I apologize for the poor formatting. I copied and pasted the entries into a
Word document. The last time I tried to create a new message board I lost all
entries, so at least these are preserved. I hope it’s not too much of a hassle to
view these.

Thanks, Ken. I didn't know Dr. Bills personally, but he and Colonel Ed
Hornickle were from the same era and had very similar military backgrounds,
including entering the Army as infantry officers.

Tomorrow, August 19th is the 45th anniversary of my USAF enlistment, whee!
Thought I'd make the announcement today since I remembered it, may not
remember tomorrow. Not many seem to know him, but, I'd like to see Michael
G. Kirwan, CMSgt, Retired at the reunion. Last I knew he was in So Cal,
Riverside, I think, after retiring as Commandant of the MAC West NCO
Academy at Norton in '80 something. If anyone knows him and/or his contact
info, please sound off. Was with Mike in '65 to '67 at Charleston AFB and
crossed paths again in Taiwan about '69 or '70 when he was at CCK and I was
at Vet Det 1, Taichung. Elbow finally almost 100%, playing golf once a week,
will step it up this fall when the weather cools down a little.

I got my morning paper today, and on the first page was a picture of Dr. Mike
Horton. I regret to let you all know that he accidentaly drowned in a pond in
his back yard on Thursday. Dr. Horton worked as a resere vet with AMRL at
Wright Patt, and retired as a Colonel. I knew him quite well, both a AMRL,
and as my pet's vet for the past 12 years. He and his wife were very active in
community affairs in Fairborn, and will be missed by all. According to the
paper he was 62.

I have been diagnoised with prostate cancer and all that I want to do in this
message is to urge everyone if they have not had a PSA to GET ONE!!! A
simple blood test to check your prostate is all that it takes. I have had this test
every year for the past 10 years or so with good results, but this year I hit the
"big time". :):) I have Stage 2 and presently going through radiation and
hormone therapy. The radiation therapy is a piece of cake but the hormone
therapy is something else. I now have "hot flashes" and ladies I now know
what you all have gone through. Some of you may not like going to the doctor,
but the longer you wait, the more serious the condition can become. I am in
good spirits and know that we will defeat this disease. For those of you who
already know, thank you for your emails and phone calls. I'll get off my
soapbox and on to more pleasant things. Dee and I are starting to plan our trip
to the next reunion in March and can't wait to see all of you on North Padre
Island.

Sorry about the previous two entries with no comments, I had no clue of how
this thing works. Just wanted to say "hi" to those out there who know me. I
recognize Jim Anderwald, "Mac" McClendon, Harry White, some others as
well. Won't be able to attend the reunion. My husbands and my hours have
both been cut and there isn't any spare cash to make the trip. I hope those that
do attend have a great time. I enjoy seeing the photos from past reunions. They
bring many fond memories back from my years as a Vet Tech.

It's been awhile since I last visited the site. Sorry to learn that we
have lost so many fine members. I was shocked to learn that Jack
Kielty was one them. I worked for Jack at Wiesbaden,AB Germany
in the early 1970's. He was a wonderful supervisor and he taught me
a great deal about lab/animal work as we were assigned to the 4th
Epi Lab. I also leared a lot about time management & family from
him. He and his wife seldom ever got a vacation as they had 5 very
active kids. My wife Marie and I volunteered to baby sit their kids so
they could have some quality time together. Since we only have one
son, imagine our surprise when we had to juggle time for the
activities of 6 kids all involved in different after school programs.
What a blast and a wonderful life experience we had. I'm pretty sure
they preceded The Brady bunch. If any of you know the where
about's of Lt Col's Allen Hall or Sheldon Diamond, please let me
know as they were the OIC's during our tour. Regretfully, I won't be
able to make the reunion. We have company coming in that very
week. Hopefully, I'll make it next year.

Howdy, I just wanted to attach Dr. Inman's obituary since you may
or may not have heard of his battle with leukemia and death in
January 2009. Please keep Karen and his family, in your prayers as
they tackle this most difficult time. Roger and Karen lived next to us
at Wright-Patt for 5 years and we worked at the Armstrong
Laboratory together ... he was always kind, considerate and
knowledgeable and a good Air Force friend and researcher.

I was saddened to read about the death of Colonel William E. Pace.
Bill and I go way back to the late forties and early fifties. We were
students at the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine.
I graduated in 1950 and Bill did in 1951. Also we were fraternity
brothers in Alpha Psi. It was many years later before our trails
crossed several times at the School of Health Care Sciences,
Sheppard AFB, TX. Bill was a very intelligent and dedicated officer.
His ability to disect a problem and develop corrective measures was
outstanding. My deepest sympathy is extended to his family and
friends. Robert O. Shannon, Colonel, USAF, VC Retired

I was very sad to read that Bill Pace had died. Bill was a long time
friend. We had taught together at the medical service school and he
was one of my deputies when I was chief. We worked on setting up
what is the Public Health Officer positions for vets ni the BSC when
the Corps was abolished. When I retired he finished the job. He will
be missed!!! On a lighter note , the reunion in Tunica, MS was a
success and a lot of fun. Finally, let us all pray for Billie Griffin,s
speedy recovery!!

