Finalists will be invited for an interview/audition between March 14

                                    Project: Transform
                                 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Project: Transform will bring together approximately 20 high school students from school districts
throughout Connecticut to create and perform a devised piece of theatre under the guidance of Hartford
Stage’s renowned artists-in-residence, Will Power and Justin Ellington. Participants will create their own
piece of performance art, a collage of voices representing themselves, their families, neighborhoods, and
communities, with the purpose of celebrating cultures and inspiring transformation and change. The project
will incorporate theatre, music, dance, spoken word and other art forms, drawing upon the creative interests
of the group. The performance piece will explore the idea of transformation of minds, neighborhoods, and
communities. The program will conclude in an outdoor public performance open to families, friends, and the
entire community. Participation in this program is free and open to all high school students in Connecticut.

                                             GUEST ARTISTS
Justin Ellington

Justin Ellington is a composer/producer/music director based in New York by way of Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout
his career he has worked with stellar artists in both theater and the recording industry.

His life in theater began as musical director of the Freddie Hendricks Youth Ensemble of Atlanta where he shared the
stage with the likes of broadway stars Sahr Ngaujah(Fela), Saycon Sengbloh(Wicked, Hair, Fela), and actor Kenan
Thompson(Saturday Night Live, Fat Albert)

Mr. Ellington most recently worked as a composer on the Lincoln Center Theater's production of Jon Robin Baitz's
Other Desert Cities, directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Assasins, Wicked); Neil Labute's The Break of
Noon, directed by Jo Bonney; Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s As You Like It, directed by Tony Award winner Des
Macnuff(Jersey Boys); and playwright Will Power’s Fetch Clay Make Man at the McCarter Theater, also directed by
Des Macnuff.

Other theater credits include: The Seven (New York Theatre Workshop – director Jo Bonney); Five Fingers of Funk
(Children’s Theatre Company – director Derrick Sanders); Conversations with Ice (Cosmic Theatre, Amsterdam);
Soweto! Soweto! A Township Is Calling (Freddie Hendricks YEA); Top Dog Underdog, King Hedley II, Shakespeare’s
R&J, Ferdinand the Bull (Alliance Theater); Class of 3000 Live! (Alliance Theatre/Cartoon Network).

Ellington is also a part of the Grammy award winning production company Bangladesh, which has produced hit
records for artists Beyonce, Usher, Ludacris, Ciara, Lil, Wayne, Nicki Minaj and many others.

Will Power

Will Power is an award-winning playwright, performer and educator.

As one of the theatre world’s shining stars, Power has been called an “electrifying” (Newsday) and “dynamic
performer” (Variety). Among his numerous awards, Will Power has received a United States Artists Fellowship, the
prestigious TCG Peter Zeisler Memorial Award, a Lucille Lortel Award (Best Musical), a Joyce Award, a NYFA
Fellowship, a Jury Award for Best Theatre Performance at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, and a Drama Desk
nomination.

Known as a pioneer in the genre of Hip Hop Theatre, Power’s adaptation of the Greek tragedy “Seven Against
Thebes,” re-titled “The Seven,” completed a successful Off-Broadway run at the New York Theater Workshop, before
transferring to The La Jolla Playhouse. The play was hailed as both an audience favorite and a critical success, and
called everything from “brilliant” (The Village Voice), to “exhilarating” (USA Today), to “a spectacular offering to the
theater Gods” (Time Out New York). Will Power’s nationally and internationally acclaimed solo show FLOW has
been described as “astounding” (CurtainUp) and “theater with the refreshing aroma of originality” (New York Times).
As a writer, Power’s recent plays include Fetch Clay, Make Man (McCarter Theatre, Directed by Des McAnuff,
starring Ben Vereen), and Five Fingers of Funk (Children’s Theatre Company, Directed by Derrick Sanders).

Will Power’s skills have also been captured on television and film. He was a featured guest on The Colbert Report
(Comedy Central), Bill Moyers on Faith and Reason (PBS), Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC) and Russell Simmon’s
Def Poetry Jam (HBO). He was the lead male in the film, Drylongso (Sundance Film Festival), and was also featured
in the documentary, All Fathers are Sons (PBS). In addition, Power has composed lyrics and music heard on MTV,
UPN’s Moesha, and Kingpin on NBC. Will Power’s varied skills as playwright/performer are matched only by his
remarkable teaching ability, providing communities across the globe with tools of self-expression.

REHEARSALS:
     Rehearsals will be Saturdays (4/23- 6/4 from 9am-5pm) All rehearsals will be held at Hartford Stage.
     You MUST attend every rehearsal unless you speak with us in advance.
PERFORMANCES:
     All accepted students will attend a performance of 39 Steps at Hartford Stage on April 23.
     The date for the final performance of PROJECT: TRANSFORM is set for June 4 & 5.
TRANSPORTATION:
     Families will be responsible for student transportation to rehearsals and performances. Reimbursement
     may be given for bus tickets and parking. No reimbursement will be provided for mileage.

21, May 28. Performances are: Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5. Hartford Stage may provide reimbursement
