Work permits for Canadian citizens
Sweden has signed an agreement with Canada on the exchange of young workers – the CanadaSweden Youth Exchange programme. The agreement entitles young people who are citizens of Canada to a Swedish work and residence permit for a period of one year. Permits are not tied to a specific employer or place. Similarly, young Swedes may also quality for a Canadian work permit within the framework of the exchange programme.
What are the requirements? You must − be a Canadian citizen. − be between 18 and 30 when you apply for your permit. − have a valid passport. − enclose two passport photos with your − application. − show that you have sufficient money to support yourself until you find work.
fee when submitting your application to the embassy or consulate.
Who decides whether I qualify for a permit? Decisions on work and residence permits are made by the Swedish Migration Board. Their decision is sent to the embassy or consulate where you submitted your application. For how long time will the permit remain valid? You can receive a permit for a maximum of 12 months. You can only receive a permit once. Appeal If the Migration Board decides not to grant you a residence permit you can appeal against the decision within three weeks of the date on which you received the decision. You send the appeal to the Migration Board, which will go through your case once again. If the Board stands by its rejection decision, your appeal will pass to the Migration Court at one of the three county administrative courts in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Which court will hear your appeal depends on which permit unit rejected your application. If you have granted a person in Sweden a power of attorney and thus the right to represent you, he or she can prepare the appeal and send it in. Points to remember As you’ll be living in Sweden for a limited period only, you won’t enjoy the same entitlement to social benefits as those who are permanent residents. It is therefore important that you have sufficient insurance to cover your costs if, for example, you should fall ill. Neither the Swedish embassy or consulates, nor any other Swedish authority can help you find work in Sweden. You must yourself get in touch with potential employers.
You do not need to show that you have got a job when you make your application.
Where do I apply? You apply for work and residence permits at the Swedish embassy in Ottawa or at any of the Swedish consulates in Canada. If you are staying in another country, you can submit your application to the Swedish embassy or consulate in that country. You should submit your application at least four weeks before you expect to enter Sweden. Your permits must be ready and have been entered in your passport before you leave for Sweden. What does it cost? Permit applications cost the equivalent of SEK 1,000. If your application is rejected, the money will not be returned. You must pay the application
