Term "sapropel" means "putrid slime", it was proposed by Lautenberg in 1901 and by G. Potogne in
1904 irrespectively. Term as Gyttia may occur, but it didn’t expand through the scientific literature. In
therapeutic muds group they are consolidated under common name peloids, which means slimes.

Sapropel is bottom sediments of freshwater basins, originated as a result of oxygenless decaying of
faded aquatic vegetation, life forms reminders and soil pieces drifted by water.

Sapropel relates to renewable natural resources and is a unique natural organic feedstock. Its
sediments are typical only for freshwater basins. Its accumulation processes continue nowadays and
moreover for majority of water basins it is a progressive character. Sapropel’s chemical compound and
peculiarities of different minefields are significantly different and defined by its formation conditions
and by lakes’ flora and fauna. Three main components are detached in sapropel: water (from 60 to
97%), ash part (sand, loam, carbonates, phosphates silica and iron compounds, etc.) and organic
compound of very complicated and non-uniform structure (not less than 15%). In general sapropel is
composed by water, organic and non-organic parts. Depending on mineral part quantitative content
sapropel is differentiated as organic, where non-organic (ash) part composes less than 30% in-
equivalent of dry substance and multi-ashes sapropel as a result of various mineral compounds
domination. The last are subdivided for carbonates (СаО), silica (SiO2) and mixed, containing
approximately equal parts of SiO2 and СаО. Besides silica and calcium mineral part of sapropel may
contain compounds of iron, magnesium, potassium, aluminium, sulphur, phosphorous and other
elements. Sapropel’s mineral part contains great part of microelements as Со, Мn, Сu, В, Zn, I, Вг,
Мо, Cr, Ве, Ni, Аg, Sn, Рb, Sr, Тi, which are significant for sapropel valuation as fertilizers,
therapeutic agents, supplements for farm livestock.

The most valuable part of sapropel is biologically active substances and a set of microelements, which
positively influence on people, animals and plants soundness. It contains albumen, fats, protein,
vitamins, hormones, carotenoids, antioxidants, growth promotants and a range of other substances.
These substances set and their concentration is stipulated by sapropel’s sediment conditions, lakes’
flora and fauna composition, biochemical zone and bedding deepness. Lack of oxygen and
insignificant temperature variations create specific conditions for bottom sediments, where all alive

                                       SAPROPEL BASED FERTILIZER

                                       Sapropel fertilizers are produced of freshwater basins’ bottom

                                       Sapropel’s mineral part representing the major part of sapropel

    Sapropel is not flammable, combustible or explosive under normal conditions as it contains 40-60%
    moisture. However in the event of drying out to less than 20% moisture and in contact with other
    burning matter it will burn slowly and emit a tarry smoke. The smoke may be irritating to the eyes,
    nasal passages and lungs.

    Sapropel is not known to cause any deleterious effect to health, whether by eye contact, skin contact,
    ingestion or aggravation of existing medical conditions.

Feeding sapropel is useful supplement for animals and poultry, it contains a set of biologically active
substances increasing pigs, cattle stock and poultry’s productivity, and it improves resistance to
diseases of different kinds.
Feeding sapropel was designed as a supplement for all kinds of animals and poultry’s diet naturally
with humidity not more than 65%.
Dry feeding sapropel may be used in compound feed industry for all kinds of combined feed
production as an organic and mineral supplement (premix) and as filler for vitamin premixes.

Our animals are cared by the nature. During millenniums it has been created unique supplementary
fertilizer containing not only all necessary nourishments, but also healing components normalizing
metabolic activity, reproductive and immunoresistance functions. At all times such natural formations
as sapropel, lignum fossile, bentonite clays and malmstone have been used for animals with a
preventive goal. Sapropel is used as a supplement not only for feeding stuff reduction, but also for the
purpose of diet beneficiation with mineral materials, amino acids, vitamins, and biologically active
materials. Sapropel represents valuable vitamin and
mineral supplement.