For those of us who do not golf (no offense RB) I have checked into a trip to

discount. If anyone else is interested, drop me an email or use the website.

great deal to do with my making Chief. He was all that RB stated and more.
My favorite line that he used and I still do is "Between me and the Sarg we
know everything but thats one of the things that the Sarg knows, Colonel.
Tell the Colonel about that Sarg." A tremendous loss. Al Stone

word that best typifies Jim May---a Gentleman! I know of at least four men

Don Rainwater Wednesday, 7/11/07, 7:25 PM

Here's a bit of nostalgic irony which hit a soft spot in my heart. I was
stationed at Roosevelt Roads Naval Base (AFELM) in Puerto Rico in the
mid-to-late 70s. During that time, the OIC was Capt Philip Johnson and our
NCOIC was Dave Mooney. I used to play tennis with Dr. Johnson and Dave
took me and my wife under his wing as if we were family. He and Dr.
Johnson got along okay but it took a while for the two of them to warm up
to each other. As it turns out, they both died of cancer and are now laying in
rest about 100 yards apart at the San Antonio cemetary. I miss them both.
Dave was an instructor when I went through tech school but turned into one
of the best friends a young airman could have and it made me very proud to
have him be the one that pinned on my Recruiting Badge in 1986, when I
decided to do recruitment for a while. His firm but fair approach to
leadership and his personal off-duty friendship is something I always tried
to model as I assumed NCOIC and Superintendent duties - I don't believe I
was ever able to live up to his example but I do hope and feel that I helped
some airmen along the way. RIP Dr. Johnson and Chief Mooney - Aim
High! Don.

Fun to see all the picturess of the 2007 reunion. RB has been on me to come
to another one but....at least this time I had it on the calendar. Guess it will
have to be next year. Am still working as Director, Environmental Health

Also enjoy reading all the emails on the site on occasion. My office is just
across the hiway from our city golf course but my game isn't so hot. The
course is pretty - go to the website: www.fossiltrace.com to view some neat

I just read about the promotion of Col Theresa Casey to General. I
remember when she came through the schoolhouse. It is good to know that
her career path to becoming a General must have had something to do with
me presenting the food inspection modules to her. If I remember right she
may have been in the last class of vets. The class consisted to two people.
Those two ladies were definately the best looking class ever.

I had to zap my hard drive and in the process lost all the sites I had book
marked. This site being one of my favorites (OF COURSE) I set out to find
it. I came across this web site: http://www.vspa.com/k9/veterinarian7.htm It
is about Lt.Col Daniel Holland USA Vet.Corp being killed in Iraq on 18
May 2006 by an IED that hit the vehicle he was in. I feel that he is one of us
and thought I would pass this on to you all. Some of you might have met
him or what ever: he is still one of us. This site had some pictures of AF
Vets working on dogs in Viet Nam.

My father was Col. Ted M. Richardson. He was a veterinarian in the USAF
and retired in 1975. He served in Vietnam from 1967-68 at Da Nang. Sadly
he died in 1983 partially due to a weakened immune system from Agent
Orange. If anyone knows of any stories or served with him in Vietnam or
other places my sister and I would love to hear from you. We lived in
Louisana, New York, England, California, Illinois, and Alaska. Almost all
of the bases have been closed now. Mitchell Field, Chenault Field,
Lakenheath-Mildenhall, Rantoul, Anchorage, Plattsburg, and we did a stint at
Camp Pendleton. Thanks, Peggy Harmer (Richardson)

Here's the article on the new General. Just received this from Bill Pace
yesterday. Colonel Theresa M. Casey has been appointed to brigadier
general and will become the first general in the Air Force to represent the
Biomedical Sciences Corps. She will serve as director of medical
modernization and chief information officer at Air Force headquarters in
Falls Church, Va. Previously, she served as the Air Combat Command
deputy command surgeon at the Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. "This is
great for the profession of veterinary medicine, the public health career field,
and certainly BSC;' Co!. Casey said. She graduated from the Oklahoma
State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982, the same year she
entered the Air Force as a captain. The BSC is the third largest branch of the
Air Force Medical Service, with more than 2,400 personnel and up to 17
specialties, including physical therapy, optometry, and entomology. In 1983,
the Air Force Veterinary Corps was eliminated from the Air Force, and the
remaining veterinarians entered the BSC. "Although we lost the clinical
practice when we went from veterinary to public health, we gained a much
broader perspective and horizon;' Co!. Casey said. Colonel Casey is a
diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. ,

