Reef to Rainforest
Tropical North Queensland
Most of us assume an intimate knowledge of Australia –
cosmopolitan cities, unspoilt beaches, distinctive wildlife and the
vast red centre. Visiting Tropical North Queensland however, is a
truly different Australian experience as Rebecca Avent discovered.
Firstly, there is the remarkable colour of this region. It’s green, very
green. The tropical climate not only provides perfect weather to top
up your tan but it also supports the incredible rainforest and the wide
expanses of sugar cane, palm and banana plantations. My limited
knowledge of this part of Australia had me geared up for a relaxing
few days by the pool with cocktail in hand. But what surprised me
most was how a holiday in the tropical North really can be as relaxing
or adventurous as you like - from tranquil beachfront resorts, indulgent
spas or thrill-seeking adventure activities, to exploring the luscious
rainforest and stunning Great Barrier Reef.
First up for me was a visit to the picturesque mountain village of
Kuranda, just 25km from Cairns and offering art and craft markets
galore. Kuranda is the last stop on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway that
stretches an impressive 7.5km above the rainforest, offering spectacular
views over the Cairns’ tropical region and out to the Coral Sea beyond.

3. Country of contrasts
It’s a surreal experience to be driving along in a vast, dry desert
with nothing but dunes and rocky outcrops all around when
suddenly, on the horizon, you spot a bone fide oasis with lush
greenery, shrubs and water. Or, when you stumble across a
wadi (a dried up riverbed found in mountain valleys) that has
come alive because of the rains. With such a diverse range of
topography, including mountain ranges, arid deserts and fertile
unexpected in plains, you can never be sure what lies just around the next
corner in Oman.
Mention the Sultanate of Oman and most conjure up images of deserts, camels, rocky
outcrops and glimmering heat… which is true, Oman has all that. But it also has a whole
host of other special qualities that make it such a unique destination. A real country of
contrasts and one of our editor’s favourite spots, here is our list of top five unexpected
delights that make Oman such a special place.
1. Long sandy beaches
With about 1,700km of pristine coastline, Oman’s beaches
are truly spectacular. Much of the coastline is easily
accessible so there is always somewhere close by for a
bit of sunning, swimming, diving, snorkelling, boating,
surfing, sail boarding, beach combing or shell collecting. In
Muscat, many of the major hotels are beachfront… so you
get the best of both worlds.
Note: Please be aware of local sensibilities to avoid offence,
i.e. no topless bathing or very revealing swimwear.
2. Nesting turtles
Did you know that the beaches of Ras al-Jinz are the

making their way to the open sea. 5. The people
Of Oman’s entire amazing offering to the traveller, the most
heart-warming, delightful and unexpected part would have to
be its people. Our editor, Melanie, felt so safe, welcome and
respected when she travelled to Oman and her experiences
with the locals remain a highlight of her stay. With non-existent

in the snow. Balconies with hot tubs. Lots of natural light.
LUXURY: What new trends are you seeing in the
worldwide ski marketplace?
Morry: Everywhere you look, there’s a move towards using
the mountains all year round, as they do in Europe. So in
summer you have hiking, mountain biking, sightseeing and
even special activities, such as Olympic team training.
Having such a wide range of activities throughout the year
gives you a resort that’s economically viable 12 months of
the year. And you can only deliver that if you have fabulous
hotels. Otherwise the area just closes down.
LUXURY: Do you think there’s a uniquely Australian
approach to designing ski resorts?
Morry: Not really – our influences are international. We’re
positioning ourselves against the best in the world.
That said, we take care to reflect the colours and materials of
the Australian Alps. So the architects develop a design that
responds to the location. They specify unique materials, such
