                                FUNDRAISING TIPS
Dear Dog Jog and 5K Run Participant,
Thank you so very much for taking the first step toward raising funds for orphaned animals by signing up to participate
in the Richmond SPCA’s Ninth Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run. If you’re signed up as a team captain, be sure to also
check out our Captain’s Kit, available online at www.richmondspca.org/race.
Proceeds from this event support the lifesaving programs and services of the Richmond SPCA, a non-profit organization
that is tackling the problem of pet overpopulation through education, adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter. The
organization saves the lives of 3,000 homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 cats and dogs daily.
The date of the Ninth Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run is Saturday, March 19, 2011. Events run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and
take place at the Richmond SPCA’s Robins-Starr Humane Center, located at 2519 Hermitage Road in Richmond,
Virginia. The day’s festivities kick off with a competitive 5K run at 9:30 a.m., and a pet-friendly 1-mile Dog Jog follows at
11 a.m. An awards ceremony, vendor fair and kids and pet activities are also featured.
In 2010, approximately 3,000 devoted animal lovers attended, and the event raised more than $120,000. Our goal for
2011 is $125,000. All activities, with the exception of the 5K run, are pet-friendly.
Fundraising by participants makes up an important part of this event’s success, and we’d be so pleased to have your
support, and the support of your friends and family.
How do you get started? The easiest way to let everyone know you’re participating is to log in to your personal
fundraising page at www.richmondspca.org/race. If you haven’t signed up to participate in the Dog Jog and 5K Run yet
you can do that there too. You may also register using a paper form, also available online and included with this
information packet.
If you have any questions about the event, or about fundraising, please feel free to give the Richmond SPCA’s
development department a call at 804-521-1318. Or, you may e-mail Jenni Booker, Manager of Community
Development at jbooker@richmondspca.org.

Many thanks!

Part I: Event Overview
Thank you for your interest in supporting our Ninth Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run. Proceeds from this event support the
lifesaving programs and services of the Richmond SPCA, a non-profit organization that is tackling the problem of pet
overpopulation through education, adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter. The organization saves the lives of 3,000
homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 cats and dogs daily.

Part II: How to Get Started
 Register. The easiest way to register for this event is online at www.richmondspca.org/race. You may also register
using a paper form, also available online and included with this information packet.
 Tell your story. Be sure to take a look at and personalize your fundraising web page (every individual participant
automatically gets one). Include personal photos and words that tell your story, and why the cause of helping
homeless animals is important to you.
 Get the word out. Use the e-mail and web tools available at www.richmondspca.org/race, or your own preferred
communication method, to ask friends and family to support your cause. Be sure to include a link to your fundraising
page on your Facebook and other social media pages, and in your e-mail signature.

Part III: How to Raise Donations
Important: Please try to collect complete names and addresses for everyone who donates to you, so that we
may send them a thank you letter that they may use for their tax deductions.

 Tell your story. Write a personal appeal to all of your friends and family telling them why you are participating in
this event and raising funds to help out homeless animals. Ask them to make a donation in your honor that will help
    animals in need.
 Compete! Is there more than one Dog Jog and 5K Run participant in your company, school or neighborhood?
Inspire everyone’s competitive spirit by setting up a challenge of some kind, or an incentive for the person with the
    highest fundraising total.
 Use available tools. Use the e-mail and web tools available at www.richmondspca.org/race, or your own preferred
communication method, to send weekly updates to your current and potential supporters to keep them up to date on
your progress and to share news.
 Snail mail. In addition to the cool online tools, try reaching out the old-fashioned way too. Write a note to your
neighbors letting them know you are participating in the Dog Jog and 5K Run. Provide them with a stamped
envelope with your address on it – it’s so easy, they’ll have to donate!
 Ask for support. Ask your employer to match what you raise! In addition, individual gifts made by your supporters
may be eligible for matching funds from their employers – please remind them to find out about their company’s
    matching gift policy.
 Use Social Media. Place regular updates about your progress on your Facebook or other social networking pages.
Encourage people to support orphaned animals by making a Dog Jog and 5K Run donation in your honor.
 Celebrate your birthday. Ask friends to make a donation to your fundraising page in lieu of presents.
 Offer your services. In exchange for a donation to your fundraising page, you could: babysit; drive a friend to the
airport; rake leaves, shovel snow or cut the grass.
 Throw a party. Get your family and friends in on it and divvy up the tasks. Ask your guests to support you by
making a donation. Or, If your company has a business professional dress code or your school has a uniform
policy, organize “Jeans Days” where employees or students can wear jeans for a $5 donation toward your
cause. Other easy, fun fundraising event ideas include: bake sale, yard sale, car wash, dog wash, or pennies for
pets fundraiser (collect and roll pennies and other loose change)!
 Persistence pays. If your first e-mail doesn’t get a response, try following up with a second e-mail, letter or phone
call a week or so later to remind your contacts that you’re still raising funds for a good cause. Most people
    appreciate the reminder.