Jl. says She will be the first Brigidier Chief of the BSC. I think that is a

To John Rise: Greetings: I saw your posting and thought I'd respond. From
what I understand, most of the injured dogs were flown to Clark AFB, in the
Philippines. In fact, there was a large cemetery on a hill at the base, where
each dog has its own headstone. Unfortunately, the base closed due to the
Volcano eruption but the cemetery remains, although somewhat overgrown.
Aside from traveling there and looking around, I'm not sure how you'd be
able to find your dog. And of course, perhaps he was rehabbed and returned
to state-side duty. You might want to contact the Security Police Technical
Training Center at Lackland AFB. Most of the MWD training is/was done
there and they might have historical archives for each dog. I do know that,
as a Vet Tech, we assisted on the autopsies (necropsies) and samples of all
dogs were sent to Armed Forces Institute of Technology (AFIT) at either
Brooks AFB or Wright-Patterson AFB (I don't recall exactly). But again, I'd
start with Lackland and go from there. Good luck. There's a couple websites
about Clark and on one of them I found a couple pictures of the Working
Dog Cemetery - I've included the links below. http://www.clarkab.com/ This
is the one that has the pictures of the Canine training areas and the Military
Police Canine Cemetery. Go to The "Photo Essay of Entire Base" section
and then find the "Military Police Canine Cemetery" section. Perhaps that
will at least make you feel a little closer. http://www.clarkab.org/ Good luck.

Hatfield/Henrichson

Greetings, All! Well, as fate would have it, I did have to miss the Kentucky
reunion...I'm sure everybody had a wonderful time and caught up on all the
latest "gossip!" There was just no way we could take a trip at this time...that
drought we've been in for the past year still has a strangle-hold on SW TX
ranch country, and we're spending all of our so-called "farming income" (as
well as much of that "discretionary income" they're always talking about)
trying to keep hay in front of the livestock so they won't starve and Larry
won't have to go the way of many ranchers in this area...they're selling out
and giving up. He's pretty bull-headed about that, and will hang on by the
skin of his teeth until this is over with...you have to admire his tenacity! I'm
with him all the way...I'm not ready to move into the city yet! I'll keep
checking in from time to time, and maybe next year...??? Y'all take care, and
behave yourselves (like THAT'S going to happen!) and if anyone cares to
drop an old vet tech a liine via email, feel free! I'd love to hear from you!

from Bill Britz and John (Schnarr) is sending some that will be posted soon
afterwards. For those of you who haven't attended a reunion yet I would
strongly encourage you to make plans for the next one. Every one I have
attended has been a wonderful experience. It is obvious from the photos
from this, and past reunions, that everyone thoroughly enjoys re- kindling
old friendships. The story-telling is endless. As we get older we get more
polite - "story-telling" used to be BS. Take care.

For those of you who missed the reunion, you missed a good one. The
accommodations at the Drawbridge Inn were first class. RB, Billie and the
rest of the reunion committee really did a nice job finding a place to hold
the reunion. The trips to Newport on the Levee and the Cincinnati Museum
were great fun. Don't forget your military discount, Frank. Thats an inside
joke, you had to be there. For those who went to Wright-Pat to the AF
Museum had a great time. Getting back, was another story. It was nice
seeing old friends as well as meeting new ones, Steve and Lynn, Willard,
Raul and Toni. If I forgot anyone, you know what they say, memory is the

Just a short note to say we can't make the reunion this year. We had to move
out of our apt. a few days ago. They joined the condo craze that has Tucson
in a frenzy. We moved back to our house bought in '75. Son Chris has been
"remodeling" for the past several years. Nothing is finished, so our stuff is
stacked all over. Worst move ever. Meantime we are living in our RV that is
parked on our acre. To add to the fun a few months ago Ellen stepped on
our puppy Jack Russel, then stumbled into our truck tire and dislocated her
shoulder. Surg is scheduled for 17 May. Orthopod says recovery could take
a year. Warm regards to everyone. Have a cool one for me.

Looks like the site does not like special characters. Use your imagination
and insert an apostrophe, or a quotation mark where you see the weird
upside down question marks. Sorry for any confusion...it looked fine on my
end. Later.

Greetings! I wanted to state for the record that I¿m not able to attend the
reunion this year. I resigned my teaching position last May, and was picked
up by the state as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in late Jan, 06. I¿ll
be in a ¿new employee probation¿ status until this fall, and as such, am not
able to take regular vacation days. Soooo, I get to miss another reunion. To
that I say, ¿equine fecal matter!!!¿ I know I pressed for a summer reunion
and I offer a special thanks to the planners for making it happen. Now that
I¿m not locked to the school year, my schedule is more flexible. Oh well,
there¿s always next year. It¿s always good to see the entries on this site, and
I read them on a regular basis. Everybody take care, and have a blast this
June! I¿ll be thinking of (and missing) all of you!

