application for freshman
undergraduate admission
www.admissions.umich.edu
STEP 1: Make sure you are a freshman!
This application form is the right one to use if you want to enroll in the 2009 academic year as a freshman.
If you are applying for any other year, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Applications for transfer, re-admit, and crosscampus transfer students can be found online at www.admissions.umich.edu.
Early Response and Rolling Admission
At Michigan, we have two admissions systems— Early Response and Rolling Admission. For Early Response, if your application is postmarked by November 1st, we guarantee a decision will be made on your application by December 24th. To be eligible for Early Response, you must be applying for fall term to either LSA, Engineering, Kinesiology, or Nursing, and your entire application—including essay and short answers, official transcripts, official test scores, recommendations, and the appropriate application fee—must be postmarked by November 1st. For more information, see www.admissions.umich.edu/early. If your application isn’t postmarked by November 1st, you have until February 1st to complete your application (January 15th for applications to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance) and you will fall under our Rolling Admissions program.
If you would like to be considered for preferred admission for any of the programs listed, specify your program of choice in question . Please note that a supplemental essay relating to your program of choice is also required. Please see STEP 4 for essay text.
TRANSFER
You are a “Transfer” if you have attended any institution of higher education (on any basis, for any length of time) following your high school graduation. Transfer applicants must apply online at www.admissions.umich.edu.
FRESHMAN
You are a “Freshman” if you have never attended any institution of higher education following your high school graduation. Here are the materials we need from all freshman applicants: Test scores: Arrange for official SAT and/or ACT test scores to be sent to us, and other test scores if applicable, from the testing agency. We require the ACT/SAT writing component scores. Rush scores will not be processed on an expedited basis. If you are not a native speaker of English, arrange for your official TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS scores to be sent to us from the testing agency. Transcripts: Arrange for official copies of your transcript to be sent to us from every school you have attended starting with ninth grade. If you are a home-schooled student or you attend an unaccredited high school, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions before September of your senior year to find out if you should submit additional credentials. Recommendations: Request recommendations from your high school counselor and one of your teachers in a core academic subject (math, science, history or social sciences, English, foreign language, or computer programming, but not fine arts, athletics, religion, or business unless you are applying to Interarts Performance; the School of Art & Design; or the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. A separate arts recommendation form is required for these units). Fill out the top part of each form and give them to your counselor and teacher. You should also give your completed application to your high school counselor who will send it in to us. Your teacher can either return the completed teacher recommendation to you and you can send it in to us, or your teacher can send it in to us directly.

You are a “Cross-campus transfer” if you are a current student at U-M Ann Arbor and you want to transfer from one School or College to another. Email the url for your website to a&d@umich.edu.
By mail
Send slides, photographs, and/or electronic media. Send a mail portfolio to Undergraduate Admissions Committee, School of Art & Design Academic Services Office, 2038 Art & Architecture Building, 2000 Bonisteel Boulevard, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2069. For a mail portfolio of digital images, follow these requirements: Format images as jpeg (.jpg) files. Save no larger than 1000 pixels wide x 800 pixels high. Larger images will not be reviewed. Save images on a regular CD-ROM (not CD-RW, VCD, mixed media, Audio CD, or DVD). Include a typed, numbered list that identifies each image by title, date, medium, size, and other appropriate information.
General portfolio guidelines: Include 15 to 20 items representing work completed both in and outside of art classes. For a portfolio review by mail, include a reference sheet with your name, address, and social security number. Include media, size, and date. Number your entries to correspond to the reference sheet. Work in a digital format must be stand-alone work that does not require installation of your software on a School of Art & Design computer. Video work must be original video work or documentation of performance art, not documentation of static work such as painting and sculpture. Include a self-addressed mailer with postage if you want your portfolio returned. For transfer students, advanced standing will be dependent upon evaluation of your collegelevel studio courses.
What type of work should I submit for a portfolio review? Include representative work in a variety of media to indicate your range of experiences. Include only your best work—work that demonstrates media skills as well as evidence of creativity, imagination, and risktaking. Every portfolio varies, however the following are expected in a competitive portfolio: Drawings from direct observation. If you have in the past copied from photographs or other flat copy, you can improve your portfolio with drawings from observation. Include a sketchbook or individual sketches along with finished drawings. Include works that convey your strengths and interests in other 2-D media (for example: fibers, painting, photography, printmaking, and mixed media); 3-D media (for example: ceramics, metalwork, sculpture, and installations); electronic media (for example: computer, video, sound, and audio), and performance, conceptual, or other work not easy to categorize.
