```					Your heart beats many times over the course of one year. Determine your heart rate and calculate how many beats are there in a year? How many times will your heart beat by the time you graduate high school in 5 years? 39420000 = 3.942 x 10^7 (for 1.25 beats per second), 1.971 x 10^8 beats Assuming that an ant is 0.005 grams, there are 150 ant hills per acre, each hill has 250,000 ants, what is the mass of ants in one acre? What is the mass of ants in Arkansas if Arkansas has 33900000 acres? 187500 = 1.875 x 10^5 grams, 6.356 x 10^12 grams = 1.40 x 10^10 pounds Water has a mass of 1,000,000 grams per cubic meter. The earth has approximately 1,408,800,000,000,000,000 cubic meters of water, what is the total mass of the water on earth? 1.4088 x 10^24 grams If the speed of light is 3.0 x 10^8 m/s and the sun is 1.5 x 10^11 m from the earth, how long does it take light from the sun to reach the earth? 500 seconds = 5.00 x 10^2 seconds = 8 1/3 minutes Resistors in series add. What is the resistance of two resistors in series if one is 10,000,000 Ohms and the other is 0.01 Ohms? 1.0 x 10^7 A Compact Disk (CD) rotates at about 500 rpm. If the disk has 60 minutes of music, how many times does the disk rotate if it is played once a week for 10 years? 1.56 x 10^7 rotations Use these values and any others that you may find to calculate ridiculously large values. Have the class help you in the calculations (i.e. write what they say on the board). Make sure to write each zero and get tired as you go. Keep dropping hints that you want a better way to do this. If none of the students pick up on the hints, ask them if they can think of a better way to do this. Record each of the ideas on the board as the students develop and refine them. In my experience, they will develop something that is 10^x ish in nature. Use this to transition to scientific notation. The idea here is not to develop scientific notation in detail, but rather to ensure a fundamental understanding of the notation. If there is time introduce the concept of rounding.
