       TOPEX is a group of Romanian companies, founded in 1990, by ten enthusiastic
engineers experienced in telecommunications. Its activity is directed to the research,
development and production of telecom equipment as well as service.
        Very quickly, TOPEX become the most important manufacturer of communications
solutions for small to large companies as well as for telecommunications operators and providers
in Romania. Our company designs equipment for all existing mobile systems
(GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS, CDMA/EVDO, HDSPA/TDD), including 3G+ technologies.
        TOPEX is represented all over Romania by a wide network of local distributors through
which the promotion, administration and product maintenance are running.
        Due to our innovation power, authentic flexibility, real respect for our partners and the
secure solutions that we provide TOPEX extended its business worldwide. Currently TOPEX
delivers its products through its distributors to: Spain, France, Italy, Russia, UK, Greece,
Netherlands, Nigeria, Bulgaria, etc.
         In order to achieve effective and flawless manufacturing for its products, TOPEX has
carefully organized its Research and Development Department along with its production facility.
       This allows TOPEX to have maximum control of all the processes involved in the
complex operations related to high-technology electronic manufacturing. Currently, 25 percent of
TOPEX personnel are part of R&D Department and their number is increasing.
        TOPEX also considered the training and the service as an integral part of the solutions it
provides. Therefore, comprehensive training sessions are held at the TOPEX factory,
complimentary for the company’s clients. Service is also provided via Internet, as all TOPEX
solutions are designed especially to allow this, at the lowest cost.
         TOPEX has implemented the quality management system according ISO9001 standard
certified by SRAC since 1997, respectively by IQNET since 2002. In 2001 TOPEX become a
sector member of I.T.U. (International Telecommunication Union).
The main lines of products of our company are:

Features of the SIM Server
    •   Virtual allocation of SIM cards – means very high versatility and avoids expensive and
        time-consuming trips for SIM cards replacement and recharging.
    •   Central store & management. The info from all the SIM cards of all the SIM BOX
        equipments is stored and managed centrally, on the PC running the Server software
        application. Later, the relevant info (for a group of modules, valuable for a specified time
        interval) may be sent to the GSM Gateway (TOPEX multiAccess equipment).
    •   Simultaneous remote access to the SIM cards
    •   Flexible SIM cards allocation, according to tariff plans of the mobile carriers (advanced
        LCR). This way you always get the lowest possible rates for the calls.
    •   Detailed billing (CDR)
    •   Different algorithms for SIM selection; flexible SIM timer settings (minute, hour, day)
    •   A very flexible allocation: at any given moment of time, any SIM may be assigned to any
        Gateway, no matter where they are in the world
    •   Group based SIM card management – the user can define a group of mobile modules
        that will be assigned a group of SIM cards (a base). Any client can have one or several
        bases of SIM cards.
    •   Remote administration via IP
    •   Real time alarming system – the alarms concerning blocked SIM cards or other
        problems can be sent out via e-mail, SMS or phone. Also, when the user enters the Web
        based management interface, he will see warning messages.
    •   Additional local SIM cards can be used for backup. The remote Gateways currently use
        virtual SIM cards from the server, but they are also fitted with real (local) SIM cards. In
        case of IP link failure, the Gateway carries on by using the local SIM cards, until the IP
        connection is restored.
    •   Automatic SIM insertion / removal detection – the boards with SIM cards are hot
        swappable, the program scans the SIM BOX to detect the changes (insertion, removal,
        replacement of SIM cards) and updates accordingly the data base
    •   Flexible integration into existing GSM Gateways. New mobile cards for the multiAccess
        gateways include the SIM emulators. Older cards require an addition / replacement: the
        processor replaced with a piggy-back card. This small PCB includes not only a new
        processor, but also the required simulation circuits. Also, it features a pair of SIM
        adapters (miniature PCBs) that you must insert in the last two SIM holders, to emulate
        the local SIM cards.
    •   Remote recharging (from the Web interface of the SIM Server) of the pre-paid SIM
        cards.
    •   Generates detailed log files. These files can be sent out by e-mail.

1       TOPEX SIM Server DESCRIPTION
          The structure of the TOPEX equipment is composed from: TOPEX SIM Server, TOPEX
SIM BOX and TOPEX multiAccess equipments. The all three equipments are dependent one
from another and the operation without one of them is impossible in this configuration.
          The TOPEX SIM Server equipment acts like a central core of the TOPEX structure. It is
a Linux PC which has installed the SIM Server application where through you can manage and
configure the all structure of equipments.
          The TOPEX multiAccess is the GSM Gateway. It contains several mobile modules with
attached SIM emulators. Thus every GSM channel can be configured to use the most convenient
tariff at a specified moment of time.
          The TOPEX SIM BOX equipment is a 6U cabinet rack which contains the SIM cards.
Single SIM BOX equipment can include up to 512 SIM cards.
          The TOPEX multiAccess asks for a SIM card to the SIM Server. The SIM Server
analyzes the status of the requested SIM card. If the SIM card can be used for a call, the SIM
Server communicate with the SIM BOX where the SIM card is physically located. The
communication between the three TOPEX equipments is bidirectional.

        1.1     Why should I need a SIM Server?
         Substantial cost reductions are achieved through the Mobile Gateways from TOPEX
(multiAccess equipments) by converting fixed-to-mobile and mobile-to-fixed calls to mobile-to-
mobile calls. Optimization is performed both by time using the most convenient route at any
given moment and by choosing among different wireless networks, depending upon the called
number.
         The GSM gateways may be distributed in various locations all over the land. It is
sometimes difficult to protect the SIM cards from theft.
         Moreover, the SIM cards used in gateways are of pre-paid type. When the credit expires,
the card must be recharged or exchanged. This means expensive and time-consuming trips to
all the locations. While operation, management of debugging of the gateway can be performed
remotely via IP, SIM-related problems needed on-site interventions. Such problems include
exchanging, recharging of expired cards, repair of defects and so on.
         But if you use the TOPEX SIM Server system, all these are no longer required!
There is no more need to use SIM cards locally in TOPEX multiAccess systems, although SIM
cards may be present for backup purposes. Now the subscriber cards can be used centrally, by
means of our new Server of SIM card. The SIM data can be supplied over an IP network from
one or several secure locations, to all TOPEX multiAccess systems at their various sites in the
world.
This way you have several benefits:
    •   now each mobile channel of every TOPEX multiAccess gateway is generally available to
        every SIM card at the SIM card server, making possible dynamic SIM card exchanges.
        Assignments of existing card may can be changed at any time and re-allocated to
        different GSM channels;
    •   pre-paid cards can be exchanged without need for “on site tourism”
    •   also, other tasks of SIM card maintenance may be performed remotely, from anywhere
        in the world, via the Web interface of the application running on the SIM Server.
    •   very good protection against theft, the SIM cards are in SIM BOX equipments in secure
        locations, not physically present in the remote gateways.

        1.2     Principles of operation of the TOPEX SIM Server
    •   All of the SIM cards used are virtually stored and operated in a single central “SIM
        server”
    •   The SIM Server allocates the SIM cards remotely, via an IP connection
    •   The GSM/UMTS modems from the TOPEX gateways (multiAccess equipments) have
        access to the remote SIM via a GSM terminal adapter / SIM emulation device.

2       SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
The TOPEX SIM Server system consists of:
•   central SIM Server, that manages all the SIM BOX equipments and the Gateways. The
    Server program is an application that runs on a highly reliable Linux PC
•   the remote gateways (multi-Access equipments) with emulation capabilities – each mobile
    module of the remote gateway includes a hardware and software SIM emulator.
•   one or several SIM BOX equipments, each with several SIM boards (SIM2PCIs up to 16)

All these elements are connected via IP (the big Internet) as shown in the drawing above.
To ensure continuous operation, it is highly recommended that you use uninterruptible supplies
(UPS) for powering both the remote SIM BOX equipment and the SIM Server computer.


Warning! Use only the equipments shipped in the TOPEX package! Do not try to use other
components even if they seem to operate in the same circumstances. For example do not use a
simple Linux PC other than the TOPEX SIM Server equipment.

        2.1     TOPEX SIM Server
        The administration component of the TOPEX system is a Linux PC named TOPEX SIM
Server. It manages every TOPEX SIM BOX and TOPEX multiAccess equipments, no matter
where they are located in the world. Any SIM card from any SIM BOX may be assigned to any
GSM channel of any TOPEX gateway (multiAccess equipment) that features a SIM emulator.
        The SIM server equipment has a compact design; it is reliable being enclosed in a 2U
height case.