Hey Folks, Just checked in to see what was going on at the web site.
Happily, I saw the entry from Tim McCann. Last time I saw him we were
ducking rockets, having cook outs and burrying canines at Cam Rahn Bay
with Maj Russel, Capt Cardin, CMS Jack Ralston & TSgt Kurt Hahn and a
host of other great guys. Collectively, they helped me get through my first
over seas assignment as a young Sgt. Not a great place to start but a
wonderful bunch of Vet's to serve with. Not sure about the reunion. It will
be the start of hurricane season and all you other folks along/near the gulf
coast know the deal about that. Right now 17 storms are predicted for this
year and that's not counting the tornado's that we also get. Fortunately, last
year Katrina & sisters did not hit us directly but they kept it real interesting.
Mary, congrads. Jack, got your new e-address. Mac, good to see you're alive
& kicking. Phil, how's the wife? Eddie, what happened with you? Kurt,
hope all is well. DC's what's gong on? Tim, hey. JR, still hanging?
Everybody else, best wishes. I'm way behind with my e-mails. Back to the
tax war. Peace.

Charleston AFB, SC and Bien Hoa, RVN. Met a lot of great people, enjoyed
the work. R.B. Griffin & John Toft were inspirations to me, which have

In process of making reservations at Drawbridge Inn. Will by my first
reunion, although I was in the Vet Svc's from 1956 - 1971, I do not
recognize very many of the folks on the member's side. See lots on the
TAPS side, thought I would hit a reunion while still on the right side of
member's list. Any of you old timers recognizing my name, would enjoy
hearing from you (or even if you do not recognize it) would enjoy that also.
My whereabouts chronologically from 1956 was of course Lackland, then
Gunter AFS, Turner AFB, Clark AB, Ashiya AB, Hamilton AFB, Wheelus
AB, Ellsworth AFB, DLIWC, TUSLOG Det 48 (Izmir Turkey) - worked
with and for lots of veterinary personnel during that period. Looking for to
seeing you in Kentucky. Later, Joe Wall

Hello, again... I've been out of touch for awhile. I've "retired" from the
County, got married, moved, and finally have my computer going! I now
live on a Southwest Texas brush-country ranch in a little place called Big
Wells with my husband, 5 dogs, 7 horses, a BUNCH of cattle, and a lot of
deer, turkey, wild hogs, and assorted other wildlife (NO, not THAT kind!) I
kept my last name, simply because it's too much trouble to change
everything at this point in my life! Some of you met Larry when we had the
reunion in San Antonio a couple of years ago. Let me hear from some of
you guys...Dennis, J.D., Donnie...whoever has the time to "chat!" I just saw
that the next reunion will be in Kentucky in June...I'd like to try to make it,
but will have to see how things are going then...we're in a terrible drought
here right now, and finding hay for the livestock has become a
priority...there ISN'T any! If we don't get some rain soon, it'll be disaster for
more than a few ranchers. But, if I can, I'd like to make the trip. Hope to
hear from you. Mary Hatfield-Henrichson.

This time, I'll try to remember to leave the message! The next reunion is
only 90 days away--- please make your reservations as early as possible.
This is a new area to us, and the possibilities for entertainment are endless!
There is Newport on the Levi, the Newport Aquarium, the Cincinnati Reds,
two horse racing tracks operating, NASCAR, golf--and did I mention
Riverboat gambling?! The Cincinnati Zoo is one of the worlds best--and
Wright Pat and the AF Museum is a short drive.

Mike Lemish Wednesday, 2/15/06, 2:39 PM

My name is Mike Lemish and I am the historian for the Vietnam Dog
Handler Association. I'm also the author of "War Dogs: A History of
Loyalty and Heroism". My current project is "Forever Forward: K-9
Operations in Vietnam 1960-1972". Although the Army veterinary activity
in RVN is well documented the USAF veterinary activity is practically
nonexistent. I've not been able to find any historical information of any
significance - just bits and pieces. I do not have an order of battle, command
structure, units in-country, USAF approach to IHS, photos, etc. I've emailed
the website contact but have not received a reply. I do not want the book to
be published having to gloss over the contributions of the USAF Veterinary
Service. Records of activity must be located somewhere although I've run
out of locations and contacts. If you can help out by pointing me in the right
direction or perhaps to members who have been involved in recording the
history of the service it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time
and consideration. Michael Lemish 508-366-0106 Westborough, MA 01581

