                           AIS QUEST REQUIREMENTS

You must read each book independently. Books read as a class will not count toward the
requirements for this award.

You must take the AR test, if it is available, and achieve an 80% or better on all Quest for the
Best book tests taken.

You must keep a “reader’s notebook” which includes the following information and responses
to each book.

I.     Book Information:

       Date completed
       Title
       Author
       Call number and genre
       AR reading level
       AR score

II.    Your responses, using complete sentences, to the following questions:

       Did you like the book? Why or why not?
       Would you recommend it, and to whom would you recommend this book?
           Why?
       What part of this book did you like best? Why?
       As a “passage master,” recopy an excerpt from the book that has meaning for
           you. Explain why that passage has meaning for you.
       Describe the setting of this book or novel.
       Describe the main character(s) in this book.

III.   Choose one of the questions from your AIS Quest for the Best Study
         Guide on page 5 and respond to it in your journal. Please try to use a
         variety of the questions in your responses to your reading.

You must complete a “book fair” project related to one of the books you read from the list.
See page 6 of this Study Guide for the project guidelines.

A member of the reading committee must verify your progress at least once during each nine
weeks.

In order to receive a bronze medal, students must read all of the books in Tier 1 and Tier 2,
as well as 10 of the books from Tier 3.

In order to receive a silver medal, students must read all of the books in Tier 1 and Tier 2, as
well as 10 of the books from Tier 3 and 10 of the books from Tier 4.

In order to receive a gold medal, students must read all of the books from Tier 1 and Tier 2,
as well as 10 of the books from Tier 3, 10 of the books from Tier 4, and all of the books from
Tier 5. (Those who read at least 10 of the books from Tier 6 will receive an additional award.)

                      AIS QUEST STUDY QUESTIONS


1. Write ten interesting facts which you learned from reading this book.

2.   Write a letter to one of the characters in the novel. Ask him or her questions,
     as well as tell about yourself.

3.   If you could talk with the author, what are two or three questions that you
     would ask?

4.   What came as a surprise in this book? Why?

5.   Do any of the characters remind you of friends or family members? Explain.

6.   What are the best parts of this book? Why?

7.   What are the worst parts of this book? Why?

8.   Did this book make you laugh? Cry? Cringe? Smile? Cheer? Explode?
     . . . another emotion? Explain your reaction.

9.   Make a timeline of the events of the story.

10. What characters did you dislike? Why?

11. What do you feel is the most important word or words, phrase, passage, or
    paragraph in this work? Explain why it is so important.

12. Describe the setting of this book.

13. What is the main problem in the story?

14. Make a series of five drawings depicting the major points.

15. Design a word search puzzle using words, characters, and/or place names
    from the story.

16. Which character would make a good friend? Why?

17. Make a bookmark illustrating this story. On the back of the bookmark, write
    at least five words you would use to describe the story.

                           AIS QUEST FINAL PROJECT


You must complete a “book fair” project related to one of the books you read from the
list. Your project will be due the second week in April. It should be presented on a
project board and include all of the following:

      I.   Written information about the author

              A list of the works by the author

              Biographical information about the author

              Awards won by the author

      II. Visual elements

              Author

              Plot

              Characters

              Setting

              Theme or symbols

              Genre

      III. Kinesthetic elements

              Three to five objects which represent the chosen book and how
              they relate to the story.

      IV. Reader’s Response

              Your response to the book.

                      AIS QUEST REQUIREMENTS (Year 2)

Students who completed the Quest Recommended Reading List last year should follow the
guidelines on page 5 and complete the tiers as stated here.

In order to receive a bronze medal, students must read all of the books in Tier 2, 15 of the
books in Tier 3, and 10 of the books in Tier 4.

In order to receive a silver medal, students must read all of the books in Tier 2, 15 of the
books in Tier 3, 10 of the books in Tier 4, and all of the books in Tier 5.

In order to receive a gold medal, students must read all of the books in Tier 2, 15 of the
books in Tier 3, 10 of the books in Tier 4, all of the books in Tier 5, and 10 of the books Tier
6.
