   Nurse Qualification Standard


 The Nurse Qualification Standard
  includes:
   4 Dimensions
   9 Criteria
   Improves the effectiveness of patient care through
    the use of more complex skills
   Applies scholarly knowledge to practice.
   Assumes greater responsibility for the
    improvement of patient care.
   Steady progress towards professional goals

   Nurse Qualification Standards

 Modeled after the ANA Standards of
  Clinical Nursing Practice (1991)
 Four Practice Dimensions (all Dimensions
  must be met each year at current Grade
  level)
 Each Grade/level has a general statement
  of Scope
 Each Grade/level has educational
  requirements
 Current Qualification Standards became
  effective on December 10, 1999

The Qualification Standard Exists
      To Support VA RN’s

1. Provide high quality care to Veterans in
   range of clinical roles and settings

2. Evolve professionally as the VA
   transforms

3. Are provided a basis for peer review
   process (NPSB) to be appointed, retained,
   promoted, and/or advanced/rewarded

 The effective use of the nursing process to

 Considers factors related to safety,

  evaluates and improves the quality and
  effectiveness of nursing practice and health

           Self-Evaluation

 The RN is responsible for providing a
  timely self assessment of
  performance to the rating official (a
  requirement to meet the Performance
  Dimension)
 If a self assessment is not completed,
  the highest rating possible for that
  individual is satisfactory