My first visit to the new website. Very well done. Just scanning the names
was fun. I've been in touch recently with Dave Librande, Rick Langen,
Stephan Calar and Don Butts, and will share the website address with them.
Also recently heard from Roger Milford, whose boat was carried a few
miles from his Biloxi home during Katrinia. Anyone know how to reach
John Priene? I retired in Virginia Beach and took a job with the Navy.
Working hard - even after 6 years - to learn new words ("ladder" vs.
"stairs") and to speak slowly... ;) The history wall at USAFSAM was
completed during my tour there. Invaluable contributions by many. The
"vault" of unused materials includes some historical gems donated by Dr
Mennig regarding the disestablishment (if that's the right word) of the Vet
Corps. Hope you are all well. Bob

Wanted to let any and all friends of Shirley Cutler know of her whereabouts
and present condition. Shirley was an integral part of the USAF Veterinary
Service for many years at Mather AFB and fondly recalls all those with
whom she came to know throughout those years. My wife and I visited
Shirley today at the nursing home where she is now located. She is not
doing very well physically and cannot get out of bed any longer. However,
her mind is as sharp as ever and believe me, she was a pretty sharp lady. I
know she would appreciate a note or call (got her personal phone yesterday)
from anyone who might have known her. Her address: Shirley Cutler,
Roseville Care Center, 1161 Cirby Way, Roseville, CA 95661. Room 109.
Her phone number is (916) 783-2998. If you really want to make someone's

I'm passing on this message which was forwarded to me by Willis Lindauer.
The message came from Jim Thomason with the sad news of the passing of
one of our brethren, SMSgt Carl Robertson. The message is as follows: It is
with an extremely sad heart that I inform you that SMGT Robertson passed
last Wednesday Morning, November 9, 2005. His wife Ruth ask me to let
the two of you know, Willie they said they tried to call you but couldn't ever
get you. Lindy they said they did not have your phone number. I don't know
if you knew or not but he was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. He
broke his arm and they did surgery on it and found the cancer at that time.
He refused to take any kind of treatment and they only gave him about six
months to live. He had sold all his cattle and the farms and bought a house
in Hartville. That did not have and type of visitation or viewing. It was
Robie wish not to. They did have a private memorial service . I went up
there but did not get there in time for the service. Hope the two of you are
doing well. As for me, I finally retired two and a half months ago. Plan on it
being for good this time. Take care and let me hear from you. Jim

Thank the fellow that gave the information that Rex Evans is still alive. I
was stationed at Pleiku RVN from Jan to Jul 70. Pleiku was closing down
and I was transferred to Phan Rang Jul70 to Jan71. I replaced Rex there.
When I was at Phang Rang I had a Staff Sgt who was an outstanding person
by the name of Don Shiotsugu. Later inl972 I was stationed at Misawa AB,
Japan and while there Rex was assigned to the Hospital and was the
SgtMajor.(1974?) We had a lot of fun.

Here is a note I just received from Keith Thigpen concerning Rex Evans
(alive & well in Dadeville, AL). Keith I hope you don't mind that I put this
out to share with folks. Just read your post about Rex Evans: Went to
Whitepages.com and there he was at 256 825-7377 Dadeville, AL. Fit as a
fiddle and shooting about an 8 handicap he said. He and I were together at
Maxwell AFB 71-72-73. He switched over to admin and became the 1st Sgt
and later was SgtMaj of the hospital in Misawa. We had a good long chat.
When I made major he and some more NCOs took me to the NCO club and
I couldn't buy the first round. They just woudn't let me buy one. I still
remember that. He is a fine man and I think a lot of him. Prior to him MSgt
Marchesi was the NCOIC and then Rex took over. Rex went to being 1st
Sgt and a Tsgt Dove took over as NCOIC. Both of them fine people but I
didn't try to stop their move. It was what they wanted to do and why should
I stop them. I tried to help them as much as I could. Any way just thought I
would let you know he is alive and doing just fine. Thigpen

Several of us are wondering about the whereabouts of Rex Evans. He
served as an Instructor at the School in the mid to late 60's and showed up at
Phan Rang AB in RVN a month or so before I left there in Jan 1970. Ted
Hodge thinks Rex may have passed away. If anyone has any info on him

jeep doing facility inspections, taking care of the 90 plus military working
dogs, etc. I don't remember Don Shiotsugu being there unless he came after

three sections of wall dedicated to the Veterinary Service. It's a very

was buried at the Riverside National Cemetery on 07 Feb 05 with full

pneumonia. It is with a great deal of sadness that I relate this to you all
because the Vet Corps was his "life" for so long. To the Aftosos in the Vet
Corps, Herb has said, "Adios amigos, Hasta luego." He is survived by his

Letting you know we're alive and well in East Texas. I'm sorry to say I can't
attend the reunion (it conflicts with spring assessments), but I'll definitely
be thinking of you all. Life as a teacher is different than I expected, and
special education is especially challenging. Oh well, I guess dealing with
ornery, stubborn food facility managers (and others) while on active duty
helped prepare me for my second career. Ha! Please, no offense meant to
any facility managers who may be reading. By the way, has there ever been
any consideration for having our reunion during the summer? Just a