2.1.1 Functional description
        For reliability purposes, the SIM Server makes use of a RAID system that always
performs backups of the SIM cards data bases, log files and software application.
Its main features are:
•   Linux PC
•   SIM card management via IP from one central location.
•   SIM-Server Database.
•   Advanced least cost routing (LCR) functions.
•   Management software and remote administration console via TCP/IP.
•   User shell for SIM-card management (selection of SIM assignment algorithm, registering
    and deregistering of SIM cards, monitor function, history, automatic substitution of blocked
    SIM cards or SIM cards without charge contingent, simulation of card movement, cost-
    balancing).
•   The physical movement of SIM cards is simulated by different algorithms that assign for
    specified GSM modules various SIM cards, located in different places.
•   The number of SIM BOX equipments and Gateways managed is limited only by the
    processing power of the PC and the bandwidth of the Internet connection (you need a thick
    pipe).

2.1.2 Hardware description
A. Enclosure

        The TOPEX SIM Server unit is enclosed in a 19” case with 2U height. The front panel
includes a cover with notches that is opening with a key delivered by TOPEX. The front panel of
the equipment can be locked to prevent unauthorized access.
        When the cover is unlocked you will have access to the front panel of the equipment.

On the front panel the equipment are located:
•   the reset button – colored in red (labeled RESET)
•   the power button – colored in green (labeled POWER)
•   2xcooling fans for assuring the proper ventilation of the equipment
•   DVD – ROM unit for reading CDs or DVDs
•   2xLEDs of the electric circuit

On the back panel of the TOPEX SIM Server equipment we have:
•   a central panel with the connectors of the electrical circuit
•   the special connector for the power supply cable on the left upper part of the back panel
•   2 x sets of notches for the equipment ventilation (located on the left and right extremities of
    the back panel).

B. Electric circuit

The card contains a powerful processor controlling the whole PCI bus of the system.
The electric circuit includes multiple printed circuit cards and a hard disk for the operating
system, application programs and storage.
It features on the front panel:

•   green LED (labeled with the      symbol) – shows the equipment power supply when it lights
    up


•   orange LED (labeled with the       symbol) – shows the hard disk activity when it lights up

On the back panel of the electric circuit we have:
• 2 x PS/2 connectors for mouse and keyboard connection
•    4 x USB-A connectors (2 connectors in the left side, near the mouse / keyboard connectors,
     and 2 connectors in the right side, under the Ethernet connector)
•    DB 27 female connector for the printer connection
•    DB 9 male connector
•    DB 15 female connector for the PC monitor connection
•    Ethernet connector for the local network
•    3 connectors – 2 (blue and yellow) for connecting the head phones and speakers and the
     pink one for connecting a microphone

        2.2     TOPEX multiAccess
           The second component of the TOPEX SIM Server system consists of the remote GSM
gateway – multiAccess equipment, which will benefit from the “virtual SIM cards”.
           Each mobile module of the TOPEX gateway has attached a SIM emulator (hardware and
software).
           This way every GSM channel can be dynamically configured to use the best available
tariff, at any moment of time. The equipment boards have these emulators incorporated.
           For previous versions of GSM subscriber cards, upgrading to SIM Server capabilities is
simple enough.
Notice: In special cases, on the client special request, instead of the multiAccess equipment we
can deliver the QUTEX equipment!

2.2.1 Enclosure
        The multiAccess system is integrated in a 19’’ rack. The height of the equipment is 7U
and the depth is 30 cm.
        The cabinet rack is made of aluminum.

         The front panel of the rack is open, equipped with guides for the plug-in cards.
When not all interface cards are plugged in, the free sections of the front panel must be covered
with a lid (cover panels).
         The bottom and upper sides of the cabinet are covered with perforated sheet.
         The proprietary backplane (system bus) of the equipment is designed as a printed circuit
board (PCB) with two rows of connectors and fitted to the inner rack carrier profiles.

   Basic Dimensions
        Overall dimensions (except protrusions) are: 490 mm x 300 mm x 310 mm

   Front Side
         On the front, the TOPEX rack has 19 slots for plug-in cards.
         The first slots from the right are dedicated, for mandatory cards. The power supply card,
E1 trunk cards, and main processor card must be included in any case. The VoIP card may be
used or not, but it must be inserted in a dedicated slot.
         The remaining 16 slots may be fitted with mobile interface cards (GSM, CDMA, UMTS)
or different analog or digital junction cards.

   Back Side
        The backside of the TOPEX rack includes the connectors and the AC mains supply unit.
        On the back you can find the bank of RJ-45 connectors for the E1 trunks and the
receptacle for the power cord to the mains outlet on the wall.
        The power supply is a switching mode industrial unit with input voltage of 240VA.C.

Note: TOPEX multiAccess equipment is supplied from a voltage within 230 …. 264VA.C. range.
The admissible maximum voltage for equipment operation is 264VA.C.

        The internal fans, located on the back side of the unit, provide adequate cooling. The
backside power supply delivers all voltages needed by the equipment, including for the power
supply card.
        The mains power switch (On/Off) and the fuse are also located on the back.

2.2.2 System cards
A. Power Supply Card

             Labeled: Power
             This card is a double-width one, 40 mm wide.
             It includes a power supply and optionally a call voltage generator and ensures
             the supply of the cabinet rack with +5V and –5V voltages. It draws its power from
             the regulated +24V D.C. voltage of the rack power supply. The power supply card
             must deliver these two voltages:
                 •     +5V ±2% with maximum output current of 7 A
                 •     -5V ±5% with maximum output current of 0,5 A

             Significance of LED indicators
                - 5V
                Lights up green when -5V voltage is on

                + 5V
                Lights up green when +5V voltage is on

                 RING
                 It holds significance only for the equipment version fitted with ringer generator.
                 If the equipment has ringer generator this LED will blink green with 25 Hz
             frequency.

B. Dual E1 trunk card



              Labeled: 2 E1
              The 2 E1 trunk card is a single width card, 20mm wide.
              It features two E1 interfaces that conform to G. 703 and has a frame structure
           according to ITU-T (CCITT) standard G. 704.
              Supported signaling includes R2 generic CAS (Channel Associated Signaling - in
           accordance both with ITU-T Q.421/Q.422 and with Q.411/Q.412), ISDN DSS1, and
           SS7.
              The encoding follows the A Law and the bit rate is the standard 2,048 Kbps.
              Nominal impedance is 120 ohm standard

              Significance of indicators and controls:

              HB - Heartbeat green LED, it pulses steadily when everything is OK, frequency
           depending of type of signalization used

              LOS - Lights up red to show Loss of Incoming Signal

              R - Reset button, that is recessed (can’t be pressed accidentally)

              LR - Reset LED, lights up red during card initialization (reset) or on error




C. Main processor card

              Labeled: PG

               The Main processor (PG) card is a double-width (40mm) card. It contains a
           powerful processor controlling the whole system.
               The card includes multiple printed circuit boards and the hard disk for operating
           system, application programs and storage. It features on the front panel two serial
           interfaces (COM1, COM2) and one Ethernet connector (10Base-T).
           These interfaces are used to connect the TOPEX multiAccess system to a computer
           or to the Internet, for installation and servicing or for permanent operation. Through
           these ports you may perform the configuration, administration and maintenance
           operation for the equipment.
              Significance of indicators and controls
              RESET
              Hidden (recessed) button for reset
              HB
              Heartbeat LED, blinks green steadily during normal operation
              GCK
              Clock generation LED, lights green to indicate that the local clock generator on
              the PG card is active. Normally it is inactive; the clock signal is received from the
              E1 card.
              ALRM
              Alarm LED, lights up red to show an error

D. VoIP card

                Labeled: xVoIP
                 The VoIP card (Voice over IP) is used to transmit voice packets through the
             Internet. It is a single width card, 20 mm wide.
                 The card features on the front panel a serial interface (COM) and four
             Ethernet connectors (10/100 BASE-T). The serial interface is used to debug the
             processor card. The Ethernet connectors perform the followings functions:
                 • Upper ETH, labeled “WAN” is used to connect the TOPEX VoIP card to
                     the IP network (Internet). The name WAN suggests it is intended for
                     connection to the outside world!
                 • Middle connectors “LAN2” and “LAN1” can connect other devices to
                     the TOPEX equipment (Laptop, notebook, PC, etc.). They are part of a
                     switch for the local network.
                 • Lower “LAN3” is used to perform the connection between the VoIP card
                     and the processor card (PG) of the TOPEX equipment.
             Significance of indicators
                 RTP – RTP activity
                 Blue LED, It signals RTP activity (voice packets are coming or going) of the
             VoIP card.
                 WON - WAN connection active
                 Yellow LED, lights up to indicate activity on the WAN (remote network).
                 RST – Reset indicator
                 Red LED, lights up briefly to show that a reset has occurred.
                RESET - The reset button of the card.
                When the equipment starts (implicit when the VoIP card is supplied) these
             three indicators and the LED indicators (green and yellow) from the Ethernet
             connectors turn on sequential. If not that means that the VoIP card is not
             working.
                The voltage supply is 5V and the current intensity is 1.4 A.

