What is the Summer Youth Employment, Camps, and Activities Guide?

This Guide is a directory of summer employment, camps, and activities written especially for
the young people in Nashville and surrounding areas. It was developed with the assistance of
youth, The 411, members of the Nashville Community Coalition for Youth Safety (NCCYS),
and summer camps announcements that were published at various local new and media outlets.
This directory focuses on critical issues & offers accessible information and contact numbers to
develop your awareness of summer programs throughout the Nashville/Davidson County area.

The inclusion of agencies in this directory does not constitute endorsement nor does omission
constitute disapproval by the committee. For more information about this guide, please contact
Vicente Samaniego via email at vsamaniego@mmc.edu or phone at 615-327-5997.

Preston Taylor Ministries- is an afterschool and mentoring program serving children in grades pre-
Kindergarten through 12th grade who live in the Preston Taylor community. In order to combat the
obstacles that a child faces in this community, PTM seeks to surround children with concerned,
supportive adults who will encourage them to grow in God's grace, while providing them with reading
skills that will allow them to achieve in school. Because of the number of children in this community
and the vastness of the needs, we need enthusiastic volunteers to surround the children of this
community with the support they need.

Book’Em / RIF, a local children's literacy nonprofit, needs volunteers for two reading
programs. Reading Is Fundamental program volunteers read to elementary school children on a
monthly basis and commit to at least 2 hours per month. Volunteers will read to classes of area
school-age children in Title 1 schools and distribute new books to them during the year.

Ready for Reading volunteers read to pre-school children on a weekly basis. This volunteer
opportunity allows volunteers to bond with young children while helping them learn to love
books and reading. Volunteers read one-to-one or with small groups of children in area pre-
schools that serve lower income children. Time commitment is one hour per week.
