2010 and welcome your thoughts for improvements. It will be June 5. That is the only
thing that is firm at this point. Any and all options are on the table to make this a
successful event and the more ideas on the table, the better. Offering an idea does not
make you an automatic volunteer so don’t be bashful.
Kerry is doing a heroic job planning a wide variety of social events to keep CCM
a one club fits all Corvette owners’ Fun cravings. Please look closely at these events
and spread the word to other Corvette enthusiasts to join us. The more the merrier.
Don’t miss the annual club picnic. This year it happens to be on a SATURDAY,
August 22. There are activities planned for the whole family. All we ask is that you bring
a passing dish. Oh, just in case you didn’t hear Jim Rees ask the question, yes, please
bring a dish containing food. Let’s have some FUN!

And now a note from our sponsor, Les Stanford Chevrolet.
Effective August 1st, Gary Claudio will become the main contact
between CCM and Les Stanford Chevrolet-Cadillac. Gary will handle all
Sales, Service, Parts, Body Shop and Customer Relations issues. He may be reached
via his cell phone at: 248 807-8061 or email at: gman3081@comcast.net This change
was made to allow Chris Warren time to focus on additional assignments within the Les
Stanford organization. Chris will still be available to attend CCM meetings as his
schedule permits.
On a personal note, I want to thanks Chris for many years of service to the club
and am glad that he will still be available to us. We also welcome Gary’s increased
involvement as not only a CCM Board member but now as liaison to Les Stanford for
any needs you might have.

                                                                                     Bruce

CCM Membership Update – August 2009
Our membership has again increased over the past month. This month we welcome
John and Karen Phillips of Temperance, MI. Some of you may have competed against
them, as they have already participated in a couple of autocross events. They bring with
them a 2008 Z06. Welcome John & Karen.
With the addition of the Phillips’ that brings the total club membership to 281 and that
brings me to my next subject. Believe it or not membership renewals for 2010 will be
going out in the middle of next month (September). On the renewal post cards along
with your dues information I will be requesting you update any changes to your email,
address, phone number, birth date, etc. Please make sure this information is correct
and current. Especially your email address, as this is how the club communicates with
you. Also a new membership directory will be printed early in 2010. Normally we lose
members when renewal time rolls around. However the Board and I would really like to
see a 100% renewal! Dues must be submitted by October 31st to avoid the additional
late fee. So please get those back to me in mail as soon as you can, I really appreciate
it. I will also be asking for information on what your current Corvette(s) are. I will be
compiling a report of what Corvettes the club members own. I know one thing for sure
already – we have a lot of Z06’s in the club!
Early in July, I entered the Corvette Legends Club, show at the Summit in Canton, MI.
Now the Summit is a nice venue, with a large grassy park that surrounds a nice man-
made lake. Also the perfect spot to park and display your Corvette for a car show.
Much like our own Corvette Encounter it rained during the morning of the show!
However it did clear up and got nice and hot and muggy. I’m very proud to say that I
brought home three awards from the show. The one thing that was different from our
show was that 97 owners and their Corvettes were in attendance. Despite the humid
weather I believe all enjoyed themselves. The Michigan avenue cruise was also that
day. Upon conclusion of the show, several of the Corvettes entered lined up and then
cruised Michigan Ave. together into Dearborn and then up Telegraph to a restaurant in
Redford.
There are still several things coming up on the schedule for both social and competition
events. Be sure to check your emails for updates, and the event calendars. Always
remember; stay informed and stay involved.

                            Competition Report-August 2009

Greetings CCM Competitors,

I guess I have been slackin’ a bit lately. No report for July and I almost missed this one
too. We are coming off a busy stretch of four events in the last two months. The
highlight for me was our July 4th Waterford Hills Time Trials, great event Bruce and
Mary. Even though I had problems getting into third gear, and keeping it there, and my
left rear shock was disconnected, this is still the most fun event of the year in my
opinion. Having four runs was great, one more chance to blow the sound meter! Or,
one last chance to screw up another run! We had 88 drivers come out, and the weather
was great. See results in this issue.

Also in July CCM hosted its second 7-NCCC event autocross. Thanks to Fred King and
“The Slush-Man” Rodney Slusher for coming out on Saturday to help me set up the
course, so that we could get rolling as close to on-time as possible on Sunday. I think
most enjoyed the course; me, maybe not so much! But it was still a great event and one
of the smoothest running NCCC event we’ve had. Attendance was down from our June
event however. Thanks to my co-chair, Alan Johnson, and to everyone else who came
out to run and work that day. Again, results are in this issue.

On August 1st, bracket drag racing will find its way back to the CCM competition program
as we head out to Lapeer Dragway. Fred King will be the event chair. We will not be
the only ones at the track so please arrive in time to make plenty of practice runs. See
the event flyer for many details. Also, Fred has pointed out that if it is raining in the
Detroit area to call the track; it may not be raining up there.

