Eric Becoats, Don Hare and Emily Scott met with representatives from the United States Department of Education in regard to the Federal Magnet Grant submission process for 2006. Magnet grants will be due to the United States Department of Education in early November 2006. The department plans to inform magnet grant recipients no later than May 1, 2007. During the meeting staff had an opportunity to review grants that were approved during the last submission. Based upon additional conversation and review of approved grants, Steve Brockhouse, deputy director, Parental Options and Information, suggested that our grant submission not include more than 7 schools and 4 program themes. Given the outcome of our meeting with Mr. Brockhouse, staff is recommending the following themes/schools be included as a part of our magnet grant application. Theme Montessori School(s) Erwin – Grades Pre-K through 8 Increased capacity at middle grades Already committed to this expansion Triangle Lake – Grades Pre-K through 8 Increased capacity at middle grades Already committed to this expansion International Baccalaureate Hairston – Grades 6 through 8 Establish a feeder for Falkener IB Ferndale – Grades 6 through 8 Establish a feeder 6-12 feeder

Penn-Griffin – Grades 6 through 12 Serves Western Guilford County District already committed to this expansion
Languages
Kirkman Park – Dual Immersion Program – Grades K through 5 Augmentation of existing Spanish Immersion Program Development of Mandarin Chinese Language Program to parallel Spanish Program