E. BRI card – S/T



                Labeled: BRI
              This card is used for digital communication (voice-digital, data).
              The subscribers unit has 4 S/T line interfaces (pursuant to TS300-012,
           CITTI I.430 \ and ANSI 1.605).

             Significance of indicators
                On the front side of the card there are 4 RJ45 connectors. Each connector
             has 2 signaling LED indicators (a yellow one and a green one).
                The yellow LED indicates, when is alight that the security of the tele-supply
             card was burned.
                The green LED indicates, when is alight, that the S/T interface is activated.

F. Modules card – subscriber unit for mobile network connection



                The mobile interface card assures the connection to a mobile network (GSM /
            CDMA /UMTS).
                It contains two modules (wireless modems) on the printed circuit card. There are
            three types of cards, for GSM, CDMA or UMTS networks. Furthermore, the mobile
            interface card can be equipped with modules for different frequency bands, such as
            GSM 900/1800 MHz, GSM 850 MHz, GSM 800/1800/1900 MHz, CDMA
            450/800/1900 MHz respectively UMTS 2100 MHz.
                In this picture you can see a drawing of the card, with GSM modules.
                Inside each mobile module, there is a 4-slot adapter (holder) for the SIM or RUIM
            cards, if your network operator uses subscriber cards.
                Also, each mobile module features a connector for its external antenna. The
            SMA connector is located on the front panel. On the connector you may thread
            directly the discreet antenna or a cable to connect to external antennas, directly or
            through a splitter / concentrator.
                On the front panel there are also nine optic indicators for the mobile modules
            card (four LED indicators per each mobile module and one general).
                The significance of these LED indicators is shown in detail in the tables below.
               Note: If there is no serial communication between the main processor card
            and the module card, after a delay of about 15 seconds the reset of this card
            will be triggered.

2.2.3 Mobile antennas
A. Individual antennas
     The TOPEX equipment uses different types of individual (discreet) or collective antennas.
There are available stick antennas to be threaded directly to the output of wireless modules, Yagi
high-gain antennas to be used with the splitter/combiner, or magnetic-base antennas (see details
below).
     If you use one antenna per each mobile module (GSM / CDMA / UMTS), the recommended
type is the “magnetic antenna” described below. These have a connection cable and a base with
a magnet for fastening to a ferrous support. The base is heavy, so the antenna will stand upright
even if you place it on a flat surface that is not metallic.

B. Common / combiner splitter
         TOPEX provides several types of combiners for using one antenna for several mobile
channels. See below illustration and explanations for the 32-way combiner/splitter. It allows
grouping of up to eight RF modules on a single high-gain remote antenna. Its banks depend on
of the variant of equipage providing a total of 32 cellular channels, so you may use only 4/2/1
external antennas for all of the mobile channels of the TOPEX multiAccess equipment!
         This means an easy way to use it and simple installation.
         The combiner saves both mounting space and RF connecting cables. The high-gain,
directional (Yagi) antennas can be mounted on the roof, for better field strength, and pointed
towards specific base stations of the wired network provider.

        2.3     TOPEX SIM BOX

         The third component of the TOPEX SIM Server system is the SIM BOX equipment which
contains up to 16 SIM boards – SIM2PCI cards.
         TOPEX SIM BOX was designed for allows managing and administrating, by remote
control, the SIM cards registered by different mobile network carriers.
         TOPEX SIM BOX is a compact and high-reliability system that includes all components
in a 19-inch rack only 6U high. The rack is a custom-built Compact PCI chassis with 16 slots
available, with full hot–swap and dual power supply (current sharing) capabilities. This means
that upon request it may be delivered in 1+1 redundant configuration to increase availability.
         The SIM BOX fully supports remote supervision and configuration via IP networks.
         For details about the installation of the SIM BOX equipment please see the TOPEX SIM
BOX Installation Manual shipped in the TOPEX SIM Server package.

3 INSTALLATION of TOPEX SIM Server

To install the SIM Server equipment proceeds as follows:


    Unpack the SIM Server and check the contents;
    Choose and place in the location intended for operation;
    Plug the supply cable to the back of the unit;
    Power up the equipment through the green button (labeled POWER) from the front panel of
the equipment;
    Check the yellow LED indicator on the front panel;
    Configure the local IP, netmask and gateway.


To install the multiAccess equipment proceeds as follows:


    Unpack the multiAccess and check the contents;
    Mount the equipment in a rack;
   Be sure that the distance above and below from the equipment must be at least 3U to assure
adequate ventilation;
    Insert the SIM or RUIM cards in holders of the UABxxx cards, if your mobile network uses
subscriber cards. For this take off the module card, insert each SIM / RUIM card in the
corresponding holder, and then plug back the UABxxx card into the multiAccess equipment;
    Connect the external antennas, directly or via combiner, to the RF connectors of the mobile
cards on the front panel;
    Connect the cables for the E1 digital trunks to the front or back of the unit;
    Connect the local network (Ethernet) cable;
    If your TOPEX system has a xVoIP card, connect the LAN (Ethernet) cables to the VoIP
card;
    Plug the supply cable to the back of the unit (The TOPEX multiAccess equipment is supplied
from a voltage within 230 … 264 VA.C. range. Please note that the admissible maximum voltage
is 260VA.C.);
    Power up the equipment through the ON/OFF button at the back;
   Install on PC the OAM program. This program is on the CD that is shipped together with the
TOPEX Gateway;
    Start up the OAM program on the PC connected to multiAccess.

To install the SIM BOX equipment proceeds as follows:
    Unpack the equipment package and check its content
    Choose and place the equipment in the location intended for operation
    Remove each SIM2PCI board and insert the SIM cards in the corresponding holders and
    then insert back the SIM2PCI into the SIM BOX case as described in the SIM BOX
    Installation Manual
    Connect the Ethernet cable
    Connect the supply cable to the special connector located on the back panel of the
    equipment (the equipment is supplied in a 110.....260VA.C. voltage range. The maximum
    supply voltage is 260VA.C.)
    Power up the SIM BOX through the on/off button located on the back panel of the equipment
    near the special connector for the power supply cable.
    Check the LED indicators from the front panel. You must have no red LEDs alight. The
    indicator of the power supply should light up green, the indicators “DONE” on each SIM2PIC
    card should be ON, on the CPU card the indicators should be blinking. Also the blue
    indicators “HOT SWAP” should light up upon loading the configuration of the system. In
    normal operation, after startup the system loads the drivers for the SIM2PCI cards, then the
    blue LEDs turn off.
    Connect the Linux console through the serial or the Ethernet cable
    Configure the local IP, netmask and gateway for the equipment

        3.1     Connecting the TOPEX SIM Server equipment
    Connect the SIM Server equipment to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet by
    using the standard UTP Ethernet cable (CAT-5) shipped in the TOPEX SIM Server package.
    Plug in the UTP cable in the Ethernet connector located on the back panel of the SIM Server
    equipment. The embedded orange LED on the Ethernet connector must light up.
    Connect the power supply cable to the special connector located on the back panel of the
    SIM Server equipment (on the left upper part above the electrical circuits connectors)
    Press the green button (labeled POWER) for power up the SIM Server equipment, which is
    located on the front panel. The yellow LED near the POWER button must lights up to
    indicate the power up of the equipment.