Coming up later in August, we have three competition events in one weekend on the
22nd and 23rd. On Saturday CCM will have its annual Concours d’Elegance held in
conjunction with our Club Picnic at Maybury. We will also be hosting an NCCC People’s
Choice Show the same day; these are separate events with separate entry fees, with
only the Concours counting for CCM points. But, think about signing up for both to help
the Club’s Region points. The good news is, that you do not necessarily have to clean
your car for the PC show, people just have to like it! (Ted Godett if you put your car in
the PC show I will vote for it!) Please look for flyers for detail of both shows in this issue;
there are separate flyers for each.

Then on Sunday, we will have an opportunity to get your clean car dirty once again with
a DCSCC Champ series autocross at Poletown. Look for the flyer in this issue.

Dear Corvette Club of Michigan Enthusiast:

There will be Corvette Caravans from all fifty states converging on Bowling Green, KY in September of
2009 for the National Corvette Museum’s 15th Anniversary and Re-Grand Opening.

While it’s just a few weeks away, the planning for this event continues. As your club’s ambassador, I am
excited to advise, that I will be the Caravan Captain for the state of Michigan.

The caravan will depart from the Pratt and Miller Engineering facility in New Hudson, MI, at 9:30 A.M. on
Wednesday, September 2, 2009.

We will travel south into Indiana where our destination for the first day will be the Indianapolis, Indiana.
On the second day of the caravan, participants have the option of either taking a tour of the IMS Museum
or taking a parade lap on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The cost for the tour will be $3.00 per adult,
$1.00 for children, five to sixteen, and free for children under five. The cost of the parade lap is $10.00.

The primary hotel for the Indianapolis stop over will be the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel (317) 243-8310,
which is located at 5797 Rockville Road. The secondary hotel is the Micro Tel Inn, which is just down the
street on Rockville Road, (317) 381-6594, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rooms are blocked under the name,
Michigan Caravan

After the parade lap is complete, the caravan, we will depart Indianapolis and the caravan will experience
a scenic drive through Indiana on our way to Bowling Green, Kentucky, but we will stop and have lunch
with the Indiana and Kentucky caravans in the State of Kentucky. We should arrive in Bowling Green by
mid afternoon on Thursday, September 3, 2009.

This Anniversary event will run from September 3-6th, 2009.

In seeking hotel accommodations for your stay in Bowling Green please contact the Bowling Green Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau for assistance. They can be reached at (800) 326-7465 or visit their
website at: www.VisitBGKY.com/caravan for up to date information on available hotels.

Planning for this event continues but I hope to make this a very memorable driving event for all of those
who enjoy the Corvette experience.

I can be reached at MI_CaravanCapt09@comcast.net or by phone at (517) 749-2754.

Sincerely,

There is no report from me this month….

Instead of a report I have opted to re-run an article I wrote and published in the
January issue as a dedication to my grandmother who recently passed away.

The article is toward the end of this issue and is called “Granny’s run to 100”

See everybody at the next autocross event, drags, or cruise night.

Corvette claims overall victory at Spa 24 Hours

The 24 Hours Belgian endurance race is won by the Dutch-Belgian entered C6R of PK
Carsport. Drivers Mike Hezemans and Anthony Kumpen as well as Jos Menten and
Kurt Mollekens battled against the Maseratis. After 18 hours of close racing, the top
three GT1s were still within 10 seconds of eachother.

Due to mechanical problems including gearbox and accidents, the Maseratis fell
down the order. This gave the Corvettes around a 16 lap lead. In hour 22, SRT
Corvette hit problems with an problems with an oil leak and dropped several laps
down from the PK Carsport Corvette.

This win marks Corvettes second win at the Spa 24 Hours and is a great
        achievement against the dominant Maseratis.

Full summary will follow in the middle of the week.

Dear Friends,

Running is a sport that we all enjoy (ok, at least most of the time) and it has many physical benefits. We have participated in many
running races over the years from 5k’s to marathons to trail adventures. On this occasion, we are excited to pool our efforts and
resources and run a race for a very important cause.

Our team, Dave’s Muckdogs, as listed above, has chosen to each run the Brooksie Way Half
Marathon at Oakland University in Oakland County, MI scheduled for October 4, 2009. We
are committed to training from now until then, building endurance to finish the run successfully.
We are running in support of our honored friend, Dave Kuhnle, who is on a journey fighting against Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He
was a healthy 52 year old when he started experiencing shortness
of breath and night sweats. Dave was diagnosed in the fall of 2008 and has undergone chemotherapy
every other week for 26 weeks. He will be starting radiation treatments 5 days a week for 5 weeks.

Dave has done well in his treatments so far. He has not lost all of his hair, although he still suffers from exhaustion, especially
following his chemo treatments. However, he doesn’t let that stop him from trying to participate in simple church activities and
spending time with his family, when he is physically able to do so. We want to support Dave in any way that we can and thought this
run would be a great way to honor him and others in their fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma. We are hoping that you agree.

