(Synthesized Narrative from Self‐Assessment Exercises)
Hunter first opened as Bergman School in 1929 in what was then called Pomona. Thomas A Hunter owned the factory located in the
neighborhood and wanted the best for the children whose parents worked in his mill. Based on his deep concern for the school, he was allowed to
select the first principal, Mrs. R.A. Merritt. The citizens of the community loved Mr. Hunter so much that Mrs. Merritt went to the Greensboro City
Board of Education and requested that the name of the school be changed to the Thomas A. Hunter School.

"I want the children around here to have a school as good as any city school. I want them to have good books to study and good books to read for
special enjoyment." said Mrs. Merritt. The students later had the main street of Pomona renamed in her honor, which is now Merritt Drive.

Hunter Elementary has gone through many changes and improvements during the past 78 years, but Mrs. Merritt's philosophy still holds true. We
do want our children to have a school as good as every other school and we do want our children to have good books for study and enjoyment.
However, we want and expect much, much more of and for our students.

Our comprehensive Self-Assessment research indicates areas where we can celebrate success and areas that offer opportunities for
improvement. The math data for kindergarten through fifth grade and the reading data for kindergarten through fifth grade (performance
assessments and running records only- EOG TBA) reveal that we are making strides in many areas with our Hispanic and Limited English
Proficient (LEP) students. These subgroups did not make AYP for the 2006-2007 school year yet did for the 2007-2008 school year. At the same
time there are subgroups that are not making the necessary progress needed to maintain AYP status in math. Our African-American students are
not growing in the area of math at the same rate as the Hispanic and LEP students based on current EOG data. Slow growth margins for the
African-American subgroup and the Economically Disadvantaged subgroup resulted in our not attaining AYP status for the 2007-2008 school year.

For the 2007-2008 school year, in addition to our focus on improving achievement for our students in the African-American and Economically
Disadvantaged subgroups, we also supported the LEP subgroup (which includes a large percentage of the Hispanic subgroup) in math by
providing heavy math vocabulary immersion. The English as a Second Oral Language (ESOL) teachers invested additional time with all ESOL
students with concentration on vocabulary and word problem comprehension. As a result, the Hispanic and LEP subgroups made AYP high
growth. In third grade the entire cohort faired better than all other grades and we feel it is a result of this cohort being the first group to have
experienced Everyday Math instruction for their entire academic history. This is verification that the program Hunter has selected to use for math
instruction has the potential to increase math achievement for all students.

By 2011, the percentage of students scoring at or above proficiency in grades k-5 reading will increase by 10% each year from X%

Target SMART Goal/Measure:
TARGET Goal(s):
    1. By June 2009, 3rd through 5th grade students will increase READING proficiency by 10% from X% to X% as measured on the
        EOGs.
    2. By June 2009, the K through 2nd grade students will increase READING proficiency by 10% from 61.9% to 68.09% as
measured by the primary grades year end performance assessment data.

        • The state introduced higher standards in reading for 07-08 and re-normed the EOG reading test. While the changes in the
standards make it difficult to compare the 07-08 results with that of previous years, our scores reflect a dramatic drop.
While there is a dramatic drop in scores statewide, our school continues to take aggressive steps to boost students’
reading achievement and meet the higher standards set by the state.