        3.2     Connecting the TOPEX multiAccess equipment

3.2.1 Connecting the E1 cable
        The E1 trunks must be connected to the RJ45 inputs located either on the back of
multiAccess, near the power switch (ON/OFF) or at the front (two connectors for each 2xE1
card). The first E1 trunk is connected to the first pair of RJ45 connectors (from bottom up):
• first (lower) connector in straight connection (=): Rx on the wire pair 1,2 orange color and Tx
    on the wire pair 4,5 blue color
• second connector (on top of the previous) in cross connection (x): Tx on the wire pair 1,2
    orange color and Rx on the wire pair 4,5 blue color
        This allows easy connection by using universal straight cable (shipped with the
equipment) to any equipment that has a standard output for the E1 trunk (RJ45 connectors with
connections 1, 2 respectively 4, 5). The dual-E1 card features the two E1 connectors on the front
panel of TOPEX multiAccess equipment.

       After you wire the cable, you can plug this cable into corresponding E1 connector, as

3.2.2 Connecting the serial cable for accessing LINUX system console
        For accessing the LINUX system console, you can use the serial connector, type DB9,
located on the front panel of the group processor (PG) card. This serial port is labeled COM2.
        The serial cable must be fitted at both ends with female DB9 connectors (female –
female with crossover).
The pin out of the serial cable must be according to the table below:

3.2.3 Connecting the Ethernet cable
      To connect the multi-Access equipment to local area network (LAN) or to the Internet, you
can use a standard UTP Ethernet cable (CAT-5). This cable can be crossed or straight
depending of type of connection (if you want to connect directly a PC to multiAccess you will use
a crossed cable and in case of connecting to the LAN, you will use a straight cable).
      Note: After inserting all SIM / RUIM cards and all necessary cables, the TOPEX system
must be powered up by pressing the on / off button (on rear panel of the equipment)!




        3.3     Connecting the TOPEX SIM BOX equipment
    To connect the cables (Ethernet, power supply, serial for configuration) please see the
TOPEX SIM BOX Installation Manual shipped in the TOPEX SIM Server package.

4 CONFIGURATION
        Each of the three equipments which compose the TOPEX SIM Server system must be
individually configured. Each of them is provided by TOPEX with a specific IP Address. The IP
Address is written on a label applied on each of the three equipments.
        There are no physical connections between the equipments shipped in the TOPEX
package. The communication between them is made through the IP connection.

        4.1     Configuration of TOPEX SIM Server equipment
        The SIM Server equipment is a computer which has installed Linux as operating system
and the SIM Server embedded software.
        You can easily access the embedded interface from the SIM Server computer or from a
remote computer through the IP Network.
        You only need a web browser installed on the respective computer. The SIM Server
equipment is shipped by TOPEX with a default IP Address which is 192.168.1.20.

4.1.1 Accessing the TOPEX SIM Server configuration page
         To access the SIM Server configuration page from a remote computer you must type the
default address as the URL: http://192.168.1.20.
         After you type this address on the web browser the following window will appear which
will ask you about the username and the password:




       The default Username is admin and the
password is 99admin11. Fill in these fields and press the
“LogIn” button located on the bottom of the little window
named Authentication.
       Then you must receive a message like
“Welcome to the TOPEX virtual SIM Server” and you
are now in the main configuration page of the TOPEX
SIM Server equipment.

        If you will not received this message this means that you made a mistake when you
entered the authentication data and you will received an error message like: “Date de
autentificare incorecte!...” that means “Wrong authentication data!...” with red font on a
yellow screen. Then you must reenter the correct username and password.




          After the successful login, you will enter the main configuration page of the TOPEX SIM
Server.
        The main menus of the configuration page are: Connections, SIM Pools, SIMs, GSM
Pools, Cost Profiles, Recharging, Logs, Statistics, Users and Logout.
        The menus are located on the top of the page under the configuration page name on a
blue bar.
        Forward we will analyze every menu with its component fields.

4.1.2 Connections menu

         This section allows you to add several
equipments (SIM BOX or GSM Gateway) to the SIM
Server coverage area.
         For that you will use the “Add new client”
button located on the bottom of the “Connections” menu.
         After you press this button, the following window
will appear.
         You have several fields which allow you to
choose an equipment to be added on the structure.
         You can choose from GSM Gateway - multi
Access or SIM BOX equipments.
         You may add several equipments (GSM
Gateways or SIM BOX equipments) on the same central
SIM Server.
         The Server will manage and administrate all the
equipments connected on it.

The parameters of this menu are detailed below:
    Name – name of the equipment added on the SIM Server structure. For example
    “Simbox_cp303” or “gsmbox_andrei”
    Details – allows the description of the new equipment.
    Secret – option not used.
    Valid IP – the IP Address of the SIM BOX or multiAccess added on the SIM Server
    structure.
    Type - choose the type of the equipment added on the SIM Server structure. The options are
    GSM Gateway (multiAccess) or SIM Box.

Warnings!
•   On the SIM BOX configuration structure it is a file named “mnt/app/cfg/simserver.conf”
    which contains the next fields: “Simserver”, “192.168.1.20” which is the default IP Address
    of the SIM Server and “name: <SIM BOX name>”. For example “Simbox_cp303”. These
    fields are shown in the respective file one under other.
•   Also, on the multiAccess configuration structure it is a file named “mnt/app/cfg/traffic.cfs”
    which contains a field such as: “simserver_<IP Address of SIM Server>_<port
    number>_<name of the multiAccess>”.
    For example “simserver_192.168.1.20_130001_gsmbox_andrei”.
•   It is necessary that the name of the SIM BOX or of the multiAccess equipments must be
    identical to the names indicated on the “mnt/app/cfg/simserver.conf” and
    “mnt/app/cfg/traffic.cfs” files from the SIM BOX respective multiAccess configuration
    structures.
•   The SIM BOX and multiAccess equipments contains a firewall program that could reject the
    tries of the SIM Server to connect. To allow this the 9200 and 9201 ports must be opened.
    Usually there are opened before delivery by TOPEX.

4.1.3 SIM Pools menu
        This section allows you to group the SIM cards together (in a pool of SIMs) depending
on several features: name of the operator, type of the SIM cards (pre pay or post pay), type of
subscription, etc.
At first, will appear a page with 2 sections: Filters and
SIM Pool.
A. Filters – you can select the name of the SIM Pool
you want to access




B. SIM Pool – the parameters for the SIM cards
included in a SIM Pool
        The SIM Pool section of the main menu
contains several options which are detailed below:
•   Name – name of the new created SIM Pool. For
    example test or test2.
•   Description – short presentation of the SIM Pool.
•   Selection Algorithm – allows the selection of SIM
    cards depending of several algorithms.
        There are three fields of Selection Algorithms
(labeled from 1 to 3) and one of them is required. You
can select a different algorithm from every field.
        Options for the Selection Algorithms are




•   SIM Work Time – time of operation for a SIM card. After this time has expired, the SIM card
    is moved in another position. The format of the work time is hh:mm:ss.
•   SIM Idle Time – idle time for a SIM card after its work time has expired. The format of the
    idle time is hh:mm:ss.
•   Max Calls / GW – maximum number of calls for which the SIM card is maintain in the same
    Gateway. If the number of calls is greater than the number specified in this field, it is made a
    moving simulation for the respective SIM card in another Gateway.
•   Count zero as call – you can choose to take into account or not the count zero calls. An
    example of a count zero call is that made by the operator when you are announced that your
    credit has expired.
•   Max talk time – the maximum time allowed for conversation for a SIM card included in the
    SIM Pool. When this time is exceeded the SIM card is blocked. The Max talk time format is
    hh:mm:ss.

•   Max cost – the maximum cost for a call accomplished for a SIM card.
•   Max calls – the maximum number of calls allowed for a SIM card.
•   Max errors – the maximum number of errors for a SIM card. When this number is reached,
    the respective SIM card will be blocked and it will not be used anymore. The possible errors
    that could appear are: loading errors, the SIM cards are blocked or the SIM cards will not
    register.
•   Max Zero – the maximum number of count zero calls.
•   Min Durat – the minimum time (in seconds) for a conversation made through a SIM card.
•   No twice the same GSM Pool – if you check this box you will have only one GSM pool for
    each GSM gateway (multiAccess equipment).
•   Priority – set up the priority for a SIM card. The zero value indicates the highest priority.
•   SIM Type – options are Post Pay and Pre Pay. If you check the Pre Pay box you will have
    two options: Rechargeable and Check Credit. The Pre Pay option includes a text file with
    several rechargeable codes. Each code corresponds to a rechargeable value. Each code
    has 14 digits. Some codes corresponds on the 5$ rechargeable value, others to 10$ and so
    on.
•   Recharge Amount – the rechargeable value for a SIM card. A code is taken from the text
    file and it is used to recharge one SIM card. After a code is used it is deleted from the text
    file. You cannot use a rechargeable code for two different SIM cards or for the same SIM
    card for several times.
•   Recharge Limit – the smallest rechargeable value for a SIM card.
•   Low Credit Limit – the minimum value for the credit from a SIM card. When this value is
    achieved, the SIM card must be recharged.
•   Cost profile – option not used
•   Simulate Movement – this option allows you to choose if you want to simulate the
    movement of the SIM cards or not.
Warning!
        From the SIM Pool menu the following fields are required: Selection Algorithm 1, Max
Errors and Low Credit Limit!
        After you fill in the fields you want, you will press the “Add” button from the bottom of the
SIM Pool page to add the new created SIM Pool!

