Important Note: If your chapter stays at a different hotel or you don’t book your room at the Town & Country, SkillsUSA CA incurs additional fees and costs for the State Conference resulting in increased student and chapter costs in the future. For Registration Inquires Contact Clay Mitchell (916) 445-5568 REGISTRATION INFORMATION 44th Annual State Leadership Conference and SkillsUSA California Championships PLEASE READ CAREFULLY O Only Gold Medal winners from regional competitions will be guaranteed a spot to compete at the state conference. Silver medal winners may register as alternates per the Advancement Policy. Please review the Advancement Policy in the Rules Governing the SkillsUSA California Leadership and Skills Championships on the SkillsUSA California web site. o Gold or Silver medal, winner’s names will be forwarded to the SkillsUSA California State Directors office by the Regional Coordinator on or before February 18, 2011. Each advisor needs to register their state competitors by logging on at www.skillsusa.org , go to Registration, Conference Registration, California Skills Leadership Conference, and enter your student names and information. Submit the proper conference fees to the SkillsUSA California Board Treasurer before the April 15, 2011 deadline in order for the medal winners to be registered and advance to State Conference. NOTE – you are also required to register your student observers and other participants from your chapter by following the above steps. o There will be a $50.00 service charge per check if a refund is requested. NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED AFTER April 15, 2011. o All registration materials and payments must be received by April 15, 2011. Late registrations and fees will not be accepted. o All registered students and advisors are required to have a completed and signed Form 1 on file with the SkillsUSA California Conference Office. Chaperones and school staff responsible for student oversight must have a completed and signed Form 2 on file with the SkillsUSA California Conference Office. (this form is on the www.skillsusaca.org website under Resources). o Qualified contestants are allowed to compete in one (1) skill, - or - one (1) leadership and one (1) skill - or – two (2) leadership contests. If there is a schedule conflict between contest times for a contestant, it is the contestant’s choice as to which contest they will compete in. What are the portfolio requirements? A. All portfolios must include a title page, table of contents, cover letter, resume, hand written job application, letter of recommendation, a work sample summary (write-up) and evidence to support the work sample summary. Refer to SkillsUSA California web site for more information. www.skillsusaca.org Q. Is Job Demo A and O a skill or leadership contest? A. Both Job Demo A and O are leadership contests. Q. How many contests can a member compete in at the State level? A. A member can compete in one (1) leadership and one (1) skill contest - or - two (2) leadership contests – or one (1) skill contest at state. Remember, if there is a schedule conflict between contest times for a contestant, it is the contestant’s choice as to which contest they will compete in. Schedule conflicts cannot be grieved. Q. Can I pay late? A. Beginning in 2011, all payments/fees must be received by the Treasurer by April 15, 2011. Late fees and registrations will not be accepted. Q. What form of payment is acceptable? A. Conference Registration - All payments must be made by check, payable to SkillsUSA California. PO’s will not be accepted. Hotel Registration – Make arrangements with Hotel at time of hotel reservation/registration. Q. Can I change someone on a team, i.e. Opening/Closing Ceremony? A. YES, as long as the substitute is a paid member that can be verified before the contest starts. The substitute must be registered for the conference. If a member has an unforeseen circumstance arise before the conference and cannot attend the conference, the advisor can make a substitution. Substitutions must be made at the time of on-site registration and will have no charge. No substitution will be allowed after on-site registration. Q. One of my members left our district and no longer attends our school; can I get a refund? A. Yes, up to April 15, 2011. Please note there will be a $50.00 service charge per check if a refund is requested. NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED AFTER April 15, 2011. Q. If a member wins a medal do they have to be present to receive it? A. YES. Winning a medal and receiving that medal is an important event in that young person’s life. Any member not present to receive their medal will forfeit that medal and all winners present will move up one spot. To be excused from the medal ceremony and still be eligible for a medal, written approval must be obtained and on file with the Skills USA CA State Director prior to the beginning of the awards ceremony. Q. Do I have to bring my chapter to the opening ceremony? A. YES. The Opening Ceremony is an important event in the member’s participation in SkillsUSA California. The meaning of SkillsUSA is given during the emblem ceremony. Also, important last minute information and the SkillsUSA Knowledge Exams are given in conjunction with the opening ceremony. Q. My contestant arrived late at the contest; can they get extra time? A. No extra time will be given. SkillsUSA teaches members to be responsible and the value of being on time. Q. What do I get for my $160.00 conference participant registration fee? A. Registered conference participants will receive the following: Conference materials, one (1) state pin, one (1) conference t-shirt; Thursday – dinner; Friday – lunch (noon), and formal banquet Friday night; Saturday – box lunch (noon), and entertainment and snack Saturday night. Q. Does the contestant need to bring their Portfolio to the state contest? A. YES. Students are required to bring a copy of their portfolio for each contest that they participate in (take the portfolio to the contest, as it will be scored and evaluated by the specific contest judging panel). Additionally, job interview contestants should bring THREE copies of their portfolio so each person on the interview panel has a copy during the interview. Q.
