                           Dear Friends,

In August 2007, we welcomed our first group of 9th graders here to Cristo
Rey Jesuit High School for the Freshmen in Training (FIT) program, to prepare
them for an experience many had never imagined before—working in
professional office environments. Our students learned about workplace
ethics and etiquette, keyboarding, office machines, filing methods and
resumé building. In less than a month’s time, they would take their places
in corporate offices throughout Baltimore where they would work with
professional adult colleagues, carry out a variety of duties, and begin to
Rev. John W. Swope, S.J. learn how to manage the world of work.

One of the phrases that marked the first week of FIT in August 2007 was, “first impressions are
lasting impressions.” Frequently our staff would ask our students to complete the phrase, “first
impressions are …” and the students would thunder back, “… lasting impressions.” When classes
officially commenced a month later, students were introduced to the more sophisticated teaching
methods associated with the 450-year legacy of Jesuit education. But during this first experience
at Cristo Rey Jesuit, our students were eager to soak up all of the lessons our school had to offer
including the first and simplest lesson: first impressions are lasting impressions.

Over the course of their 9th grade year, Cristo Rey Jesuit’s students learned the importance of first
impressions at school and in the workplace. Many of our students had a significant hill to climb to
handle the demands of our college preparatory academic program. Our principal and teachers have
maintained a high standard for our students. They have steered clear of the “soft bigotry of low
expectations.” Our young men and women have responded with grace, maturity, and a dedication
that underscores their commitment to their Cristo Rey Jesuit education.

The commitment of our first 29 corporate clients to employ and mentor our young people opened up
a new world for them, and allowed them to forge lifelong ties to Baltimore’s business community. The
supervisors of our student-workers have been impressed by students’ commitment to their work and
to their education.

Young people from disadvantaged urban neighborhoods rarely see the corporate world and
most never will. People working in corporate America seldom have the opportunity to gain an
understanding of the true challenges young urban Americans face. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
brings these worlds together with returns that will far exceed the investment. Students will benefit
by being given the tools to succeed in college, in work and in life. Baltimore City will benefit from
talented, educated, compassionate young people assuming leadership roles in the community.

Thank you, our donors and volunteers, for being an important part of our inaugural year and for
helping Cristo Rey Jesuit make a first and lasting impression.

Sincerely,

Rev. John W. Swope, S.J.
President
    Board Commitment
Emboldened by a vision of what can be possible for the children of Baltimore City, a
group of business and community leaders came together to form the board of trustees of
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. This outstanding board is distinguished in Baltimore for its
prominence, strength and sheer determination to build a school that will produce a new
generation of leaders for the community.
Deeply committed to Cristo Rey Jesuit, each trustee made a financial contribution to
the school in the 2007–08 fund year. Board members have made commitments to our
major gifts campaign, scholarship campaign, and Bridges to the Future Fund, all totaling
$5,252,430 in these foundational years. During the 2008 fiscal year they contributed
$774,930 in cash toward these commitments.

“When Cristo Rey Jesuit was presented to me as an opportunity to make a difference in education for
young people in the city, it struck a chord with me. Coming here, and seeing the facility, outstanding
staff, and the very committed board, I knew it had all the elements necessary for its success.”

    Faculty and Staff Commitment
Each member of the faculty and staff works to contribute to the life of the school and to better
serve Cristo Rey Jesuit students. Those staff members who began the school year with us had an
86% participation rate in our Bridges to the Future Fund. Many new staff members also made gifts
upon joining the Cristo Rey Jesuit community.

Corporate Internship Program Clients
In the corporate offices of the companies listed below, our students held productive
and interesting first jobs in professional settings. Supervisors gave students important
responsibilities and held them accountable for their work. Navigating the downtown,
mastering computer software, and learning how to take initiative are some of the
important lessons students learned in their first jobs. Armed with confidence, new skills
and great attitudes, Cristo Rey Jesuit sophomores are “old hands” in the workplace,
showing the new freshmen how it’s done. Below is a list of corporate internship program
clients for the 2007-2008 school year.

    Scholarship Campaign
Just after Cristo Rey Jesuit High School opened its doors for the first time in fall 2007,
more than 150 business and community leaders gathered on a warm summer evening
at Caves Valley Golf Club. They arrived eager to learn more about this new educational
option for students from disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhoods. Earl Linehan, Jack
Luetkemeyer, and Jim Davis welcomed their guests and introduced a graduate of the
Chicago Cristo Rey school, Karina Ramirez, and a member of the Baltimore Cristo Rey
Jesuit inaugural freshman class, Xavier Cole.
Trustees then rolled out Cristo Rey Jesuit’s Scholarship Campaign. They explained that
Cristo Rey Jesuit students made a commitment to themselves and to their future. The
students agreed to work five days per month, earning $6,250 over the course of a year
and contributing those earnings toward the cost of their education. Trustees explained
that guests could partner with students by becoming scholarship benefactors, contributing
another $6,250 per student per year to cover the remaining costs per student.
Through the generosity of committed and visionary foundations and individuals, every
freshman in our inaugural class received a scholarship. We have now begun to secure
scholarship commitments for incoming freshmen. We deeply appreciate those who
have partnered with our students. Donors who made direct scholarship commitments
to students from the class of 2011 and 2012 are listed here. Cash received toward
scholarships during the 2008 fiscal year totaled $923,928.20.

