UC Denver Web Analytics Executive Summary and Report
October 15, 2010
The following report contains data pulled from our Google Analytics (GA) account for the
time period January 1, 2010 – September 30, 2010. Actual reports downloaded from GA are
available at the Home Page Branding & Redesign site.
Summary

Goals in Google
Within the administration settings in Google Analytics four “Goals” have been created to
help track how visitors are navigating to specific pages within our site. Landing on one of
these pages is considered a “Goal Conversion”.
Goal 1: Master Degree Application Page: /admissions/masters/Pages/index.aspx
Goal 2: Freshman Apply: /admissions/bachelors/freshman/Pages/Apply.aspx
Goal 3: Transfer Students Apply: /admissions/bachelors/transfer/Pages/Apply.aspx
Goal 4: Nursing Students Apply: /admissions/bachelors/nursing/Pages/Apply.aspx
vThe GA administrator (UWS) also defined a sequence of pages a site visitor would visit
before landing on the Goal page. These sequences are termed Goal Funnels.
The Goal Funnel Visualization reports* show the number of visitors who enter a Goal
Funnel and how those visitors navigated through the funnel. This includes visitors entering
the funnel midstream and those abandoning the funnel for other pages. This report provides
the total number of visitors who completed each goal and the funnel conversion rate of
those who traveled from the first step in the funnel to the last.

It should be noted that the Goal 1 Funnel consists of only 3 pages (Home, Admissions and
the Masters Degree Application page) whereas the other goals have 4 pages their funnels.
Fewer pages in a Goal Funnel increases the conversion rate compared to funnels with a
higher number of pages.
Funnel Exit Points
In all four Goal Funnels the main Admissions page is the second page in the funnel. Upon
reaching the Admissions page those exiting the funnel typically went to a page within one of
the other 3 funnels. This is not too surprising considering all four funnels include the main
Admissions page.
It is also worth noting that in all four Goal Funnels those exiting the Admissions page went
to the Downtown Campus Tours page. As seen in the Downtown Campus Tours
Navigation Summary report (ToursDDC_NavSum_201001-201009.pdf), of those viewers
that stayed in the site, over 25% of the visitors clicked into a Goal Funnel - either at the
Admissions page, Bachelor Students or Masters pages.
The GA Reverse Goal Path reports illustrate the most popular paths to each goal. Each
path consists of the entrance the visitor took to ucdenver.edu and the subsequent pages
that led to the goal conversion (or the last 3 pages the visitor viewed).

*Some pages have scripts for tabbed content that reloads the page when tabs are clicked. The re-loaded page
creates a duplicate entry in the navigation path.
Real conversions of these goals can be difficult to track since they require the visitor to
either print and submit a PDF application or submit their application through a web page not
hosted in MOSS. Neither of those actions can be measured within our GA account.
Content
The most popular pages within ucdenver.edu can be tracked using the Content reports in
Google Analytics. These reports show the number of Pageviews Unique Pageviews, Avg.
Time on Page, Bounce Rate and Exit percentage.
Note: Given the long time span this report is based on (1/1/2010 – 9/30/2010) the most
common pages (Home, Web Mail, Student Portal) dilute the significance of transitory pages
like Open House, Maymester, Graduation, news and events pages. Other pages that can get
overlooked are those related to maps, campus information, specific schools/colleges and
course catalogs.
Top Content
The Top 100 Pages report (TopContent_Page_100_201001-201009.pdf) displays the URL
(relative to the home page) in order of Pageviews.
The top 25 pages are heavily geared toward student interaction. Pages like Web Mail,
Portals, Current Students Gateway, eCollege, CUOnline and academic pages are primarily
used and designed for students.

The Top 100 Page of 8-23-2010 report (TopContent_Page_100_20100823.pdf) looks at
one specific day rather than a span of months. Monday, August 23 marked the opening of
campus for the Fall term. When campus opens we see a high volume of Pageviews for
course catalog pages, maps/parking page and contact information. This suggests we tailor
our navigation based on the cyclical needs of our viewers.

If filter the Top Content data in GA we can surface pages/sites that would otherwise be diluted by the
most common pages. And in some cases we find certain pages/sites are more popular than what GA
gives them credit for.

Home Page Analysis and Navigation Summary
From January 1 – September 30, 2010 the Home page was viewed 7,736,922 times. 89%
(6,885,860) of those views came upon entering the site, the remaining 11% came from
other pages within ucdenver.edu.
The Home page Bounce Rate for this period was 47%. This means almost half (3,636,353)
of those who entered the site on the home page immediately exited the site without going
further.
The Home Page Navigation Summary report (HomePage_NavSum_201001-201009.pdf)
shows the percentage of visitors who clicked deeper into the site and those who exited the
site. Similar to the Top Content report, the majority of clicks from the Home page led to the
Web Mail, Portal, Current Student Gateway, CU Online and the main Schools/Colleges
pages.

pages the majority of those who continue within ucdenver.edu navigate to the Home Page,

Home Page Entrance Paths
To get a better idea of how home page visitors are navigating through the site use the Entrance Paths
reports. The Home Page Entrance Paths reports* measure the number of visitors that entered the site
on the home page and follows them to the 2 subsequent pages.
Based on the top 10 ‘Next Pages’ and the top 5 ‘Second Pages’, we can see that most visitors to the
Home Page are looking for either Web Mail, the Portal page, CU Online or the Current Students
Gateway. Other pages that made the list include the Faculty Staff Gateway (Network) , Library,
Academic Calendar, and the Schools and Colleges page.

Keyword/Bounce Rate Analysis
When viewing Keywords and Bounce Rates in GA it is possible to view „Weighted‟ results to
better gauge which keywords are most relevant and how „sticky‟ those pages are that open
from the keyword search.
The Keyword report (KeywordsBounceHigh_HomePg_201001-201009.pdf) displays keyword
search terms that sent the visitor to the Home Page and produced the largest Bounce Rate
weighted by number of Visits. Higher bounce rates tell us the visitor did not find content
relevant to the search term on the landing page (Home Page) – thus they left the site
without going further.
Within the top 20 of this list are “uc denver admissions office number”, “university of
Colorado denver academic calendar” and “uc denver medical school”.

The Keyword – Low Bounce Rate report (KeywordsLowBounce_HomePg_201001-
201009.pdf) displays keyword terms that brought the visitor to the Home Page and were
relevant enough to the Home Page content that the visitor continued to click through the
site. A low bounce rate implies the user found what they were looking for on the Home Page
(based on the keyword term) and clicked further into the site.