        After you accomplish the steps described before, you will select
a SIM Pool from the Filters list. For example test or test2. You can
create several SIM Pools depending on the number of used SIM cards,
the number of GSM gateways and SIM BOX equipments or the type of
the SIM cards.

        When you will select a SIM Pool, under the main SIM Pool menu, three new sections
will appear:
    Activity Period area
    SIM Pool statistic area - a statistic area of SIM cards included in the respective SIM Pool
    SIM cards status area - an area which shows details and status of the SIM cards from the
    SIM Pool.

A. Activity Period
        You will choose the time of day for the SIM cards included in a SIM Pool to be active.
This area has the all 24 time intervals on the upper part and the seven days of the week (from
Sunday to Saturday) in the left extremity of the window. Between these options there are several
checkboxes for every possible combination.




         Depending on the SIM cards features and calls cost you can choose the SIM Pool to be
active in the week-end, in the evening or after a specified hour. To check all the time periods just
click on the checkbox located in the top left corner of the window.
         After you selected the desirable time intervals and days you will press the Set button to
establish these options.


B. SIM Pool statistic area
The title of the area indicates the number of the SIM cards registered in the
running SIM Pool. We have in our example a four SIM cards pool and the
message is: “Found 4 records”.
There are several fields colored different for the SIM cards status:
    •   Out, Low credit, Blocked - yellow font on a red background
    •   Sleeping – black font on a gray background
    •   Error, SIM Malfunction, PIN Error, Offline - white font on a red
        background
    •   Waiting for Data, Waiting for PIN, Transferring SIM – black font
        on a white background
    •   Ready – white font on a green background
    •   Pending – yellow font on a green font
    •   Loading in GSM – orange font on a green background
    •   In Use, In Call – white font on a blue background

C. SIM cards status area
        The third new section of the SIM Pool menu shows the status of the SIM cards from the
running SIM Pool.
This section includes several lists and options describing the SIM cards.
• Display Filter – located on the upper part of the section. You can choose from: All OnLine,
    Out, Low Credit, Blocked, Sleeping, Error, SIM Malfunction, PIN Error, Offline, Waiting for
    Data, Waiting for PIN, Transferring SIM, Ready, Pending, Loading in GSM, In Use, In Call,
    Online, Sleeping or Allocated.
•   Sort Order – located next to the Display Filter. You can sort the SIM Pools depending on
    the: SIM, State (Ascending), State (Descending), Algorithm, GSM, Provider, Talk Time,
    Calls, Cost, Last Load, Last Unload or Errors.

         After you selected the desirable option you will press the “Go” button located on the right
part of the Sort Order list.




         Under these lists, on the left side of the section, we have a list with the SIM cards from
all the SIM BOX equipments from the SIM Server coverage area. In our case we have only one
SIM BOX with 512 SIM cards.
       For example, if we have the option: simbox_cp303-15-30-(Offline) it means that we
have the SIM card from the 30 position located on the 15th SIM2PCI board from the SIM BOX
equipment with the name simbox_cp303. The SIM card status is shown by the Offline option.
         From this list we can select as many SIM cards as we want, which will be detailed below.
We choose four SIM cards: number 06, 07, 09, 10 located on the first SIM2PCI board (labeled
00) from the SIM BOX equipment. We select them with the mouse and we press the “Add”
button located centrally under the SIM cards list.
        The four SIM cards selected are shown below with several details:
•   Status – which is Offline
•   Talk time – which is 00.00.00 – the format is hh-mm-ss
•   Cost – which is 0.00
•   Calls – 50 – the number of calls made by one SIM card
•   Loaded, Last Load and Last Unload.
        You can delete or edit any SIM card selected through the “Delete” or “Edit” buttons
located on the left bottom size of the section.

4.1.4 SIMs menu
         The SIMs menu shows several statistics about all SIM cards from all SIM BOX
equipments managed by the SIM Server. Two windows will appear: one for filtering and one with
details about the SIM cards.

A. Page & Filters Window

The first window includes:
   • Page - the number of the page (on the top).
   • Status – status of the SIM card. The options
         are: none selected, Online or Offline.
   • Not Used For - list which shows the time
         elapsed from the last usage of the SIM card.
         The options are 1 Month, 2 Weeks and 1
         Week.

        After you select the desirable option you will press the Filter button located on the left
bottom side of the window.

B. SIM status window
        The second window shows details about the SIM cards.




The parameters are:
•   ICC - the 20 characters code
•   IMSI - the 16 digits code
•   Provider – the name of the mobile provider such as: Orange, Vodafone, Cosmote.
•   Talk Time – the time of talk for a SIM card (in the hh:mm:ss format),
•   Calls - the number of calls for a SIM card
•   Conn – the number of connected (spoken) calls to a SIM card
•   Cost – the cost of a call,
•   Err - errors occurred in a call
•   Last Unload – the last unload of a SIM card - in the yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss format
•   Location – status which is Offline
•   Actions – includes the Details button which open another window called “SIM Details”.

          You can delete a SIM card from this list only by pressing the “Delete” button located on
the left bottom side of the second window.

C. SIM Details window
If you click on the Details button from the Actions menu, the
window called SIM Details will appear.
        On the upper part of the window, we have the ICC code,
the IMSI code, the provider, Location, Last Load (in yyyy-mm-
dd hh:mm:ss format), Last Unload (in yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss
format), Talk Time (hh:mm:ss), No. Loads (number of loads),
Errors, Credit, Cost, Calls, Conn met also in the window shown
before.
        You can reset some of these options by clicking on the
Reset button for the available options.
        The bottom part of the window includes several fields
where you can specify the PIN, PUK and IMEI codes, Phone No.
the telephone number. Also you have two checkboxes for Force
Block and Force Unload of the SIM card.
        After you made the changes press the Update button to
save the new settings for the SIM card.


D. Filters window
If you press the “View Log” button the “Filters”
window will appear.
         On this window you can select:
GSM Pool - select the GSM Pool you want to use -
created in the GSM Pools menu
SIM Pool – select the created SIM Pool you want to
use – created in the SIM Pools menu
Message Type – a list of messages where you can
select the one you want.
GSM Gw - you will select the name of the GSM
gateway (multiAccess) (for example gsmbox_andrei),
the number of the UABGSM card (from 00 to 15) and
the GSM module (00 or 01).
SIM Box – you will select the name of the SIM BOX
equipment, the number of the SIM2PCI board (from 00
to 15) and the number of the SIM card (from 0 to 31).
Time Span – is a filter option that shows the SIM cards
involved in conversation between two dates.
The option contains two fields for the start and end date
for the time period. The format is yy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.
       After you made the selections press the
Submit button located on the bottom left side of the
window.

          On the last row of the main window it will appear the SIM card selected for call with its
details like in the image below:

4.1.5 GSM Pools menu
In this menu you can create GSM pools for the
modules from the GSM Gateway (multiAccess).
The page includes 2 sections:
    Filters – includes only one item GSM Pool –
    select the pools of GSM modules created in
    this section.
    GSM Pool – the main section of this menu
    where you create the pools of GSM modules.
It has several options:
Name – the name of the new GSM pool (for
example gsmtest).
Description – here you can describe in few
words the GSM pool.
SIM Pool 1 to 3 – you can add up to 3 SIM Pools
to a GSM Pool
% to change – the percentage of SIM cards that
are simultaneous changing
Max Error - the maximum error number that
could appear on a GSM Pool.


After you select the options press the “Add” button to create a new GSM Pool.

