Despite troubles faced by some euro-zone countries, the global economic situation is
stabilising, and Poland's nearly
4% GDP growth means that virtually all sectors of the Polish economy are performing
well. Meanwhile, the Polish food sector is standing out from other sectors. Apart from
financial data of each sectors, also the scale of bankruptcies is a proof of this situation.
According to Coface’s report, Polish courts have declared bankruptcy of 655 firms,
which is down by 5.2% vs. 2009, while the food industry posted a 20% decline of
bankruptcies. In this sector, though, meat producers and meat processing firms faced
troubles the most. In terms of companies producing foodstuffs and beverages, 35 firms
collapsed in 2010 (44 ones a year earlier), and in terms of the wholesales trade – 107
companies ( vs. 138 a year earlier), and in terms of retail sector – 25 ( 30 ones in 2009).
The current year heralds positive situation, but hikes of
VAT tax rates may trigger some fears. The VAT rate rise’s impact on future prices is
diffciult to estimate, as the rate
was increased on some products, but in majority of them, the tax was decreased from 7%
to 5%. Experts are therefore cautious in forecasting trends in 2011.