Replacement of sapropel’s OR part provides nutrient
budget cheapening for 7 - 10% and in case of 10%
replacement provides poultry broiler meat production

Sapropel usage efficiency at broiler-chicken feeding depends on feeding method (feed to appetite, OR
part replacement, feed mix applicator), on its dosage added into ration and on sapropel humidity.
Sapropel usage influences on feed mix eatability, digestibility and nutrition, growth rate, meat
productivity and poultry meat production economic indicators. Sapropel added in broiler diet decreases
feedstuff general cost for 7,24 - 17,74 % in experimental groups vs. control groups.

Also experiments were performed with line C “Brown Loman” cross laying hens. One control and two
experimental groups of laying hens were created by adding of 5,10, 15 % of sapropel supplement into
ration replacing compound feed. Sapropel added in laying hens’ ration increased eggs persistence for
3-6%, eggs quality (vitamins and carotinoids containment, shell-thickness), hatching eggs yields.

According to conducted researches sapropel added in poultry’s ration promotes chicken growth rate
and their vital capacity, eggs quality increasing and depending on using ration structure saves
compound feed-stuff and decreases product general costs. Sapropel usage in poultry nutrition
according ZOSP is attached.

Usage of sapropel vitamin feed supplements in cattle-breeding and pig-breeding agricultural sectors
during winter period allows considerable costs savings required for livestock nursing and preservation.

The following results can be achieved during sapropel usage in cattle and poultry’s ration:

Sapropel essence is a biologically active preparation for internal and external usage purposely to treat
chronic inflammable livestock diseases (arthronosos, gynecology, gastric ulcer, gastritis, duodenum
ulcer, etc.) and activate weakened organism immunity, especially for youngsters.

Sapropel essence is related to non-specific doping preparation of natural origin; it involves energetic
and bacteriostatic action. It was produced by means of harmless organic extraction in applied dosages
of extragent sapropel extracted from Omsk region lakes. It contains water and alcohol-soluble mineral
and organic materials.

                                 Sapropel essence biological features

Sapropel essence is biologically active materials exert local and general influence on animals’
organism because of vitamins (Е, В12) containing in it, irreplaceable amino acids set, minerals, humic
acids and other biologically active materials originated in sapropel by anaerobic autolythis of organic

1. Usage basis.
Sapropel essence promotes uterus and endometrium mucous coat fast recovery after expulsion of fetus.

activation. Sapropel essence’s biological action is conditioned by biologically active materials
contained in it. Among them are anaerobic hydrolyze products of limnoplankton, ichthyol-like
materials, vitamins, microelements salts, ferments and hormones exhibiting their features as
nonspecific doping with bacteriostatic properties. Sapropel essence kills postpartum hypoglycemic
state because of its nutritional properties equal to 20% of dextrose solution.

1. Coal tar-like agents
In specific concentrations coil tars are able to invoke either catheresis to mucous coats or stimulate
their regeneration (recovery). At that coal tars always restrain disease-causing microorganisms’

For cows at endometritis prevention 300-500 ml of the preparation is injected intrauterinal once after
6-12 hours since calving depending on expulsion of afterbirth. Before injection the preparation should
be heated to body temperature. As a rule there is no need to inject the preparation once more. Animals
tolerate the preparation easily; it does not cause any by-effects. Uterus hypersthenia does not require
appliance of preparations intensifying uterus involution after injection.

                                            Mud therapy
This treatment method is based on appliance of mineral and organic origin muds and mud-like
materials (clay, etc.). Their therapeutic effect is stipulated by temperature and mechanic factors
influence, natural physical features and chemical composition.

The treatment is conducted mainly at resorts located nearby therapeutic muds minefields, although the
usage of imported muds outside resorts is widely spread. Following are the most frequently used in our
country: hydrosulphuric silt muds (bottom sediments of saline ponds), sapropels (bottom sediments of
sweet ponds), decomposed mineralized and sweetwater lignum fossile, clay silts, hydrothermal muds
(clay formation, originated in areas of dynamic volcanic activity), mount therapeutic muds (semiliquid
uliginous mass, originated as a result of rocks destruction and cropping up by Earth crust cracks at
gas/oil bearing regions).