4.1.6 Recharging menu
         In this section you can recharge the SIM cards with no credit or with a small credit value.
You will use a valid 14 digits rechargeable code from the text file which contains these codes.
         Initially you have a certain credit value for a SIM card. After you will use a rechargeable
code, the new credit value must be higher that the old SIM credit value. In this case the status of
the SIM card will be “Used” and the recharging is properly made.
         If the new credit value is not higher that the old value, the operation was not made
properly and the respective SIM card will have the status “Error”.
A. Import Prepay Recharge Codes
If you want to recharge a SIM card credit, you must press
the “Add codes” button located at the bottom of the
window. A new window labeled “Import Prepay Recharge
Codes” will appear. The option of this window are:
Operator Code - type the mobile operator code which is
different for each mobile operator.
Value – the value of the rechargeable code.
File – the text file where you will add a rechargeable code. You must click the “Browse” button
located in the right part of the window. Then you must select the text file which contains the
rechargeable codes. A code can be used only once. After it is used to recharge the credit of a
SIM card, the code is erased from the text file.

B. Status
In the upper part of the “Recharging window” it is a section named
“Status” where you can choose the status of the SIM cards used by the
SIM Server.
For instance if you choose the option “Used”, only the SIM cards with this
status will be displayed. If you choose the option “all”, then will be
displayed all the SIM cards no matter their status.
The options are: “all”, “Error”, “Not Used”, “Used” and “Unsure”.
        Under the “Status” area it is a section named “Pages” where you can choose the page
number you want.
C. Main section
      The main section of this menu contains several details about the SIM cards used by the
TOPEX SIM Server equipment.




        This section contains the following items: the SIM rechargeable code Id, the 14 digits
rechargeable Code, the Operator code, the Status of the SIM card, the Amount value of the
recharging, the SIM Box and the GSM Gateway used by the respective SIM card, an Error
Message that appears when an error occurs in the recharging operation.

4.1.7 Logs menu
       This menu includes two windows. The first one is the Filters window identical to the one
presented in the SIMs menu. It includes a list of possible messages - Message Type - where
you can select the message you want.
       In the second window of the Logs menu is presented the log in status for the SIM cards
and SIM BOX equipments like in the window below.




        In this window you will see for every item a message and the name of the SIM BOX
equipment. In addiction, for the SIM cards you will see also the ICC code. If you click on this
code, the SIM Details window will appear. The features of this window were shown in the SIMs
menu.

4.1.8 Statistics menu

         This menu includes a small window labeled “Available Reports”.
In this window we have 3 buttons: “Usage”, “ASR/ACD” and “Generate”
button.
         If you press the Generate button, a text file will be generated
containing reports about the SIM cards and the calls.


A. Usage Report Filter window
         It appears when you click on the “Usage” button from the “Available Reports” window.
It contains the following fields:
SIM Box - select the SIM BOX equipments
Card – select the SIM2PCI board you want.
         You can select all cards from all the SIM BOX
equipments in the area.
         After you made the selections press the “Generate”
button from the bottom of the window.
          At this moment it will be generate a text file in the txt format called stats_usage. This
text file includes a detail report about all the SIM cards selected from the specified SIM BOX
equipment.
          We have the number of the SIM card, the number of the SIM2PCI board, the name of
the SIM BOX equipment, the mobile provider, the IMSI code, the number of calls and the talk
time.
B. ASR / ACD Report Filter window
       It appears when you click on the “ASR / ACD” button from the “Available Reports”
window. It contains the following fields:
Start – the start date from which the report will start
End – the end date when the report is finished
         The format for Start and End are yyyy-mm-dd.In
the two blank fields located on the right of the window you
will enter the Start and End date for the report.

Group by – you can select depending on the Operator, SIM or Gateway.
        At the end press the “Generate” button located at the bottom of the window. A text file
will be also generated and it will contain the ASR (Answer Seizure Ratio - the number of
successful answered calls divided by the number of all the tries to call) and the ACD (Average
Call Duration) reports.

4.1.9 Users menu
        In this menu you can add, edit or delete the users for the TOPEX SIM Server equipment.




       The window that appears is called User Management and contains details (name,
company, e-mail, phone number) about the users already registered for the SIM Server
maintenance. The buttons of this window are detailed below:

Edit – located in the “Actions” section - you can edit the users
for the SIM Server. If you press the “Edit” button will appear a
window called “User data”, where you can modify the features of
the user.
        You can choose to change the username, the
password, the company, phone number, e-mail address, or the
privileges.
        A user could have one of the following privileges:
Administrator, Logging, Management or Configuration.
Delete - located in the “Actions” section - you can delete the
users for the SIM Server.
        As you can see in the image above, the TOPEX SIM
Server administrator can not be deleted. It can be only edited.
New User - add a user to the TOPEX SIM Server. The User Data
window will appear with all the fields empty. You will type the
features you want for the user.
Modify – press this button to establish the new settings for the
user.


4.1.10 Log out menu
       This option doesn’t contain any window and just by clicking on it you will exit from the
TOPEX SIM Server configuration menus. Now you are at the beginning of the administration
page where, in the “Authentication” window, you are asked about the user name and the
password.
       If you want to reenter in the TOPEX SIM Server administration page you just fill in the
user name and the password for the TOPEX SIM Server equipment.

Warning! Above, we detailed all the menus included in the TOPEX SIM Server administration
page except the “Cost Profiles” options. These options and also the Cost Profiles menu are not
used in this configuration!

4.1.11 Ethernet and serial connection
       The TOPEX SIM Server equipment can be accessed through an Ethernet connection
from a remote PC. The connection is made through SSH from Linux or using an application
which performs SSH under another operating system (for instance Putty).
        In Linux enter the following command to access the TOPEX SIM Server equipment:
                       ssh tpxadm@<IP address of TOPEX SIM Server>
        When you use Putty make the settings according to the Figure 8.

       In the Putty main window press check the SSH option, insert the IP address of TOPEX
SIM Server, insert the number of port “2212” and press the “Open” button in order to access the
TOPEX SIM Server. The authentication data required for the login are:
-   SSH port – 2212;
-   User name – “tpxadm”;
-   Password – “u53rp455”.
        The direct connection as root is not allowed. You must enter to the prompt the “su -”
command after you are logged in, and insert the “5y5t3mp455” password. The firewall is open
by default.
        For the serial connection use a serial cable which is inserted in the DB9 connector from
the back panel of the TOPEX SIM Server enclosure and in the serial connector from a PC.
        Use the HyperTerminal from Windows with parameters 115.200, 8, N, 1 in order to
establish a serial communication with the TOPEX SIM Server.

        4.2     Configuration of multiAccess equipment
        The GSM Gateway – TOPEX multiAccess is independent configured from the TOPEX
SIM Server equipment. Also the TOPEX SIM BOX equipment is independent configured from the
other two TOPEX equipments.
        You can configure the TOPEX SIM BOX and the TOPEX multiAccess equipments and
then the TOPEX SIM Server equipment but the order is random.

4.2.1 Accessing LINUX system console, verifying and modifying IP address of
   the multiAccess
       To access LINUX system console, you can use a serial connection (local) or a serial
emulator through the Ethernet connection.

A.    In case of using serial connection, plug the serial cable into the serial connector (COM2
      port) of the PG card.

   The manufacturer recommends you to turn off your computer before connecting the serial
cable to it. A proper functioning of TOPEX multiAccess requires this operation.




       You must use a serial communication program (terminal emulator). This may be
“HyperTerminal" under Microsoft Windows, Minicom from Linux, TERM95 under MS-DOS etc.




The communication parameters for the serial link are 19200, 8, N, 1:

       Once the connection to the multiAccess gateway is open, press ENTER. You should see
the window below that asks you for the login name and password. Enter name “root” and
password “91qwerty19”:




         If the connection was successful, the window below shows up. If you do not see the
"login" cursor, you must wait until it will show up again (usually the delay is of maximum 60
seconds) to repeat the login procedure.




        After connecting to the TOPEX gateway, you may use Linux commands for navigating
through the directory structure of the TOPEX system.

