I f you feel busy and overwhelmed this holiday season, consider the schedules of Orange Tree residents
Beth and Danny Gottlieb, and Beth’s sons Brian and Scotty Radock:
                                                   • Beth and Danny just returned from Afghanistan, where they entertained American troops as part
of the Lt. Dan Band, the musical group named after band leader Gary Sinese’s character in Forest
                                                   • Brian and Scotty, as part of the University of Alabama Million Dollar Band, performed on national
TV during the SEC championship game between Alabama and the Florida Gators. Beth was also in
Atlanta for the game; she is part of the University’s faculty and teaches the percussionists.
                                                   • Danny finished up his semester as an associate professor of jazz studies at the University of North
                                                   • Beth and Danny are in Orlando for a few weeks where they perform nightly in EPCOT Center’s
                                                        Candlelight Processional.
                                                   • Beth and Danny flew to Fort Hood, Texas this month to perform at a memorial service for victims
of the November 5 massacre, entertained soldiers at Brooks Army Medical Center and played for
soldiers’ families at a Snowball Express event.
                                                   • Brian and Scotty are hard at work preparing for the Million Dollar Band’s performance in January
in Pasadena, CA, for the national championship football game.
Idle time is not in the playbook for this family, and they never pass up an opportunity for public service.
They have been an unforgettable influence on hundreds of kids in Southwest Orlando.
Beth started the percussion classes at the St. Luke’s School of the Arts 15 years ago and taught there until
recently. Her students could be found on Friday nights performing on the drumlines of high schools
throughout Central Florida and in college bands on Saturdays. She also taught percussion at Rollins
                                                   College for many years.
Five years ago she and Danny, an internationally known jazz drummer, met Gary Sinese during his guest
appearance in the Candlelight Processional and Sinese asked them to join the Lt. Dan Band.
“Gary is an amazing humanitarian and he has taken us all over the world to military installations
everywhere—Guantanamo Bay, Korea, Okinawa, Europe-- but our trip to Afghanistan was the first time
I’ve ever been in a war zone. It was terrifying, but life changing,” Beth said.
“We were at Marine Camp Leatherneck and Kandahar and our planes literally dodged bullets as we
were taking off. When I ran in the morning, I was accompanied by Marines with guns. There were land
mines and IEDs everywhere. The Marines’ lives are on the line every minute of every day, but despite it,
morale is great over there. You never really read about it, so it was a pleasant surprise.”
Beth found one thing she brought from home—her Crimson Tide t-shirt—had a bonding effect on the
“It was so cool because fans from all of the SEC schools would yell out to me and wave and smile. It
created an instant bond with people and it was great to see the smiles especially when you know how
                                                   stressful everyone’s lives are.”
There was stress of a different sort when Beth switched gears and headed to Atlanta for the SEC
championship game. “The excitement was unbelievable and the Georgia Dome was so loud. I have

students playing in the Florida band, too, and loved seeing both schools’ bands playing the national
                                                   anthem together before the game.”
Attending a large SEC school has been a big adjustment for Brian and Scotty, Beth said, after studying
                                                   at Rollins.
“The week Scotty arrived at Band Camp at Alabama, he was told he was scheduled to perform for Nick
Orange Tree residents perform around the world Saban. Scotty asked, ‘Who is that?’ Now he knows.”
