Useful to thing about research in terms of materials types or genres

The range of research materials available:

--Monographs – including works by single and multiple authors
(including contributed essays and chapters within single books)

--Monographic Series (separate titles under uniform series title)

      --Government Documents and Reports

      --Disserations and Theses

      --Conference Proceedings

--Media: produced works (documentaries) – analagous in some
      ways to monographs

      --Primary Source Materials:
            --diaries
            --manuscripts
--contemporaneous books and journals and newspapers
            --oral histories
--MEDIA: feature films, primary footage or recordings, ads,
            broadcast media, etc.

--Journal literature: from pop to scholarly

--Newspapers: from national to local to highly specialized (eg ethnic
      news)

--Sundry Internet information: The good, the weird, and the
      incredibly unreliable.

Research Strategies and Research Realities
Some topics difficult or extremely complex to search in ANY type of
literature: require a combination of secondary lit background and
primary source materials or original research.

Some topics—either by virtue of their focus, their newness, their
complexity, or downright strangeness-- are grist for books or at least
doctoral dissertations rather than single-shot research papers: i.e.
they’d require a lot of intense, original research.

Berkeley is BIG, but it doesn’t have everything in the world…

Effective prelim research often quickly reveals which topics are best
put on the backburner or at least re-jiggered.

If a narrow search doesn’t cut it, GO LONG and WIDE:
If a specific subject term doesn’t yield anything: use synonyms,
      related terms
      THE JOYS OF KEYWORD SEARCHING

      BOOKS: the big picture
JOURNALS: often the narrow picture / contemporary research or
      news

CATALOGS

MELVYL/CDL Cat

--Includes circ data for some libraries (incl UCB)

GLADIS/PATHFINDER
--UCB holdings of books and journals
--NOT a journal index: use it to find a journal, not the contents of the
journal
      --Some links to full-text
      --Circ and copy-specific info

PATHFINDER:
Books! Best for historical rather than very contemporary coverage.

Quick Search (good for known items)
Full Search (good for more complex or involved
searching…instances where
it’s useful to put limits on the search universe)

--Fan* (Subject phrase): O HITS (EXPLAIN DIF BET
      KW AND PHRASE)

      --Fandom: AS TITLE KEYWORD
--Look at subject headings: FANS PERSONS

STRATEGY: eg Adultery in Film: There ARE NO BOOKS
SPECIFICALLY ON THIS SUBJECT, BUT there are a zillion on women’s
studies; on sex in film; on the family in film