   B. In case of using an Ethernet connection, you can use a remote connection to the
TOPEX equipment. This is done by “ssh” from Linux or using a program that performs ssh under
another operating system (for instance Putty).
   [Secure Shell (SSH), also known as Secure Socket Shell, is a command interface and
protocol for getting secure access to a remote computer. To ensure this secure access ssh
commands are encrypted and secure in several ways: both ends of the client/server connection
are authenticated using a digital certificate, and passwords are protected by being encrypted.]
        In Linux, you enter the following command to connect to the multiAccess gateway:
                    ssh gsmgw@< IP address of TOPEX gateway>
        When using Putty the connection is done as shown in the window below:




Use these parameters when you achieve an Ethernet connection:
        - for SSH connection : the used port is 2222
        - for user name “gsmgw” : the password is “5tgb4rf”
        - for “root”: the password is “ 91qwerty19” available only for privileged users

Note: For security reasons, the direct login as „root” can be performed only from those terminals
that are included in the list of „secure” (trusted) terminals. From terminals that are not included in
this list log-in can be done only indirectly, by log-in as a non-privileged user and going into root
mode with the command su followed by the root password.
           In a Linux system, privileged user is the system or network administrator, who has
access permission above those of an ordinary, non-privileged user. Direct access to root is
available only for privileged users]
           Remember that the terminal on COM2 serial port is included in the list of trusted
terminals, while the pseudo-terminals used by ssh are not on this list.

         The network settings are located in two different files: one for the equipment settings and
one for the gateway settings. The IP Address and the Netmask of the multiAccess are in the
eth0 file.
         To see and to modify the IP address of the multiAccess, you must follow next steps:
         • change the directory typing "cd /etc/sysconfig/"




        •    to see or to modify the content of file named eth0, use vi editor, typing command vi
             eth0 like in the image bellow




        •    if you want to modify some information in this file, you must switch the editor in edit
             mode by typing the I key.
         The editor starts in its command mode. To enter the “edit mode” of the editor you must
press “i”. To return to “command mode” press “ESC” key.
         To delete an entire line go to “command mode” and press “dd” while the cursor is on
line you want to delete.
         To delete a single character goes to “command mode” and press “x” after having placed
the cursor on the character you want to delete. The first character at the right of the deleted
character will be moved over the cursor.
         To change the IP address of the TOPEX equipment and the network mask just type in
the command line:
                            <IP Address of the multiAccess> <Netmask>
        For example the following IP address and Netmask
                                     192.168.244.5 255.255.0.0

        Move the cursor at first character in the line. You type "i" to go to the "edit mode”. (You
may exit from this mode by pressing the "ESC" key). After that type "ENTER".
        If you want the multiAccess equipment to be configurable via Internet you must de-
comment (activate) the line shown below by removing the “#” character from the beginning of the
line. Remember to change the IP address to that of the gateway of your local network:
    # GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
        The de-commented line should look like it is shown below. Of course, your gateway
address could be different:
    GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
Note: It is highly recommend that you make a backup copy of this file to edit it safely. For
example you type at the command line: "cp eth0 eth0copy" or "cp eth0 eth01”.
        Be very careful when you make changes in the eth0 file. A single incorrect (misplaced)
character may cause the multiAccess system to stop working after restart. It is recommended
that you only change the numbers of the IP addresses and of the netmask.

        •     save the modifications using command wq!
        •     restart the TOPEX multiAccess equipment using command /sbin/reboot

4.2.2 Installing O.A.M. software on a PC
       The O.A.M. software is delivered by TOPEX on a CD, you must find this installation CD
when you unpack the multiAccess equipment.
       The procedure of O.A.M. program installation is described with details in the “O.A.M.
Manual” (see the “Package content”).

        4.3      Configuration of TOPEX SIM BOX
         To configure the equipment please see the Installation Manual of the SIM BOX shipped
in the TOPEX SIM Server package. The procedure of SIM BOX configuration is described with
details in the SIM BOX Installation Manual.

6       OPERATING CONDITIONS
        In order to assure proper operation of the TOPEX SIM Server equipment you must
regard the environment and security conditions.

        6.1      Environment conditions
        You must assure the appropriate environment conditions for the equipment. For that you
must:
    •   not use the equipment in flammable or explosive environments or in locations where toxic
        or flammable gases may be accumulated;
    •   not use it in an environment with high level of EMI (electromagnetic interference), near
        copiers, PC monitors, TV sets or other audio-video appliances or high power equipment
        such as electric motors or heaters;
    •   operating temperature range: from 5 to 50 0C;
    •   relative humidity: from 10 to 85 %, non-condensing.

        6.2      Security / proper operation conditions
        To assure the proper security conditions for the TOPEX SIM Server equipment, you
    must:
    •   find an adequate location (enough free space around the equipment for the proper
        ventilation);
    •   provide a reliable Internet connection;
    •   avoid dust and prolonged exposure to sun radiations;
    •   handle with care the equipment to avoid mechanical shocks;
    •   do not power supply the equipment from a supply voltage other than the voltage in the
        Technical Specifications table;
    •   assure that the wall outlet where you power supply the equipment operates properly and
        it has no defects.

7       GLOSSARY
ACD – Acronym for Average Call Duration - the average of duration for all the calls made by a
subscriber. It is expressed in minutes.
ASR – Acronym for Answer Seizure Ratio – It is calculated by taking the number of
successfully answered calls and dividing by the total number of calls attempted (seizures). Since
busy signals and other rejections by the called number count as call failures, the calculated ASR
value can vary depending on user behavior.
CAS – Acronym for Channel Associated Signaling - It is a form of digital communication
signaling. As with most telecommunication signaling methods, it uses routing information to
direct the payload of voice or data to its destination.
With CAS signaling, this routing information is encoded and transmitted along the same link as
the payload itself. This results in lower available bandwidth for the payload, normally reducing a
64 Kbit/s DS0 to 56 Kbit/s. Because of this, and the inherent security benefits of separating the
control lines from the payload, most current telecom systems rely more on the out-of-band
signaling.
CDMA – Acronym for Code Division Multiple Access - Advanced communications technology
that is a driving force behind 3G wireless networks around the globe. CDMA technology was
invented and is promoted by QUALCOMM. It employs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in
combination with spread spectrum technology. Audio input is first digitized into binary elements.
The frequency of the transmitted signal is then made to vary according to a defined pattern
(code), so it can be intercepted only by a receiver whose frequency response is programmed
with the same code, so it follows exactly along with the transmitter frequency. There are trillions
of possible frequency-sequencing codes, so CDMA communication is highly reliable, very
difficult to intercept or jam.
Because each carrier can be distinguished from the others by means of a specific modulation
code, this makes possible the reception of signals that were originally overlapping in frequency
and time. Thus, several transmissions can occur simultaneously within the same bandwidth, with
the mutual interference greatly reduced by the degree of orthogonality of the unique codes used
in each transmission. CDMA ensures excellent quality of voice signal, without noise or
interferences, high rate of data transmission and permits a uniform distribution of energy in the
emitted bandwidth. UMTS makes use of the W-CDMA technology, wideband CDMA.
DTMF – Acronym for Dual Tone Multiple Frequency - also known as "touch tone". Advanced
method for dialing a number, instead of the older Pulse mode. When you press a key on the
keypad a combination of two audio frequencies is sent on the line. DTMF capability is important
because it allows access to a wide range of interactive voice applications.
E1 - European format for digital transmissions, equivalent with North-American T1. E1 has a
data rate of 2,048 Mbps, containing 32 channels with 64 Kbps on each of them, and includes two
reserved channels for signaling and control. The North-American T1 standard has 24 channels
with 64 Kbps obtaining a data rate of 1,544 Mbps. The E1 and T1 line can be interconnected for
international use.
Ethernet - Standard for wired computer networks. Ethernet networks are connected by cables
and hubs, and move data around. For wired connections, TOPEX SIM Server provides Ethernet
one 10/100 port.
GSM – Acronym for Global System for Mobile Communication - is a digital mobile telephone
system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation of Time
Division Multiple Access (TDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a
channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. The frequency bands
used by the GSM mobile phones are: 400, 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. The most used are
GSM 900 and GSM 1800.

