CIRCUIT TRAINING SYLLABUS, FALL 2011

This course is a participation activity class, designed to introduce circuit training as a lifelong fitness
program, particularly for those new to this type of physical fitness activity. Students will learn
different machines and exercises for all the major muscle groups of the body, the benefits of resistance
training done in a circuit fashion, and the principle of muscular exhaustion for maximum fitness
benefits. In addition, students will be introduced to abdominal workouts and stretching for flexibility.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Learn a variety of exercises on MATRIX strength equipment, as well as free weights and cable
equipment that can develop different muscles of the body, incorporating all of the major muscles.
2. Learn the different types of fitness benefits from circuit training, such as muscular strength,
muscular endurance, and flexibility.
3. Learn how muscular exhaustion can develop muscular strength for maximum benefits.
4. Learn a variety of abdominal core strength exercises, as well as stretches for flexibility.
5. Improve his/her own personal physical fitness level by learning and utilizing the fitness principles
of strength training, in order to develop his/her own weight lifting program that can be used for life.
6. Gain an appreciation of the lifelong value and benefits of circuit weight training and overall
physical fitness, such as improved energy, esteem, and appearance.
1.Proper workout attire must be worn. NO tank-tops, sleeveless shirts, sport bras without shirts
overtop, jeans, or „street/school attire‟ will be allowed! Please be respectful and adhere to this policy.
2. Proper workout shoes must be worn, cross-trainers, running/jogging shoes. No street shoes, boots,
or sandals are allowed.
3. A TOWEL is REQUIRED for each student. No towel = No workout. If you do not have a towel,
you will be dismissed from class, and receive a no attendance for the day!
4. Each student may obtain a locker for day use only. You must supply your own lock.
5. NO IPODS or other electronic equipment during “instructional” segments of class.
EVALUATION AND GRADING POLICY:
1.) Participation: Total of 50% of your Grade
Non-Participation/Attendance of class sessions will affect your grade:
Missing (out of 33 for the semester) 0-2 (90-100%) = A; 3-4 (80-89%) = B; 5-6 (70-79%) = C/P;
7- 8 (60-69%) = D/NP; 9 or more (59% and below) = F.
Participation is based on your attendance and working out in all class sessions.
Students are expected to be on time and to participate fully in each class session.
Roll will be taken during the first 5 minutes of class.
If you come in after this time, you will be counted as ABSENCE. No exceptions.
THIS WILL GO INTO EFFECT BEGINNING THE 3RD WEEK OF CLASSES
Graded students and Pass/No Pass students are graded the same.
To receive a “Pass”, students must earn a “C” grade or better.
If you are sick or injured, DO NOT COME TO CLASS! Go get a Doctor’s note instead!!!
Excused Absences: Doctors‟ Medical note (for you, or your child if they live with you); Dentist‟s
Medical note; school event with proof; Military Duty with note; Jury Duty with note.
NO OTHER ABSENCES ARE EXCUSABLE.
2.) Written Examinations: Total of 25% of your Grade
a.) There will be a Witten Exam given at the 9th week of the semester.
above 90% = A; 80-89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60-69% = D; 59% and below = F
b.) There are NO MAKE UPS for this Exam. (unless absence is excused- see above)
c.) The Exam will include information from online handouts and material covered in class.
3.) Practical Examinations: Total of 25% of your Grade
PART ONE = 10% of Grade
a) Pre-Fitness Testing will be the 3rd week of class; Post-Fitness Testing will be the week prior to Finals week.
b) BOTH sets of tests are mandatory to receive this 10 % part of your grade.
c) You will also be required to turn in a COVER SHEET of your Pre and Post Fitness Test Scores at the
conclusion of the semester. Missing any portion of pre and post Fitness Tests, and/or not turning in your
Fitness Cover Sheet will = „F‟ Grade for this portion of the class.
* Fitness Testing includes: sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups or hanging, planks, and wall sits.
3.) Practical Examinations: Total of 25% of your Grade
PART TWO = 15% of Grade
a) Each student will be asked to teach (3) Machines, Cable, Dumbbell, or Barbell Exercises,
each worth 5 points, for a total 15 points.
b) 1 point = the proper Name of the exercise; 1 point = identifying primary Muscle(s) involved;
1 point = proper Demonstration of exercise; 1 point each for TWO proper Techniques of exercise .
c) The Practical Tests will take place for 3 to 4 weeks prior to Finals Week.
Approximately five students will be tested each class session during this time.

4.) Make-up Policy:
Students may “make up” a missed class by:
a.) watching the film “Food, Inc.” on their own, and writing a 1 page report.
b.) watching any video on http://www.exerciseismedicine.org/ and writing a 1 page report.
The FINAL for this class meets: Thursday, December 22, between 1:00pm – 3:45pm