We had a very unexpected call last evening from Ms. Shirley B. Cutler, a
long-time and most-dedicated civil servant at USAF Hospital Mather;
serving in both Medical Records &, then, the Veterinary Service office. She
was the secretary at USAF Mather Veterinary Svcs during my ¿76-`80
tenure there. She was originally from Canada; moved to Sacramento- area
during WW II; lost her husband early & unexpectedly; and then began work
at Mather AFB. For the past few years she has been back in Canada, as
primary care-giver for her mom, who died in May @ age 94. Shirley is now
very ill w/a rare & incurable autoimmune dermatologic disease; her skin is
being rejected. She is hoping to soon be air-evacuated to Sacramento, to live
out her remaining days ¿ first is doubtful, & she probably doesn¿t have
much time remaining. Should you wish to send a card, or speak with her, the
address & cell phone # follow: Shirley B. Cutler Mt. Baker Care Center,

I was saddened to read in our local newspaper that Chief Master Sergeant
(ret) Harold ("Joe") Cotten died on Tuesday, 14 Sep 04, at his home in New
Baden, IL. He was 69. Joe served 28 years in the USAF, retiring in 1984.
We all respected him highly, and remember him as one of the finest Chiefs
in the Veterinary Service. He is survived by his lovely wife, Pong Sue, who
operates a bridal shop in New Baden. I will send the entire obituary to our
web site manager later today. Services will be held in the New Baden
Methodist Church at 11 on Saturday, 18 Sep 04. Friends may call after 4

appropriate remarks I made to him and Col. Pace when my request to be

My sincere thanks to Larry Kerkow for having the USAF Veterinary
Service training film made into a DVD. This film was given to me in
1980 and, fortunately, I kept it all these years. I'm amazed at how well the
DVD turned-out especially considering the age of the film. The DVD can
be obtained from Larry for small fee and it is definitely a valuable record
of veterinary service USAF history. The photos of the San Antonio
meeting are excellent. Sorry I was unable to attend---maybe next year.

and missed the ones that didn't show up. For those of you who retired in
the 50's, 60's and 70's, you all paved the way for those who followed. All
we had to do to be successful in life, was to hang on to your coattail.

Thanks! Another great time with some of the finest people. I got another
chance to renew old (some very old) friendships and without this reunion
and the interest people have for being there, the bulk of my adult life
would only be my memory. It was fun hanging out with E.Lee Menning
and Dr VanSickle for an evening. I have not seen either of them for over
thirty five years. Likewise for Gary and Charlotte Davis. Meeting Joe
West, who I knew by reputation and later found out was one of my wife's
instructors at Mississippi State. A special thanks to R.B., Frank, Tony and
Bob, and I'm sure others for the dedication to keeping us together. To
Larry Kerkow for getting us onto a very nice golf course replete with
refreshments. And to Bill Armitage for the rides and the two dollar
donation. Let's do this again. If you come through Meridian, give me a
call. If I come to get you, please wear a name tag. My memory is good,
just real short. Yours in Veterinariness, Tim

MM TRAINING FILM THAT HAD BEEN SAFELY STORED ALL
THESE YEARS. YOU PROBABLY KNOW THE MANY
VETERINARY PERSONNEL INSTRUCTORS, INSPECTORS AND
CLINICIANS WHO WERE ENVOLVED DURING FILM
PRODUCTION. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR ADVICE AND

Harry White Saturday, 3/6/04, 12:58 PM

The USS John F. Kennedy Carrier Strike Group (CSG) will conduct
exercises in the Gulf of Mexico beginning 6 March. This Composite
Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) began off the East Coast on 21
February. During the exercise, the USS John F. Kennedy will conduct
distinguished visitor embarks to the ship to demonstrate the awesome
capability of the last non-nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the naval
inventory. During this exercise, the John F. Kennedy will pay a port call
to NAS Pensacola during the period 17-20 March. The JFK will be open
for public visitation on 18 and 19 March. This is the first time since 9/11
that a naval vessel has been open to public visitation. Naval Air Station
Pensacola Public Affairs Officer, Harry White, CMSGT, USAF (Ret),
will lead the effort to get maximimun DV visitation while the JFK
operates at sea, as well as, coordinating all public visitation while pier
side NAS Pensacola. Chief White, a former USAF Veterinary Services
Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Command Veterinarian, USAFE, and
Chief, USAF Veterinary Services, Brooks AFB, TX, was required to
cancel plans to attend the USAF Veterinary Service's 4th reunion to
execute dutied associated with the visit of the JFK. Chief White regrets he
will miss the reunion, but support of this great Country's war effort far
exceeds any personal agenda. After nearly 40 years serving this great
nation is still an honor and a priviledge.