H 323 - An umbrella recommendation from the ITU-T that defines the protocols to provide audio-
visual communication sessions on any packet network. It is a part of the H.32x series of
protocols which also address communications over ISDN, PSTN or SS7. H.323 is commonly
used in Voice over IP (VoIP, Internet Telephony, or IP Telephony) and IP-based
videoconferencing.
H.323 was originally created to provide a mechanism for transporting multimedia applications
over LANs but it has rapidly evolved to address the growing needs of VoIP networks. One
strength of H.323 was the relatively early availability of a set of standards, not only defining the
basic call model, but in addition the supplementary services, needed to address business
communication expectations. H.323 was the first VoIP standard to adopt the IETF standard RTP
to transport audio and video over IP networks.
IMEI - Acronym for International Mobile Equipment Identifier. 15-digit number that uniquely
identifies an individual mobile terminal wireless device. The device may be a phone, a data
terminal, a modem module, etc. The IMEI code consists of TAC (Type Approval Code) that
describes the type of the mobile device, FAC (Final Assembly Code) related to final assembly,
SNR (Serial Number) which is unique, and a spare digit.
Note that while IMSI is subscriber-related, the IMEI is equipment-related. IMEI is world-wide
specific for a certain mobile terminal (phone or modem).
IMSI - Acronym for International Mobile Subscriber Identity. Unique code number (for all the
world) that identifies a mobile subscriber (its SIM card) to the network. 15 digit code, contains
information about the module code for the country, the network, identification number for the
mobile station (subscriber). Linked to the user account information at the network operator. IMSI
resides in the SIM card. While IMEI is related to the mobile phone GSM/UMTS module, the IMSI
code is related to the SIM.
IP - Acronym for Internet Protocol. It is the protocol from TCP/IP that directs the way data is
sent from one computer to another on the Internet. The messages are divided into data packets,
routed from the sender network to the receiver network and there re-assembled in the right order
to re-create the original message. Because a message is divided into a number of packets, each
packet can, if necessary, be sent by a different route across the Internet. These data packets
can arrive in a different order than the order they were sent in. The Internet Protocol just delivers
them. It's up to TCP protocol (Transmission Control Protocol) to put the packets back in the right
order.
IP Address - Short from Internet Protocol address. The numerical address of a network device
or resource as expressed in the format specified in the Internet Protocol (IP). In the current
addressing format, IP version 4, the IP address is a 32-bit (4 bytes) sequence divided into four
groups of decimal numbers separated by periods ("dots"). Each number can be zero to 255.
These four groups of numbers look like “127.0.0.1” or „213.154.120.170”. The four numbers in
an IP address are used in different ways to identify a particular network and a host on that
network.
ISDN – Acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network - Worldwide digital network providing
high-speed connection between the terminal devices (telephone, fax machines, computers)
for a wide range of telecommunication services, using the existing telephony infrastructure.
LAN – Acronym for Local Area Network - computer network that spans a relatively small area.
A group of computers, workstations and associated devices that share a common
communications line or wireless link and are located in a relatively limited area, typically inside
the same office building. The communications link that interconnects these computers allows any
device of the network to interact with any other from the same network. The devices that
compose a local network (workstations, personal computers and peripherals) are called nodes
and typically share the resources of a single processor or server. This server has resources
(applications, processing and data storage capabilities) that are shared in common by multiple
computer users. The LAN can be connected to other local networks over any distance via phone

lines, wireless links or other connections, and the system of LANs connected in this way is called
a wide-area network (WAN).
LCR – Acronym for Least Cost Routing - Refers to the method for delivering calls according to
the lowest cost carrier. Often more than one carrier can compete to deliver a call and depending
on their relative charges, the equipment will connect the call via the cheapest carrier. This
process means searching for the optimum traffic routes via one or several traffic routings
enabling a cost reduction.
PBX - Acronym for Private Branch eXchange. The PBX is a small, enterprise version of the
larger central switching office of the phone company. A PBX is a private telephone switch. It is
connected to groups of trunks (junctions) from one or more central offices and to all of the
telephones at the location (subscribers, local extensions) served by the PBX. Current exchanges
are in fact PABX, automated PBX, which don’t require a human operator to route the calls.
PCB – Acronym for Printed Circuit Board - Are used to mechanically support and electrically
connect electronic components using conductive pathways, or traces, etched from copper sheets
laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. Alternative names are printed wiring board or PWB
or etched wiring board. After populating the board with electronic components, a printed circuit
assembly (PCA) is formed. PCBs are rugged, inexpensive, and can be highly reliable. They
require much more layout effort and higher initial cost than either wire-wrapped or point-to-point
constructed circuits, but are much cheaper, faster, and consistent in high volume production.
PCM – Acronym for Pulse Code Modulation - is a digital scheme for transmitting analog data.
The signals in PCM are binary; that is, there are only two possible states, represented by logic 1
(high) and logic 0 (low). This is true no matter how complex the analog waveform happens to be.
Using PCM, it is possible to digitize all forms of analog data, including full-motion video, voices,
music, telemetry, and virtual reality (VR).
PIN – Acronym for Personal Identification Number - A secret shared between a user and a
system that can be used to authenticate the user to the system. Typically, the user is required to
provide a non-confidential user identifier or token (such as a banking card) and a confidential
PIN to gain access to the system.
PUK – Acronym for PIN Unlock Code - PUK is the code required to unlock a GSM SIM card that
has disabled itself after an incorrect PIN code was entered three times in a row. If an incorrect
PUK code is entered 5-10 times, the SIM card will permanently block (disable) it.
RUIM (or R-UIM) - Acronym for Re-Usable Identification Module, is a removable ID chip for
cellular phones made for the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network. The RUIM card
holds a user's personal information such as name and account number, cell phone number,
phone book, text messages and other settings. The RUIM card provides flexibility to switch
phones by simply removing the RUIM card and slipping it into another card-enabled phone.
RAID – Acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks - a category of disk drives that
employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives
are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers.
SIM – Acronym for Subscriber Identity Module - A subscriber identity module is a smart card
that securely stores the key identifying a mobile phone service subscriber, as well as
subscription information, preferences and text messages. The equivalent of a SIM in UMTS is a
Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM).
The SIM stores network state information such as its current location area identity (LAI). If the
handset is turned off and back on again it will take data off the SIM and search for the LAI it was
in. This saves time by avoiding having to search the whole list of frequencies that the telephone
normally would. Each SIM is uniquely identified by its ICCID [International Circuit Card ID].
SMS – Acronym for Short Message Service - Means the transmission of short text messages to
and from cellular phones. The messages must be text only (no images or graphics) and not
longer than 160 alpha-numeric characters. Operators of Mobile Phone Networks use a spare

data channel to send SMS messages. You may send SMS messages to another mobile
subscriber, the mobile operator can send you phone settings over-the-air or commercial
companies may send dedicated content to your mobile terminal.
SS7 – Acronym for Signal System 7 - is a global standard for telecommunications defined by
the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Sector
(ITU-T). The standard defines the procedures and protocol by which network elements in the
public switched telephone network (PSTN) exchange information over a digital signaling network
to effect wireless (cellular) and wire line call setup, routing and control. The ITU definition of SS7
allows for national variants such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Bell
Communications Research (Telcordia Technologies) standards used in North America and the
European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) standard used in Europe.
SSH – Acronym for Secure Shell or Secure Socket Shell - is a command interface and protocol
for getting secure access to a remote computer. To ensure this secure access ssh commands
are encrypted and secure in several ways: both ends of the client/server connection are
authenticated using a digital certificate, and passwords are protected by being encrypted.]
TCP/IP – Acronym for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol. It was established
by the Defense Department of the USA for communications between computers. It has been at
first incorporated in Unix operating system but has become the de facto standard for data
transmission via networks, including for Internet.
Currently TCP/IP is the basic communication language or protocol of the Internet, but it can also
be used as a communications protocol in private network. TCP/IP uses the client/server model of
communication in which a computer user (a client) requests and is provided a service (such as
sending a Web page) by another computer (a server) in the network. TCP/IP is a two-layer
program. The higher layer, Transmission Control Protocol, manages the assembling of a
message or file into smaller packets that are transmitted over the Internet and received by a TCP
layer that reassembles the packets into the original message. The lower layer, Internet Protocol,
handles the address part of each packet so that it gets to the right destination.
UMTS – Acronym for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System - represents an evolution
in terms of capacity, data speeds and new service capabilities from second generation mobile
networks. A key member of the global family of third generation (3G) mobile technologies
identified by the ITU, 3G/UMTS offers mobile operators significant capacity and broadband
capabilities to support greater numbers of voice and data customers - especially in urban centers
- plus higher data rates at lower incremental cost than 2G.
VoIP – Acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol. It realizes the voice calls routing over the
Internet or over any network based on the IP protocol, even in the local networks. Two principal
standards are available for the VoIP technology: SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and H.323.
VoIP achieves the voice signal conversion from a standard phone into a digital signal which is
sent over the Internet. If you call a standard telephone, the digital signal is reconverted at
reception into a voice signal. VoIP allows calls directly from a PC, from an IP phone or from a
standard phone using a special adapter.
WAN - Acronym for Wide Area Network. A system of LANs, connected together. A WAN is a
network that connects computers located in separate areas, (i.e., different buildings, cities,
countries). The Internet is a wide area network.
