NANCY TAIT MBE, OUR CHAMPION AGAINST ASBESTOS
Nancy Tait MBE, who died aged 89 in February, spent a Saturday afternoon once a month for 20 years
until recently here at St Barnabas’. She was a leading campaigner for the international ban on asbestos
for forty years after the death of her husband Bill from its dreadful lung disease, mesothelioma.
At Nancy’s monthly Support Group, she would give personal advice about the tricky business of claiming
Industrial Disablement Benefit, while people waiting shared their concerns over tea and biscuits in the
other room. She created an atmosphere of warmth, sympathy, expertise and trust. Churchwarden John
Mercer stood by as a friendly host.
Our church had been offered as a meeting-place by our priest, the late Father Fred Rollinson, who was a
social worker at St Joseph’s Hospice. Nearby is the London Chest Hospital and convenient buses and
tubes for the families of Essex car workers (brakes were lined with asbestos and London dockers who
had unloaded sacks of it from South Africa and Canada in clouds of killer dust. Mesothelioma takes
many years to develop.
There have been obituaries in the Guardian, Independent, Eastendlife and East London Advertiser, with
a report in Last Word on Radio 4 and an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons.
Ballet Classes at St Barnabas

St Barnabas Church hall on Monday 30th March between 3.30-7.00 for further information and enrolment
into the Academy. All welcome to come along and meet Miss Gilbert. Please contact Miss Lisa Gilbert on

Love, Loss and Laughter – Classical Concert
This wonderful concert being held at St B’s on Sat 25th April, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. There are 4
sopranos performing, solos and duets plus the Homerton Consort.
What we need is help advertising the concert and selling tickets. We also need people to help in the night.
It should be a fantastic night and a great opportunity to raise money as well as an opportunity to get more
people into the building.
If you think you can help please let Niki or Sorella know or email Sorella on firstname.lastname@example.org
or call 07961 414761.