Dear Friends: Gwen and I had really looked forward to attending this
year's reunion in San Antonio. We had planned an additional week to 10
days to tour parts of Texas. Our plans took a big blow in early December.
Gwen was diagnosed with breast cancer. We wnt to a surgeon here who
said mastectomy. We went to a radiology clinic here and they said no
reason for surgery, just radiation. We went to Moffitt Cancer Center in
Tampa (one of the top 5 in the US for breast cancer) and they said slow
down. She had surgery to remove tissue around the site of the lesion on
February 20. She has to go back this week for follow up after the surgery
and to schedule radiation. That means that we definitely won't be able to
make the reunion. They feel as certain as is possible that they got
everything and tht the radiation will prevent recurrence. That will
probably start about the end of March and will run Monday through
Friday for six or seven weeks. We feel that we have been blessed and the
prayers of hundreds of people have carried us through it. We look forward
to seeing all of you next yaer. Have a great time! Bill

We received this from David Brooks concerning the passing of
his father, Frank Brooks (Col., USAF, Retired). Ken From:
frank Brooks [mailto:frankbrook@comcast.net] Subject: Frank
T. Brooks It is with great sadness that I write to inform all of
you that my father, Frank Brooks, passed away November 3
after a brief struggle with kidney cancer. I am sending this
message out to mostly the same list that Dad used to send out
the news of his diagnosis a few short weeks ago. If there are
any other friends of Dad's to which any of you believe the
news should be passed along that are not listed on the
addressee list, I would greatly appreciate it if you could
forward this message. My Dad and my Mom very much
appreciated the large number of messages of support and
encouragement that Dad received from his friends after news
of his illness went around. He was not around for long after his
illness was diagnosed, but it was a great comfort to hear from
so many friends in that short time. The services for Dad will be
held at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, Tennessee on Thursday,
November 6. We will receive friends at 6:00 PM and the
funeral service will be immediately afterward at 7:30 PM. The
burial will be the following day, Friday, November 7, at 1:00
PM at Fairview Cemetery in Tazewell, Tennessee. Thank you
very much. Sincerely, David Brooks

work goes into these things, and I'm just glad there's a bunch

desire to help this group stick together. You deserve all kinds
of accolades for your efforts! God Bless! Mary Hatfield

Couldn't make the last two reunions, but hope to make San
Antonio. Vet Appr. class 55-A, 70 School in l963. Served
about l;0 of 22 years in England, Wales, and Ireland with TDY
to Scotland. Was in Ireland with Mel Struckhoff (RIP) and
turned our rented apartment over to him when we rotated. Mel
always said it was haunted. I,m a novice on the computer, and
habitually mess up, but feel free to drop a line at any time. I
love to hear from old friends.

Reunion pictures looked great. Sorry we were not able to make
it. Kathy - my wife suffered from kidney failure this past May-
June and has "recovered" but is on dialysis three times a week.
She is doing wonderful all considered - a true warrior & child
of God! If you were to meet her & some of you have - you
would never know that she was almost gone a few months ago
because she has come back so strong & determined! She is
going to her first three hour appointment with the Banner
Samaritan Transplant Team in Phoenix on November 4th
(Election Day) She has been deemed a good candidate so
please keep her in your prayers. Greetings to all who I have
known & served with and to most all of you whose names I
recognize from my Vet Services years of 1966 thru 1984. Lord
Bless you all. Kathy & I will do our best to make it to San
Antonio. March 7-9, 2004 is not that far off!! Phil Coningford

Reunion pix are GREAT! Sorry I had to miss. As a 2nd year
teacher, I don't have much vacation time accrued, plus the
timing (Sept) didn't work. Hope to attend one of these years. I
really enjoy watching this site. I'm not near a base (NE Texas,

WE THINK THE RENO/SPARKS REUNION WAS THE
GREATEST. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAD A HAND IN
ASSURING US A GOOD TIME. WE LOOK FORWARD TO
DOING IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR. THAT IS, IF IT IS
WITHIN DRIVING DISTANCE. THAT AIRPORT

SUPER SENIORS. GEES, WE PACK OUR BAGS TO
PRESERVE SOME CLOTHING CREASES AND BIG
PAWS RUMAGE THROUGH THE CONTENTS LIKE
THEY WERE LOOKING FOR A BONE. THANKS FOR
THE KIND WORDS YOU GAVE ME TO PASS ON TO
THOMAS P. GRIFFIN. YOUR GREETINGS AND
MESSAGES WERE FORWARDED AND GREATFULLY
RECEIVED. ADDITIONAL COPIES OF HIS BOOK "FAST

