Guilford County Schools Recognizes Educators Who Achieved National Board Certification®
Educators Receive Profession’s Top Recognition Greensboro, NC – The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced that 46 educators from Guilford County Schools (GCS) have earned the profession’s top recognition by receiving the prestigious National Board Certification. With 517 teachers total, GCS ranks 11th among all school districts in the nation for its number of National Board Certified educators. Nationwide, 9,600 teachers achieved the certification in 2008, a record-breaking number. This achievement brings the total number of teachers who achieved National Board Certification to nearly 74,000. A symbol of professional teaching excellence, the National Board Certification acknowledges that a teacher was judged by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about students’ best interests and acts effectively on those judgments. “I am pleased to see that 46 of our teachers have successfully completed the National Board Certification process,” said Dr. Peggy Thompson, chief human resources officer. “National Board Certification is a high standard to attain, and we are very proud of these teachers for achieving this accomplishment.” According to NBPTS, National Board Certification measures a teacher’s practice against high and rigorous standards through an extensive series of performance-based assessments, which includes teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes or DVDs and thorough analyses of the candidate’s teaching and the students’ learning. “Guilford County Association of Educators (GCAE)/North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is proud to be among the founding organizations of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, and we remain one of its strongest supporters,” said Mark Jewell, GCAE president. “Teachers across the district can attest to the positive effects the National Board Certification process has on their classroom practices. We congratulate all educators who have completed this rigorous, challenging and powerful learning experience.”
