http://www.willoughbybaltic.comWhat Is the Green Streets Initiative?

Begun as the Cambridge Green Streets Initiative, we were founded as a
grassroots organization comprised of people who commute through, live,
work, study, or send children to school in Cambridge. We have since
grown to formally include other cities, including Somerville and Medford, as
well as organizations from many other neighboring and distant cities and
towns.

For environmental, health, safety, and community building reasons, we
created Walk/Ride Days which occur on the last Friday of each month.
On those days, we encourage people throughout the city to wear
something green and to use green means of transportation. The idea

                               Green Streets Initiative

is to create a city-wide party on that day, with each institution celebrating -
and encouraging - in its own way.

Walk/Ride Days began in Spring 2006 in public and private schools
throughout Cambridge. The response was terrific. Since then, we have
expanded to include over 100 coordinators in businesses and institutions
across the city, from Genzyme to Toscanini's. We've had excellent support
from city, press, the academic community, and state government. We've
received numerous forms of recognition, including Cambridge's Golden
Shoe Award and its 2007 GoGreen Business Award.

Part of Green Streets' success has been in being a small, but repeating,
commitment. Even if people don't participate the first month, they become
aware, and often do join in the next month, if not also during the month.

It has been most impressive to see the changes that have resulted in
people’s habits by publicizing this event and offering small incentives and
recognition. Those who regularly "go green" feel appreciated as well as
those who try it out. The sense of community it engenders is wonderful.