Therapeutic muds are composed of mud solution, skeleton and so called colloid complex. Different
muds have different mineral and organic materials in mud water solution.

Mud treatment stimulates metabolism, promotes inflammatory tissues dispersion. Improving
lymphotrophy it causes scars softening, accelerates the bones accretion process after fracture,
decreases stiffness and increases joint range of motions, improves adrenal bodies activity. Therapeutic
mud has antimicrobic effect: enclosed to skin or mucous coat it absorbs bacterium on surface;
antibiotic-like agents occur in mud.

Mud baths and applications are used as procedures. The most widely spread is local (partial)
applications when mud of relatively stiff consistency is applied on any part of a body. Organism
response in this case is stipulated not only by mud temperature and physiological and chemical
features but also the area of mud application, place of application, for example on reflexogenic zones
(“collar” and “bikini” areas, some areas of upper and lower limbs).

Applications of bigger areas influence on organism more intensively.

In gynecologic practice mud applications on stomach and pelvis areas (so called “semi-bikini” or
“bikini”) are often combined with mud vulval pads which can be prescribed as a separate procedure.
At chronic inflammatory diseases of straight intestine (proctitis, periproctitis) and male organs
inflammation (prostatitis, epididymitis, funiculitis), and also for female organs diseases, sometimes for
intestinal tract diseases (e.g. irritable colon) mud pads into straight intestine can be prescribed.

There are methods of simultaneous influence on organism by therapeutic mud and current electricity.
Such methods include electrotype mud cure, electrophoresis of mud solution, mud cure combined with
inductothermy, etc. These procedures influence on organism in complicated way stipulated by
therapeutic mud and current electricity influence on skin receptors and therapeutic chemically active
elements contained in mud and entering into patient’s organism.

It is not recommended to combine mud cure and hydrotherapeutic, luminance, solar and other

Counter-indications to mud therapy are acute and chronic inflammable processes on exacerbation
stage, cancerous and innocent neoformations, ovaries disfunction with increased formation of female
sex hormones (if necessary applications placed on small pelvis area or nearby), TB, some heart-
vascular system diseases (expressed atherosclerosis, hypertensive disease of II and III stage, aortic or
heart aneurysm, blood circulation disorder of ІІ-ІІІ stage, varicose veins), tendency to repeated
bleeding, kidneys’ diseases, thyrotoxicosis, infectious diseases including venereal at acute and
infetious stages, pronounced abrosia. Mud therapy is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy of
more than 5 month term.

SAPROPEL – medical and cosmetic sapropel mud of Volovoe lake in Kiev region.

Infusive force of nature is contained in therapeutic muds. Yet ancient Egyptians used mud’s healing
properties for cure, cosmetic purposes and for organism youth renewal. Recently muds of the Dead
Sea, Spain and Hungary became very popular. However not all have an opportunity to recover their
health not only at international but also at local resorts.

Sapropel muds composition is complicated. Its basis is composed of calcium, magnesium, ferrum,
zinc, selenium and manganese salines; aluminium and silicium colloidal complexes, up to 50
microelements, amino acids, eicosanoic acids, phospholipids, groups of B, A, D, E vitamins, folic acid,
antioxidants, hormons-like agents, antibiotic-like agents, microorganisms physiological group,
carotenoids, bitumens, lignin, cellulose, phenolics and flavonoids. Sapropel acid-base balance (PH)
level is close to human ideal PH (5.5 . 6.05).

