MASS COMM Useful to thing about research in terms of materials types or genres The range of research materials available: --Monographs – including works by single and multiple authors (including contributed essays and chapters within single books) --Monographic Series (separate titles under uniform series title) --Government Documents and Reports --Disserations and Theses --Conference Proceedings --Media: produced works (documentaries) – analagous in some ways to monographs --Primary Source Materials: --diaries --manuscripts --contemporaneous books and journals and newspapers --oral histories --MEDIA: feature films, primary footage or recordings, ads, broadcast media, etc. --Journal literature: from pop to scholarly --Newspapers: from national to local to highly specialized (eg ethnic news) --Sundry Internet information: The good, the weird, and the incredibly unreliable. Research Strategies and Research Realities Some topics difficult or extremely complex to search in ANY type of literature: require a combination of secondary lit background and primary source materials or original research. Some topics—either by virtue of their focus, their newness, their complexity, or downright strangeness-- are grist for books or at least doctoral dissertations rather than single-shot research papers: i.e. they’d require a lot of intense, original research. Berkeley is BIG, but it doesn’t have everything in the world… Effective prelim research often quickly reveals which topics are best put on the backburner or at least re-jiggered.