CHERISHED MOST ABOUT THE VETERINARY

YOU'RE IT. AS DR. MENNING COMMENTED EARLIER,
WE ALSO LEFT THE CASINO AHEAD OF THE GAME.
AND FURTHER, DID WELL AT THE AIRPORT. MY
THREE SILVER DOLLARS NETTED ME $40 AND JESS

Note the change of e-mail address. Marina and I are ready for
the reunion. Reservations made and horses harnessed. We will
be driving to Reno. Arriving sometime on the 7th. Did I see
that Mike Mattingly is involved in the golf tournament? I am
not sure about seeing Mike again, but I certainly hope Donna
will be there. I still have the clubs he made for me (and the
Driver Harry White slammed the head off of the first time I let
him "try" them! The head went further than the ball!) Don't get
much time to use them these days, but they are still good
looking clubs. Yes, Mike put the head back on the Driver, and
I never let Harry touch them again! If Dave Cardin is
expecting all of his "friends" to buy him a drink...he is going to
be mighty thirsty at the end of the evening! Looking forward

Mary E. Hatfield Wednesday, 7/30/03, 5:32 PM

Hi, Guys and Gals, Been a few weeks since I checked in. I see
some changes have been made...looks great! I know a lot of
you are getting ready for the reunion, but once again I won't be
able to make it as it conflicts with our fall training conference
for Veterans Service Officers. (They're actually on slightly
different dates, but I'm so swamped with work I can't afford to
be gone two weeks in a row!) So I'll just have to live it
vicariously through the notes y'all post in this Guest Book.
Make 'em good! Have lots of fun! I agree 100% with the
sentiments of those who commented about Bob Hope's
passing. I feel as I've lost a relative! What's a holiday season
without a Bob Hope Christmas Special USO Tour? What a
great guy, a wonderful comedian, and you know, he didn't
have to tell off-color jokes to get laughs. A real piece of
Americana, an entertainment icon, has left us, and he'll be
missed by many, especially service men and women.
Godspeed, Mr. Hope! As for me, slowed down much yet. Still
have over a dozen horses and a 50-acre horse ranch, plus my
job. Am engaged to a rancher from deep South Texas...we're
putting off making it official to see what Congress does with
concurrent receipt and DIC for widows remarrying over 55, as
both of those issues affect me. I hear bits and pieces of "inside
info" in my capacity as county service officer, but I'm still very
skeptical that we'll see much improvement over the current
CRSC "deal" that was passed this year. (By the way, have all
you 20-year retirees who have a 60% or more VA-rated
disability that can be related to combat, combat training
exercises, hazardous duty, Agent Orange, etc, etc., filed for
your Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) yet?
Better get on it! The often-overlooked cases I'm seeing are
veterans who were in Vietnam who now have diabetes, which
is Agent Orange related and considered compensable under the
CRSC criteria. When in doubt, FILE! If any of you have any
questions, you can email me, or check with you local veteran
service officer, VA Regional Office, or military installation for
more information. Signing off for now. Be checking in later.

I got a new computer and lost all my email addresses in the
change over ... even lost this web site. Thanks Tony for
emailing me and including the web site address. Both Judy and
I are planning to attend the reunion ... have just procrastinated
in making reservations. Hope to see a bunch of you there...

Got all my obligations out of the way and am cleared for take-
off to the reunion. Am working with Mike Mattingly on golf
so, if interested, let me know. Only interest right now is from
Jack Moye and he can not make it. Any one from the very
southeastern US looking for a ride, let me know. Looking
forward to seeing everyone. Harry

Hello from San Diego, We have res. at the campground on the
river. plan to make SPARKS in Nev. Looking forward to
seeing everyone again from last year, and new folks who were
no shows last year. Hope the crowd is bigger than it appears
now, and David I think we should review who owes what
drinks. I wouldn't share this with everyone, so just between us
who was the no-show wedding party member at my wedding?

great job. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. Sure wish I
could at the reunion. However I just started a new job about a

Just a quick note prompted by the previous one. We now live
a few short miles from Westover Air Reserve Base (the
largest AF reserve base) and, since the ramp-up of events in
the middle east, this has been a very busy base. We've had 15-
25 C-5's along with other aircraft on the base in a single day
and, although the surrounding events (war) are never
something someone wants, hearing the increased air traffic
flying overhead and hearing engine run-ups, has "stirred the
blood". God speed to our troops and Happy Easter to all. DR

Hope everyone is doing well. Greetings to all out there who I
had the privilege of working with from 1966 to 1987 - and to
those I did not get to work with. Arizona is beautiful in the
spring as many of you living here know. Kathy & I live one
mile east of the north south runways at Luke AFB and I love
watching the jets take off at night on their training missions.
Would love to visit with anyone passing through, so please
contact us. Hope to see everyone in Reno We just bought our
first home computer so I now have an additional e-mail
address: pconingford@cox.net. Take care & may God bless &
keep everyone safe in the palm of his hand.
