USA BASEBALL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING ORLANDO, FLORIDA, JANUARY 6, 2007 September 2006 – USA Baseball Olympic qualifying team won the Gold Medal in the America’s Olympic Qualifying tournament held in Cuba. They finished with a 8-1 record qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Baseball is not included in the 2012 Olympics. USA Baseball and MLB plan to attend the IOC meeting which will be held in Copenhagen 2009. At this time they will hopefully meet with the IOC committee and plead their case to add baseball as one of the their 28 Olympic sports in the 2016 Olympics. Currently there are 25 sports with automatic spots. They will select the final 3 sports to be included in the 2016 Olympics at this meeting. With the loss of funding from the USOC, USA Baseball has successfully worked out an agreement with MLB to provide funding for USA Baseball. With some give and take on both sides MLB has agreed to provide $1.2 million per year for a 10 year period to finance USA Baseball. This past summer USA Baseball teams were very successful. Three of the four teams won Gold Medals with the fourth winning a Silver. The USA Baseball Women’s National Team won the Gold Medal in the Women’s World Cup in Taiwan. They finished with a 5-1 record. One hundred women tried out for the world team. Anyone wishing to try out for one of the USA teams can register online at www.usabaseball.com. The grand opening of the USA Baseball Training Center in Cary, North Carolina will take place this June.