Sapropel mud is fine mass with particulates size up to 25 micron, which allows them to penetrate
deeply through skin sweat and oil glands. Optimal interchangeable process is taken place: an organism
ingests sapropel healing properties returning accumulated toxins and poisons often appearing as a
reason of various skin and allergic diseases. Besides chemical and thermal influence factor also there is

- Applications.
Sapropel is heated on “waterbath” up to 37-40°С and track on problem areas with layer up to 2mm for
10-20 min. After procedure completion sapropel is washed off with warm water. Skin area is blotted
with towel and a person should rest for 20-30 min. Purposely to enforce an effect fir balsam is wormed
into skin and wrap this area in towel. Course consists of 15-20 procedures daily or every other day.

- "Thermal" applications.
Sapropel is heated on “waterbath” up to 42-45 °С. Prescribed for solid psoriatic plaques, for season
aggravations prevention during disease remission and after medicamental reduction of acute displays.
The same method as for simple applications is used.

- Compresses.
Mud is applied on problem areas (spinal column, chest, joints, etc.). Sapropel is heated on “waterbath”
up to 40-42°С. Applied on body of 0,5 cm thick, polyethylene foil or cereous paper is placed above,
and then it is wrapped in terry towel or blanket and remained for 30-60 minutes. After the procedure
sapropel remains are washed off with warm water and relax for 30-40 minutes. Purposely to enforce an
effect fir balsam is wormed into skin and wrap this area in towel. Course consists of 15-20 procedures
daily or every other day.
- Bath.
Used for hands and feet articulations. Sapropel heated on “waterbath” (to 37-40С) is placed in plastic
bags (or plastic gloves) where hands or feet are placed. Then hands or feet (in bags or gloves) are
placed in warm water (1:50°С) for 30 minutes. Course consists of 10-15 procedures daily or every
other day. After the procedure sapropel remains are washed off with warm water. Purposely to enforce
an effect fir balsam is wormed into skin. Sapropel capacity per 1 procedure is 100-200 ml.

- Sapropel bath.
For 100 l of water 100 ml of sapropel are used, water temperature is 36-37°С. Time 10-15 minutes. Do
not dip heart area into the water! Course consists of 10-12 procedures daily or every other day.
Relaxation after bath is necessary, better lie down for 30-40 minutes.

- Dry skin mask.
Sapropel is heated on “waterbath” up to 37-40°С and 2mm layer is applied on cleaned face with soft
brush for 15 minutes. Mask should be moistened with water regularly preventing its thorough drying.
Then mask should be washed off with warm water and apply dry skin cream. Apply mask two or three
times per week.

- Oily skin mask
Sapropel is heated on “waterbath” up to 37-40°С and 2mm layer is applied on cleaned face with soft
brush for 20-25 minutes. Since the mask is dry it should be washed off with water and oily skin cream
should be applied.

- Seborrhea and dandruff.
For seborrhea and dandruff heated to 37°С sapropel is applied on scalp with soft brush between hair
locks. Head should be wrapped in towel for 20-25 minutes. Then sapropel should be washed off with
warm water and shampoo. Course consists of 15-20 procedures daily or every other day.

- Sapropel can be used in sauna or in steam bath for organism recovery.
2mm of mud should be applied on steamed face and body and stay in anteroom for 10-15 minutes.
Sapropel should be washed off without soap and then visit sweating-room. After sweating-room take
warm shower, then relaxation for 40-60 minutes. Course consists of 15-20 procedures daily or every
other day.

- Anticellulite effect.
In sauna (or after hot bath) 2mm of sapropel (37-39°С) should be applied on steam cleaned body
(problem areas) with soft brush. Wrap in with polyethylene foil and cover with warm blanket for 30-60
min (greenhouse effect is created!). After the procedure sapropel is washed off with warm water and
anticellulite cream or gel is applied on skin. During the procedure for water exchange regulation and
sweat secretion increase light tea or herbal tea is recommended (4-5 warm or hot tea cups). Course

Oil absorbents usage is similar to other powder absorbents usage. During oil pollution liquidation at
water surface first of all spilled crude oil or oil products is liquidated by slick bars, which is necessary

means or manually till oil film complete absorption and floating aggregate formation. After that slick