For more than 20 years, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training (TNT) program has been unparalleled in training
people from first timers to seasoned athletes to achieve their best. TNT is the world’s first, best and largest charity sports training
program. The LLS is celebrating 60 years of helping blood cancer patients live better, longer lives. The Society is the world’s largest
voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

If you would like to help, first and foremost, please continue to pray for Dave and his family. Pray for continued strength for all.
Secondly, if you would like to be a part of our team and give financially, please consider giving to the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. 75% of all funds raised go directly towards the Society's mission, "To cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease and
myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families”.

You can help in the fight against leukemia and lymphoma and other blood cancers by sending a donation (100% tax deductible) to
46140 Winston Dr., Shelby Township, MI 48315 or by donating on our website: http://mi.lls.llsevent.org/davesmuckdogs . Our
team’s fundraising goal is $5,000.

Thanks in advance for your support! We appreciate it so much!!

Sincerely,

Dave’s Muckdogs

*Please make checks payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and send them to the address above no later than September
15, 2009. Your donation is 100% tax deductible.

Isaiah 40:31- But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.

A true story by Rodney Slusher

In June 2008, Linda and I planned a vacation to Kentucky, with a 2-fold purpose that
included the NCM Experience. Since we took delivery of our car at Les Stanford, the
museum Experience program was the closest to museum delivery we could get.
The 2nd reason for the vacation was to visit my relatives in Kentucky. All my relatives
live in the state, most of them live in the same county…and some in the same house they
grew up in!!
My grandma is 85 years old and has an extremely contagious cackle-like laugh. She still
gets excited any time we say we’re coming to visit which, admittedly, is less often than it
should be . When I told her we were coming with our new Corvette, she was very
excited, even though I’m not entirely sure she knows what a Corvette is.
If any of you have ever seen the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter” then you’ve got a visual
of how she lives. Her house is built in the side of a mountain about 2 miles off the main
road in the “Holler”. A “Holler” is actually the valley between 2 mountains. When I told
Linda she lives in the side of the mountain, not surprisingly she thought I was
embellishing, then we pulled up the driveway, she looked at me and said, “she lives in the
mountain!”
For the next part of this story you need to imagine a thick & heavy accent (Dolly Parton
like). The next morning after breakfast Grandma asked me “are you gonna take me for a
ride in your pretty blue car?” “Of course Grandma” I said. I helped her in and, on the
ride out of the “holler” she wanted me to pull over in front of several of her friends house
so she could “show off”. Surprisingly they weren’t home. (most of these people never
leave the house).
When we got onto the main road which, is the kind of road the Corvette eats for
lunch…nice & twisty with decent straights between the turns, I stood on it in a
straightaway, ran it up to 100 and left it there for a few…Grandma asked “Rodney, how
fast we goin?” I said “a hundred Grandma”. She let out a giant cackle and said “WOO-
HOO! I ain’t never gone that fast before!” I laughed so hard I thought I was going to
crash.
Fast forward to Christmas day when I called her. My aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews
still spend the day with her (they live in the “holler” too).
Grandma said that during dinner “I told all them youngin’s about your pretty blue car and
that I thought for sure we were gonna fly. Just take right off and fly through the air”.
When I was about to hang up she said “You & Linda come visit me in the summer and
bring your pretty blue car”.
At 85 years old, I think the Corvette bug has bitten her and, as we all know it carries a
very contagious disease.

Over the past year, family and friends of Ken Watson have honored his life and fought ALS, the
disease that claimed him. Our support of the Michigan Chapter of the ALS Association has included
the 2008 cycling event, the 2008 Walk to Defeat ALS, the raffle at this year's CCM Banquet, and
the recent raffle at the Corvette Encounter.

Looking ahead, the 2009 Walk to Defeat ALS is planned for Saturday, October 3rd, at Belle
Isle. Once again, we have the blessing of Ken's family for this endeavor, and I'm writing to ask for
your support.

The Walk to Defeat ALS is a relaxed 3-mile walk, not a competitive event. Even strollers and
wheelchairs are welcome. It's a way for those of us aware of the ravages of ALS to show our
support for its victims and advance the work toward treatment and cure. "Ken's Friends" is
registered as a team:

http://web.alsa.org/site/TR/Walks/MichiganWalk?team_id=137520&pg=team&fr_id=5870

As you can see on the website, this is a low-key, no pressure kind of thing. In that spirit, I'm
simply letting you know about the event. If you wish to support us:
  - with thoughts or prayers;
  - by sponsoring one of the Ken's Friends walkers; and/or
  - by registering as a walker and joining us on Saturday, Oct 3rd....
...it's entirely up to you; this can be completely confidential or anonymous. If you register to walk,
you do not have to give a goal amount; that is already done for the "Ken's Friends" team.

Please join us in this celebration of Ken Watson! Once again this year, some of us walkers will
wear denim shirts (and/or Corvette shirts/jackets), in tribute to Ken.

Warm regards,
Russ
