More Diverse and Equitable Classroom Library Bibliography

This list of books is just one step in creating what Rudine Sims and Masha Rudman call
mirrors, windows, and doors for the students in our classrooms. By the age of five, the
average child in our country has watched 5,000 hours of television and been
bombarded with negative imagery and ideologies about non-mainstream groups in
society. All students need to see themselves validated in the classroom curriculum and
to authentically see and experience the lives of others. This list is a jump start!

To create this list, we began with a few favorites, then turned to the lists of award-
winning books from the American Library Association and other groups, as well as
suggestions from experts such as Debbie Reese (American Indians in Children's
Literature), Lyn Miller-Lachmann (editor of Multicultural Review), and Donnarae
MacCann (Social Responsibility in Librarianship: Essays in Equality and The Black
Experience in Books for Children).

You will notice that some sections contain many books, while other sections have just a
few. In some cases, we've listed only a few books because we know that your school
librarian can point you to many more (folktales, for example). In other cases, only a
few books are listed because there is a paucity of books for or about nondominant
groups (mysteries, for example, have predominantly white characters).

Some of these books are fun quick reads for independent reading, while others are
thoughtful and thought-provoking books for literature circles or whole class study.
Many will stand the test of time, while others may well be replaced when something
better is published.

You may also notice that we haven't included the many excellent books that focus on
the Holocaust and we've included only a few of the many on the Civil Rights Movement
and slavery. These parts of the Jewish and African American experience tend to be
well-represented in our district libraries. However, to go back to our mirrors, windows,
and doors metaphor, Jewish and African American children have a need to see a
reflection of the entirety of their heritage, including rich cultural traditions that go
beyond the Holocaust, slavery, and Civil Rights. Other children have a need to look into
the everyday lives of African American and Jewish children, and to step into those
lives for the length of a book.

Use these suggestions, but also go on to to find other books. Be careful not to assume
that a book is excellent because of the author or illustrator. Be critical! Use the
Identifying Bias Checklist rubric to assist you in evaluating books. This work is essential
to help create a more just and equitable classroom.
