Demographic - Overview


 Oakland County has experienced very modest
  population growth (0.6%) since 2000.
 Oakland County is one of the highest educated
  counties in the state, with 41.4% of residents having
  a bachelor’s degree or higher.
 Unemployment in Oakland County doubled
  between 2000 and 2002, remained stable from
  2003 through mid 2008 and has since spiked
  through July 2009.
 Persons in poverty have increased 55% from
  65,478 in 2000 to an estimated 101,758 in 2008.

Demographic - Overview


 Net housing units in Oakland County have
  decreased significantly over the past decade.
 The divorce rate has significantly declined since
  1998 for Oakland County.
 Approximately 100 infants die each year in Oakland
  County, the infant death rate has remained stable.
 Maternal risk factors for infant death are under
  reported for Oakland County.

Demographic - Population

 Population density is highest along the I-75
  and I-696 corridors in the Southeast 36
  square miles of the County.
 Leading causes of death include heart
  disease, cancer, and chronic lower
  respiratory disease.
 Leading causes of death for children age 19
  and younger include accidents, homicide,
  cancer and suicide.

 There were 194,255 K-12 Students in Oakland County
  during 2008.
 Graduation rates ranged from 25% to 97% in 2008.
 Drop out rates ranged from less than 1% to 49%
  during 2008.
 Eligibility for free and reduced price lunches:
  26.4% of K-12th grade students, ranging from to 90.1% to 3.8%;
  70.2% of academy students, ranging from 98.8% to 16.0%;
  4.4% of adult students with a range of 20.6% to 0.0%; and
  26.1% of early childhood enrollees with a range of 100.0% to 0.0%.

      Demographics - Unemployment

           Oakland County is coming off two years of the
            largest job loss in its recorded history, but now
            seeing dramatically slowing declines.
           Employment of over 36,000 auto manufacturing
            workers in 1990 was cut in half by 2009.
           2008 unemployment rate was 7.1% in Oakland
            County, lower than the state rate of 8.4%.

       Demographics – Poverty


          There are an estimated 30,000 youth (<18 years)
           living in poverty.

       During 2007, the highest household income quartile
        earned over $234,800 while the lowest earned less
        than $29,900, and eight-fold difference.

       40% of all households had income below $52,200.

         Oakland County has approximately 525,000 housing
          units.
         During 2006-2008, it is estimated that 22% of
          housing units were rentals and 9% were vacant.
         Oakland County’s home ownership rate (76.5%) is
          higher than both the state of Michigan (75.9%) and
          the U.S. average (67.8%)

Oakland County Alcohol Related Traffic Crashes


   Alcohol related traffic crashes are an indicator of community
    problems related to alcohol use.
   In 2008 1,140 traffic crashes occurred where at least one
    driver had been drinking. These crashes resulted in 19 fatal
    crashes, killing 20 persons and 554 injuries.
   Driving after drinking too much (in the past month) was
    reported by 2.5% of the adult population (24,000 persons)
    during 2007. However only 6,276 persons were arrested for
    operating a vehicle under the influence during 2008.
   Alcohol related traffic crashes are the “tip of the iceberg.”

Oakland County Alcohol Related Arrests

   During 2008, 6,276 persons were arrested in Oakland County
    for driving with alcohol-involved and 5,505 residents were
    convicted (an average of 17 arrests per day, 459 convictions
    per month).

   The rate of persons arrested for OUIL is slightly higher in
    Oakland County than the state, however, the rate of OUIL
    convictions is slightly lower.


   Males represent 74% of all OUIL arrests in Oakland County.

           Thirty percent (30%) of drinking drivers involved in crashes were
            under age 25 (12% are under age 20).
           Sixty-six percent (68%) of alcohol-involved crashes occur on
            local streets followed by 13% on the interstate highways.
           Males are involved in 70-75% of all alcohol related crashes, fatal
            crashes and incapacitating crashes.
           Fifty percent (57%) of alcohol related crashes occur between 9
            p.m. and 3 a.m., while 55% occur between Friday and Sunday.
           Most alcohol related crashes occur on dry roads (66%), in clear
            weather (53%), and at speeds of less than 45 mph (49.7%).

 The number of deaths attributed to Chronic Liver
  Disease has increased over the past two
  decades.
 In 2007, 117 Oakland County residents recorded
  deaths due to Chronic Liver Disease.
 While the rate of Chronic Liver Disease deaths
  since 1990 has decreased slightly for Oakland
  County residents, the statewide rate has
  decreased significantly.

   Students and Young Adults

 While the reported number of youth contemplating suicide
  decreased between 7th to 11th grades, the number who
  reported attempting suicide increased.

 Among persons under age 25, the number of suicides
  decreased from 1990 through 2000, but, increased since
  that time.

 The rate of suicide among persons under age 25 in
  Oakland County has been significantly lower than the
  statewide rate since 1990.