     Bridges to the Future Fund
Cristo Rey Jesuit students are reaching out in service to the Baltimore community.
During the 2007-2008 school year they volunteered more than 1000 hours at several
organizations including Beans & Bread Outreach Center, Stella Maris, and for the
Martin Luther King, Jr. day of service at Saint Frances Academy Community Center.
These experiences combined with classroom lessons encourage our students to become
compassionate individuals who will continue to make positive contributions in their
Baltimore City neighborhoods as adults. Donors are listed below in giving circles named
after some of the neighborhoods where our students reside. Many thanks to our donors
who have contributed by making a gift to the Bridges to the Future Fund. Bridges to the
Future Fund gifts are outright gifts of up to $9,999 made between July 1, 2007 and
      June 30, 2008.

     Volunteers and Tutors
Volunteers and tutors are vital to our students’ success. Volunteers help to secure clothing
donations, staff events and provide administrative support. Tutors work with students
through our academic support program. Upon enrolling at Cristo Rey Jesuit, many of our
students need intensive individualized academic instruction. Anne Price, assistant principal
for student academic support, and David Haddad, volunteer coordinator, work together
to match students with tutors depending on the students’ needs. Our volunteers clock
up to a total of 200 tutor hours per week and bring expertise and compassion to their
multiple roles as supporter, instructor, mentor, and friend. Several schools have promoted
this volunteer opportunity to their students, faculty and staff. More than 70 volunteers
from Loyola College in Maryland have served as tutors. Notre Dame Preparatory School,
Maryvale Preparataory School, and Loyola Blakefield have also organized many tutors to
support Cristo Rey Jesuit students. Many thanks to our volunteers and tutors who work
countless hours to ensure our students’ success.

“The community has really jumped in and supported us in ways that I find amazing. We have
tutors everyday who come and help us, we have volunteers who come into the classroom and
work with teachers. Center Stage supported us by sending our students to four different plays
this season. That was a really wonderful experience for our students.”

     Parent Teacher Association Officers
Our parent teacher association was established in the 2007-2008 school year by the
following founding officers. Members of the PTA dedicated their time and energy to
support Cristo Rey Jesuit students. They raised funds to support student events, including a
sensational Spring Fling, and provided important input on the uniforms that students would
wear in the next school year.

CRJ Advocacy Network
Across the Cristo Rey Network, many schools face a similar challenge. Significant long-
term volunteer and financial support is essential to ensure the continued health and
vitality of the school. Established independent schools look to alumni for help. However,
new schools aren’t blessed with alumni yet! Fortunately, across the network individuals
have recognized the importance of the Cristo Rey mission and, just as alumni would, have
stepped forward to form groups that promote the schools.
In Baltimore, a group of committed individuals are dedicated to raising awareness of
Cristo Rey Jesuit. At networking happy hours in venues throughout the area, hosts
invite friends and colleagues to learn more about the school and how they may become
involved. Many thanks to those who have come forward to host these events during the
 2007-2008 giving year.

Development Advisory Committee
With creativity, energy, and enthusiasm, the development committee works diligently
to foster the development of the CRJ Advocacy Network and to plan a spring signature
fundraising event. Plans are already underway for Stand Up for Students, a comedy event
to take place in spring 2009! We are deeply grateful to this group for their many hours of
work on behalf of Cristo Rey Jesuit.

     Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School was founded by the Maryland Province of the Society of
Jesus (Jesuits) in 2007 to serve families from disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhoods.
Cristo Rey Jesuit utilizes a longer school day and year, academic assistance, and counseling
to prepare students with a broad range of academic abilities for college. All students
participate in a work study program through which they finance the majority of the cost
of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realize
the relevance of their education. Teams of four students job-share entry-level positions in
businesses and nonprofits throughout the Baltimore area. This unique model, developed
at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago (established in 1996), is now in place at 22
Cristo Rey high schools throughout the United States.

     Cristo Rey Network®
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is a member of the Cristo Rey Network®, a national
association of high schools that provide quality, Catholic college preparatory education
to urban young people who live in communities with limited educational options. Most
students in Cristo Rey Network® schools qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch
program. The network’s high schools are located in urban areas throughout the country.
As a member of the Cristo Rey Network® we are able to implement a proven, tested
educational model in Baltimore City. Cristo Rey Jesuit benefits from sharing best practices
with all network schools and by leveraging national relationships. As a member of the
network, Cristo Rey Jesuit is also held to mission effectiveness standards. These standards
ensure that our business plan, administrative structure, and curriculum are organized to
prepare urban students for success in college, in work and in life.

     Maryland Province Jesuits
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is sponsored by the Maryland Province Jesuits. The Jesuits
have been educators for more than 450 years, and have been engaged in education in
Baltimore since 1852. Internationally recognized educators, the Jesuits sponsor 51 high
schools and 28 colleges and universities in the United States, enrolling more than
       200,000 students.

“Surprisingly, I spend most of my time here at Cristo Rey Jesuit. I am a member of the indoor
and outdoor soccer teams, as well as the girl’s softball team. I am a member of fashion club,
yearbook committee and speech and debate team…Once again thank you so much for this
opportunity. Being here at Cristo Rey I have learned that this is a great education that I have
not been simply given, but one that I have to work hard for each and every day. Thank you
for giving me the chance to do that work.”
